The joke used to be that a Waymo ride cost dramatically more than an Uber because you were paying for a fleet of expensive autonomous cars. That was once broadly true in San Francisco—but the gap has narrowed.
In the latest broad comparison available, Waymo averaged $19.69 per ride versus $17.47 for Uber. That made Waymo about 12.7% more expensive, not 30% or 40% more. The difference can still become much larger on short trips, during rush hour, or when a nearby Waymo is scarce.
How much more does Waymo cost than Uber?
The best like-for-like published comparisons come from Obi, which compares quoted fares for the same searches rather than relying on advertised starting prices. The results show that Waymo has generally been more expensive than UberX, but that the premium has fallen substantially.
| Comparison period | Waymo average | Uber average | Waymo premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 25–April 25, 2025 | $20.43 | $15.58 | About 31% |
| November 27, 2025–January 1, 2026 | $19.69 | $17.47 | About 12.7% |
The newer figures come from more than 94,000 simulated Bay Area ride requests. They are useful evidence, but they are not a national price list. The comparison covered the San Francisco Bay Area, and your own quote can vary by neighborhood, route, time, demand and vehicle availability.
#1 Best Overall
The driverless ride is not automatically the cheaper ride
It is tempting to assume that removing the driver should slash the fare. The consumer-price data does not show that yet. In the earlier Obi sample, Waymo’s average fare was $4.85 higher than Lyft and $5.99 higher than Uber.
That premium reflects more than the absence of a human behind the wheel. Waymo operates a specialized fleet, and its fare can include the economics of vehicle availability, autonomous-system operations, remote support, maintenance and other costs. The fare comparisons do not reveal what it costs Waymo to provide a ride. They only show what riders were quoted.
Nor does “autonomous” mean that nobody supports the service. The vehicle drives itself during the trip, but Waymo still has operational, cleaning, maintenance and customer-support personnel.
Short Waymo trips can be especially expensive
Fixed charges and minimum fares matter more when a trip covers only a short distance. In Obi’s April 2025 data, trips of just 0.1 to 1.4 kilometers averaged:

|---|---|
| Waymo | $26.46 |
| Uber | $19.31 |
| Lyft | $18.93 |
That is the kind of trip that can produce the “you have got to be kidding” reaction. A $7 difference on a short ride is large in percentage terms, even if the dollar difference is less dramatic on a longer journey.
Rank #2
For personal-finance purposes, compare the total quoted fare—not just the per-mile figure. A minimum price, pickup economics and local fees can dominate a short trip.
Rush hour can widen the gap
Waymo, Uber and Lyft all charged more around morning and evening commuting periods in the April 2025 sample. Waymo’s increases were more pronounced. Around the 5–6 p.m. period, the Waymo–Uber difference approached $9.50.
That does not mean every evening Waymo ride will be $9.50 more. It means the difference was large in that particular San Francisco dataset. Demand and vehicle availability near both the pickup and drop-off locations can affect the quote.

If your schedule is flexible, checking prices 10 or 15 minutes later—or comparing before booking—can matter more than debating the average. A fare that looks reasonable at 2 p.m. may be a poor deal during the commute home.
How to check the real Waymo price before booking
Waymo does not publish one universal nationwide fare. The app gives the relevant quote for your specific trip.
- Open the Waymo app.
- Tap Search for destination.
- Enter your destination.
- On the Your trip screen, check the estimated fare at the bottom.
- Tap Next to review the trip details.
- Tap Request car only after checking the price and route.
Waymo says its price is affected by a minimum fare, distance, duration, demand, vehicle availability, tolls, airport fees, promotions and certain changes or cancellations. It also says the quoted trip uses the most direct route; an unexpected reroute does not change the quoted cost for that trip.
Do tips make Uber more expensive?
Waymo rides do not require tipping. That makes the out-of-pocket comparison more complicated than simply placing two displayed fares next to each other.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you normally tip an Uber driver, your final Uber cost may be closer to the Waymo price—or occasionally higher. For example, a 15% tip on a $17.47 Uber fare would add about $2.62, bringing the total to roughly $20.09. That would be slightly above the $19.69 Waymo average from the later Bay Area comparison.
But that is an illustration, not proof that Waymo is cheaper after tipping. The Obi comparisons used quoted ride prices and did not establish that every Uber rider paid a particular tip percentage. The fair conclusion is that Waymo’s quoted fare averaged higher, while the final difference depends on whether you tip and how much.
Waymo may appear inside Uber
In Austin and Atlanta, Waymo rides are offered through the Uber app. An eligible Uber request can result in a Waymo vehicle if one is available nearby and the trip falls within the service area.
In the Uber app, the preference path is Account → Settings → Autonomous vehicles → toggle on Waymo. Eligible options listed by Waymo include UberX, Uber Green in Austin, Uber Comfort and Uber Comfort Electric. A Waymo match is not guaranteed. Uber will prompt you to accept the autonomous ride, and you can switch to a conventional ride instead.

The autonomous ride itself does not require a tip. Also note that older articles may say Waymo is available through Uber in Phoenix. Waymo and Uber ended that Phoenix deployment in June 2026; the partnership continued in Austin and Atlanta according to the available reporting.

For a budget-conscious rider, the practical rule is simple: check the live prices each time. Do not assume “no driver” means “cheaper,” and do not assume Waymo is always dramatically more expensive.
- Compare the total fare before booking. Averages cannot account for your exact route or current demand.
- Be particularly cautious with short trips. Minimum-price effects can make Waymo poor value for a quick hop.
- Check during peak periods. The premium may widen when demand rises.
- Include your normal Uber tip. Compare your expected final cost, while recognizing that tips are optional and vary by rider.
- Use promotions carefully. A temporary discount can reverse the normal price relationship.
The headline is therefore less amusing—and more useful—than the old claim that Waymos cost 30% or 40% more. Waymo’s driverless rides still averaged more than comparable UberX rides in the latest broad published comparison, but only by about 13%. The premium is real, uneven and highly dependent on the trip.

Is Waymo more expensive than Uber?
On average, yes, in the published San Francisco Bay Area comparisons. Waymo averaged $19.69 versus $17.47 for Uber in the later sample, a difference of about 12.7%. Your own fare can be cheaper or more expensive depending on demand, route and availability.
Why can short Waymo rides cost so much?
Minimum fares and fixed pickup costs are spread over fewer miles on short trips. In one Obi sample, trips of 0.1 to 1.4 kilometers averaged $26.46 for Waymo versus $19.31 for Uber.
Do you tip a Waymo?
No. Fully autonomous Waymo rides do not require tipping. That can narrow the real out-of-pocket gap compared with an Uber ride if you normally tip your driver, but it does not make Waymo universally cheaper.
Can an Uber ride be a Waymo?
Yes, in Austin and Atlanta, eligible Uber requests can be matched with a Waymo vehicle when one is available. You must accept the Waymo option, and you can switch to a conventional ride instead.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Waymo rides have generally cost more than comparable UberX rides, but the premium has narrowed from about 31% in an April 2025 San Francisco comparison to about 12.7% in the latest broad Bay Area sample. Short trips and rush hour can produce a much larger gap. Check the live quote, include any Uber tip you would normally pay, and treat averages as benchmarks—not guaranteed prices.
