Shanghai’s municipal government described it as the world’s largest dual-fuel-powered container ship—a category-specific claim, not proof that it is the largest container ship of any kind.
What ship did China deliver?
Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding built the CMA CGM Seine, the first of four vessels in a series tailored for CMA CGM. The ship was named and handed over in Shanghai on April 15, 2025, according to the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.
The delivery report said the vessel was scheduled to begin operating on the Far East–Europe route on April 18, 2025. That was a planned deployment announced at delivery; it does not independently establish the ship’s subsequent or current service.
How large is the CMA CGM Seine?
The Shanghai government reported a nominal capacity of 24,000 TEUs, a length of 399 meters, a width of 61.3 meters, and carrying capacity of 220,000 tons.

A TEU is a twenty-foot equivalent unit, the standard measure of container-ship capacity. It is not the same as a count of individual containers, since containers can be different lengths. When the ship was launched on November 20, 2024, a government report said it could carry up to 23,872 containers, including 2,200 standard refrigerated containers. The later delivery report gave its nominal capacity as 24,000 TEUs; the two figures describe different measures.
What does “world’s largest” mean here?
The record claim is specifically about dual-fuel-powered container ships. The delivery coverage does not establish that the CMA CGM Seine is the largest container ship across all propulsion types or according to every possible size measure.

That distinction matters when comparing ships. A January 2024 report from China’s State Council, citing Xinhua, said OOCL Valencia had a capacity of 24,188 TEUs as it began sea trials and called it “among the world’s largest.” The report concerns a sea trial, not delivery, and does not provide a comprehensive ranking. A meaningful comparison needs a consistent date and measure—such as nominal TEU capacity—while keeping container count, dimensions, carrying capacity, and propulsion category separate.
How does its dual-fuel system work, and what emissions reductions were reported?
The Shanghai government said the ship has an 18,600-cubic-meter LNG tank and can travel a reported 20,000 nautical miles (37,040 kilometers) on a single trip. The term “dual-fuel” indicates that it is designed to operate using two fuel types; the delivery report identifies LNG storage but does not detail the operating arrangements for each fuel.

The same report compared the ship with conventional vessels and gave reductions of 99% for sulfur and fine particles, 85% for nitrogen oxides, and about 20% for carbon dioxide. These are source-reported comparisons, not independently verified figures here: the report does not specify the measurement protocol or the lifecycle boundary used for the comparison.

A December 2025 Shanghai government report said CMA CGM Vendome was the third 24,000-TEU ship of its kind delivered by Hudong-Zhonghua to the carrier. The report does not change the specific 2025 claim about the CMA CGM Seine; it describes the broader delivery program.
