The reported mix is five Airbus A350-1000s, five Boeing 777-9s, four Boeing 777-8F freighters and two Boeing 777F freighters. The approval is not proof that all 18 aircraft were already covered by signed purchase contracts: the November 2025 report said purchases remained subject to contract negotiations.
Which aircraft are in the reported plan?
AeroTime reported on November 26, 2025 that China Airlines’ plan covered up to 18 aircraft. Its US$7.852 billion figure is a reported maximum package value, not a final negotiated price or confirmation of the amount paid.
| Aircraft | Reported quantity | Mission |
|---|---|---|
| Airbus A350-1000 | 5 | Passenger |
| Boeing 777-9 | 5 | Passenger |
| Boeing 777-8F | 4 | Freighter |
| Boeing 777F | 2 | Freighter |
AeroTime’s November 26, 2025 report described the purchases as subject to contract negotiations. It did not specify an engine choice or delivery dates for the reported plan.
Does approval mean China Airlines has signed for all 18?
No. The report describes a board-approved plan, while also saying that purchases remained subject to negotiations. Separate announcements confirm firm orders and option conversions involving some of the same aircraft types, but the available announcements do not reconcile every aircraft in the reported 18-aircraft plan to a signed contract. In particular, they do not explain the status of its two Boeing 777Fs.

The distinction matters: an approved procurement plan sets out an intended purchase and spending ceiling; it is not, by itself, evidence that every aircraft has a completed contract or that the ceiling will be paid.
How does the plan relate to earlier firm orders?
The aircraft types overlap with transactions announced separately in 2025. These announcements should not be treated as evidence that an entirely new 18-aircraft purchase was signed in November.

| Date and source | What was announced | Status and timing stated |
|---|---|---|
| May 8, 2025, China Airlines | 10 Boeing 777-9s and 4 Boeing 777-8F freighters, with an option for 9 more aircraft | The airline said deliveries were expected to begin in 2030. This schedule applies to that separately announced Boeing order. |
| March 31, 2025, Airbus | 10 Airbus A350-1000s | Airbus said China Airlines had signed a firm order, finalizing a commitment announced in December 2024. |
| 2025, China Airlines sustainability page | 5 A350-1000s, 5 777-9s and 4 777-8Fs | The airline describes these aircraft as option conversions into firm orders. |
China Airlines’ fleet information describes the option conversions. Airbus’s March 31, 2025 announcement covers the ten-aircraft firm A350-1000 order. China Airlines’s May 8, 2025 Boeing announcement covers the separate Boeing order and its expected delivery start.
What roles are the aircraft intended to serve?
Passenger aircraft
China Airlines said its 777-9s are intended for long-haul routes to North America and Europe. Airbus said the A350-1000s would also serve long-haul North American and European routes and share operational commonality with China Airlines’ existing A350-900 fleet.

Airbus describes the A350’s range capability as up to 9,700 nautical miles (18,000 kilometres) and says it uses 25% less fuel, with a similar reduction in carbon emissions, compared with previous-generation aircraft types. These are Airbus’s manufacturer claims, not China Airlines-specific operating results or measured savings on its routes.
Freighters
China Airlines says the 777-8F would complement its existing 777F freighters, support cargo-network expansion, and improve range and payload. Those are the airline’s stated intended benefits; they do not establish the operating performance of aircraft not yet delivered.

What is known about price and delivery timing?
The reported US$7.852 billion is a ceiling for the package as described by AeroTime, citing the airline’s filing. It is not a final contract value or evidence of a payment. The November report did not provide delivery dates for all 18 aircraft. China Airlines’ expectation that deliveries would begin in 2030 was stated for its separate May 2025 order of ten 777-9s and four 777-8F freighters, so it should not automatically be applied to every aircraft in the later reported plan.
China Airlines is not Air China
This report concerns China Airlines, the Taiwan-based airline. It is a different company from Air China; purchases announced by Air China or other mainland Chinese carriers are not part of the plan described here.
