Chinese customs cited contamination in soybean shipments and quarantine pests in logs; Reuters reported the moves amid China’s retaliation for new U.S. tariffs. The soybean licenses were reinstated on November 7, 2025, but the available sources do not confirm whether the log suspension was later lifted.
What China suspended on March 4, 2025
China’s General Administration of Customs announced two distinct measures, both effective upon publication on March 4. The soybean action applied to three named companies’ export qualifications, while the log action suspended imports from the United States more broadly.
| Measure | Scope | Chinese customs’ stated basis | Later status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soybean qualifications | CHS Inc.; Louis Dreyfus Company Grains Merchandising LLC; and EGT, LLC | Ergot and seed coating agent detected in imported U.S. soybeans, according to Chinese customs | China reinstated the three companies’ licenses on November 7, 2025, according to AMIS. |
| U.S. log imports | U.S. logs generally | Quarantine pests found in U.S. log shipments, according to Chinese customs | The sources cited here do not establish whether the suspension was later lifted. |
The stated contamination and pest findings are China’s official explanations; they should not be treated as independently verified U.S. findings. The log measure concerned logs, not necessarily every category of processed lumber.
How the measures fit into the tariff dispute
Reuters described the March 4 actions as an escalation in China’s retaliation after the United States imposed an additional tariff on Chinese goods. The measures came shortly after President Donald Trump’s March 1 direction to investigate tariffs on imported lumber. An investigation is not the same as a tariff already being in effect.

China also announced tariffs on U.S. agricultural and food imports. Reuters reported that the announced rates were scheduled to take effect March 10, 2025:
- A 15% tariff on chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton.
- An additional 10% tariff on soybeans, sorghum, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy imports.
These are the rates and effective date reported for the 2025 announcement, not confirmation of current tariff rates. The tariffs were separate from the company-specific soybean qualification suspensions and the country-wide log import suspension.

Why the trade stakes were significant
Reuters, citing the U.S. Census Bureau, reported nearly $12.8 billion in U.S. soybean trade with China in 2024 and said about half of U.S. soybean exports went to China. That is a measure of trade in 2024, not an estimate of losses caused by the March 2025 actions.
Reuters, citing Chinese customs data, reported that China imported around $850 million in U.S. lumber products in 2024 and was the third-largest destination for U.S. lumber. This figure likewise describes trade in 2024, not the value of trade lost because of the log suspension. The report’s lumber figure covers lumber products, while the customs suspension described in the notices targeted logs.

What is known about the outcome
AMIS’s December 2025 monitor reported that China reinstated the three soybean companies’ import licenses on November 7, 2025, allowing shipments to resume. That update addresses the soybean licenses, not the separate suspension of U.S. log imports. The sources available here do not establish the log measure’s later status, so it should not be described as either still in force or rescinded.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
