Editor’s note: April 2026’s MacBook Air promotions have ended and should be treated as a historical deal snapshot, not a live offer. The headline “save up to $600” referred to a potential Best Buy trade-in credit—not a $600 price cut. The strongest direct discount was $150, bringing select 13-inch MacBook Air M5 models from $1,099 to $949.

Best overall: Best Buy’s $949 MacBook Air M5
Best Buy listed the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M5 chip, 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD for $949, down from $1,099. That was a straightforward $150 reduction before tax.
The retailer also advertised up to $600 in trade-in credit. In one reported example, Best Buy’s calculator valued a MacBook Air M3 in good condition at $600. If a shopper received that exact valuation, the arithmetic looked like this:

That $349 figure was not the shelf price and was not available to every customer. The credit depended on the device being traded in, its condition and Best Buy’s final valuation. A damaged, lower-capacity or older MacBook could receive substantially less. The trade-in value also meant giving up the old computer, so compare it with what you could get by selling the device privately.

Best Buy’s promotion was reported as part of its Ultimate Upgrade Sale, scheduled to run through Sunday, April 19, 2026. Since the promotion has ended, any current Best Buy price or trade-in quote must be checked separately.
Best no-trade-in option: Amazon’s $949 M5
Amazon offered the same basic 13-inch M5 configuration—16GB memory and 512GB storage—for $949, down from $1,099. This was the simpler deal for buyers who did not have an eligible laptop to exchange: the $150 savings came directly off the purchase price.
The reported Amazon prices for higher-storage configurations were:
- 16GB/1TB: $1,149, reduced from $1,299.
- 24GB/1TB: $1,349, reduced from $1,499.
The $949 price was reported again on April 27 as a record-low price at that time. Amazon prices can change quickly, and marketplace listings may differ by seller, condition, warranty and return terms. For a high-priced purchase, confirm that the listing is new, sold by a reputable seller and covered by the expected return policy before paying.

M4 MacBook Air deals at B&H
The M4 MacBook Air was the previous generation by April 2026, after Apple released the M5 MacBook Air on March 11. That made M4 models worth considering only when the price difference justified buying older hardware.
B&H reported the following 13-inch M4 discounts through May 2, 2026:

These were not cheaper than the $949 M5 base model, but they offered more memory or storage. A 2TB M4 may make sense for someone who needs local storage and does not want to pay for cloud storage or an external SSD. For ordinary browsing, office work, schoolwork and photo management, however, the $949 M5 was the newer platform at a lower starting price.
What Apple’s Earth Day promotion actually covered
Apple’s April promotion was easy to misread as a general MacBook Air discount. It was not an online 10% price cut.

From April 16 through May 16, Apple offered 10% off the retail price of an eligible promotion product when the customer recycled an eligible device at a participating physical Apple Store. The recycling and purchase had to happen in the same transaction.
Important restrictions included:
- Apple Store Online, the Apple Store app, Apple Pickup, Ship to Home and telephone orders were excluded.
- Customers could recycle up to five eligible devices.
- Refurbished and open-box products did not qualify.
- Sales tax could be calculated on the product’s full price rather than the discounted amount.
If a $1,099 MacBook Air qualified, a 10% reduction would equal $109.90 before tax. That was materially different from a $600 discount and required an eligible device plus an in-store transaction.
Which MacBook Air configuration was the best value?
For most buyers, the 13-inch M5 at $949 was the cleanest deal. It included 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage—twice the standard storage of earlier entry-level Air configurations—and avoided the uncertainty of a trade-in.
Choose the 1TB version if your work involves large photo libraries, video files, development environments or other data that you need available offline. The 24GB/1TB model was more appropriate for heavier multitasking, virtual machines or memory-intensive creative work, but it cost $400 more than the $949 base deal.

The 15-inch model was not part of the specific $949 offers in the reported deals. Apple’s original M5 pricing started at $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch model, with education pricing of $999 and $1,199 respectively.
The M5 generation included 512GB standard storage, 16GB standard memory, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, a 12MP Center Stage camera, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, support for up to two external displays and up to 18 hours of battery life. It was available in sky blue, midnight, starlight and silver.
How to evaluate a MacBook Air deal
- Separate the instant discount from the trade-in value. A $949 laptop with a possible $600 credit is not the same as a $449 laptop, and the credit requires surrendering another device.
- Check the exact specification. Confirm the chip, screen size, memory and SSD capacity. Retailers often list several configurations under one product family.
- Calculate the full checkout cost. Add sales tax, shipping and any accessories. A discounted laptop may still require a charger, hub or external storage for your setup.
- Value your old Mac independently. Compare Best Buy’s quote with private-sale listings and other buyback services. Convenience may justify a lower trade-in value, but it is still part of the purchase economics.
- Check the seller and return policy. This matters especially on Amazon and marketplace listings. Confirm the item is new and that the warranty is valid in your country.
- Do not assume an expired price is still available. The April prices were time-limited. Apple’s U.S. Mac shopping page listed the MacBook Air starting at $1,299 as of August 9, 2026, so the April $949 prices should not be used as current quotes.
