The June 2024 cyberattack on CDK Global disrupted the software that thousands of U.S. car dealerships use to sell vehicles, schedule repairs, manage inventory, process financing, collect payments and maintain accounting records. Most affected dealerships did not close, but many had to replace normal digital workflows with paper forms, spreadsheets and manual approvals.
CDK described the event as a “ransom event.” Cybersecurity analysts reportedly linked it to the BlackSuit ransomware operation, although CDK did not publicly confirm the group responsible. Reports also indicated that a ransom payment may have been made, but CDK did not confirm that payment.
What happened to CDK Global?
CDK Global disclosed a cyber incident on June 19, 2024, and temporarily shut down its systems. The company told customers that a second cyber incident occurred late that day, leading it to shut down most systems again as a precaution.
CDK provides dealer-management software used by approximately 15,000 dealerships in North America. Its platform connects many functions that customers usually never see directly:

Because these functions are connected, an outage affected much more than a dealership’s ability to print a sales contract. A store could remain open while still being unable to complete a transaction, release a vehicle, obtain financing approval, close a repair order or reconcile its books normally.
How dealerships were affected
The disruption was not identical at every store. It depended on whether the dealership used CDK for a particular function, whether it had backup systems and how quickly it could create manual procedures.
| Dealership function | Possible effect of the outage |
|---|---|
| Vehicle sales | Paper deal jackets, slower approvals, delayed contracts and difficulty completing delivery paperwork |
| Financing | Manual coordination with lenders and delays in funding or finalizing deals |
| Service | Paper repair orders, slower check-in and check-out, and difficulty reviewing service history |
| Parts and inventory | Harder-to-access stock records and slower parts ordering or vehicle-location checks |
| Payments | Alternative payment procedures and delayed posting or reconciliation |
| Accounting and payroll | Manual data entry, delayed reporting and extra work to reconstruct transactions |
Large dealership groups including AutoNation and Asbury Automotive Group disclosed operational effects. AutoNation said its locations remained open, illustrating the distinction between a dealership being open to customers and its normal systems being fully operational.
Did all 15,000 dealerships shut down?
No. The often-repeated figure refers broadly to CDK’s dealership customer base, not to every U.S. dealership and not to stores that all closed at the same time.
Many affected stores continued selling cars and repairing vehicles through offline procedures. That could mean writing information on paper, using spreadsheets, calling lenders or other vendors directly, and entering transactions into CDK after access returned. These workarounds kept businesses operating but reduced productivity and increased the risk of delayed or duplicated paperwork.

Was the CDK attack ransomware?
CDK used the phrase “ransom event” when describing the incident. Analysts and news reports attributed the attack to, or linked it with, the BlackSuit ransomware operation. That attribution was not publicly confirmed by CDK, so it is more accurate to say the attack was reportedly linked to BlackSuit rather than state that BlackSuit definitively carried it out.
Reports later said that approximately 387 bitcoin—worth about $25 million at the time—was sent on June 21, 2024 to a wallet associated with BlackSuit affiliates. CDK did not publicly confirm that it paid the ransom. The reported payment should therefore be treated as an allegation based on blockchain and media analysis, not as an established company disclosure.
When did CDK systems come back?
Restoration occurred in stages rather than on one universal date. CDK told customers it expected all dealers to be back on its dealer-management system by late July 3 or early July 4, 2024. Some large dealership groups reported that core access returned around the end of June, while integrations and ancillary functions took longer.
Recommended Free Tools
AutoNation later reported that its core functions were restored by June 29, ancillary systems were restored by the end of July, and residual effects continued through the end of the third quarter. That timeline shows why a dealership might say its main system was “back” while still experiencing delays in connected applications or cleanup work.
What did the outage mean for car buyers?
Consumers could encounter several practical problems:

- A vehicle purchase taking longer than expected to document or deliver
- Delays in lender funding, registration or title-related processing
- Difficulty obtaining an accurate payoff, trade-in record or vehicle history from the dealership’s normal system
- Longer service appointments and slower repair-order completion
- Requests to repeat information that had originally been entered into an unavailable system
- Delayed receipts, invoices or payment posting
A customer who was asked to use a manual process should protect themselves by keeping copies of every signed document, payment confirmation, repair estimate and email. If a dealership says a transaction will be entered later, ask who will confirm that it was posted and when you should expect the final paperwork.
Was customer data stolen?
Early in the incident, it was not clear whether customer information had been taken. CDK later told customers that it had not determined that personally identifying information was impacted, while its investigation was still ongoing as of July 30, 2024. That wording did not establish that no data had been accessed or copied.
Later state breach records documented notices involving affected individuals. Maine’s record listed 36 affected people nationally, including one Maine resident, with consumer notification dated September 20, 2024. Massachusetts’ 2024 breach report listed one affected Massachusetts resident and identified Social Security numbers among the reported data categories.
Those notices do not show that customer databases at all 15,000 dealerships were compromised. They do show why “no customer data was breached” is too broad a conclusion.
What should affected customers do?
- Save transaction records. Keep contracts, financing documents, payment receipts, repair orders, estimates and registration paperwork in one folder.
- Check account activity. Review bank, credit-card and lender accounts for unfamiliar charges or changes, especially if you gave information to a dealership during the affected period.
- Read breach notices carefully. If CDK, a dealership or a state notice contacts you, check which information was involved and whether monitoring or identity-theft assistance is offered.
- Consider a credit freeze. A freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion is free and prevents new creditors from accessing your credit file until you lift it. A fraud alert is another option, but it does not block access in the same way.
- Verify unusual requests. Call the dealership using a phone number from its official website before sending a Social Security number, bank details, wire transfer or additional payment.
- Follow up on unfinished paperwork. Confirm that the title, registration, financing, refund or repair warranty record was completed after systems were restored.
How costly was the attack?
There is no single publicly established industry-wide loss figure. Dealerships faced lost productivity, delayed transactions, manual labor and possible lost sales, but the cost varied by company and by how dependent each store was on CDK.

AutoNation estimated that the incident reduced its 2024 earnings per share by approximately $1.75, including lost income and one-time compensation costs. It separately estimated a residual third-quarter impact of $0.21 per share. Those figures apply to AutoNation and should not be presented as the loss for the entire dealership industry.

What happened to BlackSuit afterward?
In July 2025, U.S. and international authorities announced the seizure of BlackSuit-related servers and domains and the seizure of approximately $1.09 million in cryptocurrency. The Justice Department described the broader disruption of the ransomware operation but did not officially identify CDK as the victim connected to that seizure.
What the CDK incident shows about business risk
The outage demonstrated the financial exposure created when a critical business depends on one software provider. A dealership may have physical inventory, employees and open doors, yet still be unable to complete ordinary work when its central system is unavailable.
For dealerships, sensible safeguards include tested paper procedures, offline access to essential customer and vehicle records, alternate payment and communication channels, segmented networks, multifactor authentication and a plan for restoring data after an attack. For customers, the practical lesson is simpler: keep your own copies of important financial and vehicle documents rather than assuming the dealership can retrieve everything instantly.
FAQ
How many dealerships were affected by the CDK Global cyberattack?
CDK’s software was used by approximately 15,000 dealerships in North America. That figure describes CDK’s customer footprint; it does not mean every dealership in the United States was affected or that all affected stores closed.

Did CDK Global pay a $25 million ransom?
News reports said approximately 387 bitcoin, then worth about $25 million, was sent to a wallet associated with BlackSuit affiliates. CDK did not publicly confirm the payment, so it should be described as reported rather than proven.
Was personal information stolen in the CDK attack?
The full scope was not initially established. CDK said it had not determined that customer personally identifying information was impacted during its investigation, but later state breach records documented notices involving affected individuals. There is no basis for saying that all dealership customer data was stolen—or that no data was affected.
What should I do if I bought a car or used a dealership service department during the outage?
Keep copies of contracts, receipts, repair orders and payment confirmations; review your financial and credit accounts; respond carefully to any official breach notice; and contact the dealership to confirm that registration, financing, refunds and repair records were entered correctly after systems were restored.
The Bottom Line
The CDK Global attack was a major technology outage for dealerships that relied on its dealer-management software, but it was not a shutdown of every U.S. dealership. Stores generally stayed open through manual workarounds, while sales, service, financing, payments and accounting moved more slowly. CDK’s public statements did not establish that customer information was untouched, and later state notices showed that at least some individuals received breach notifications. Consumers should retain their own records, monitor accounts and treat any follow-up data-security notice seriously.
