The purchase price was not disclosed. The deal showed strategic interest in connecting patient communication with value-based care; by itself, it does not prove that the market was growing or that digital care plans improve outcomes.
What Caravan Health acquired
Founded in 2012, Wellpepper developed software that health organizations could use to create interactive care plans and patient-facing apps. Its tools supported chronic and acute care plans, individualized instructions, messages and alerts, and collection of information about patient progress. GeekWire and MobiHealthNews reported that Caravan acquired Wellpepper’s technology, team, and customers. Most Wellpepper employees joined Caravan, according to GeekWire.
Caravan worked with hospitals and provider groups on ACOs and value-based payment models. The strategic fit was complementary: Wellpepper’s tools focused on patient-facing engagement and adherence support, while Caravan supported provider organizations with ACO implementation, population health, and payment-model work. Caravan said it wanted to improve communication between care teams and patients.
Why the deal was framed as a market signal
The acquisition illustrated a strategic interest in patient engagement technology among organizations working in value-based care. Caravan’s rationale was that better communication between patients and care managers could complement its provider-side programs. That is a plausible business fit, not proof that every digital care-plan tool improves clinical outcomes or reduces costs.

Former Wellpepper CEO Anne Weiler predicted more consolidation around patient engagement in the 2020 MobiHealthNews report. That was her contemporaneous opinion, not an independently measured forecast or market-size estimate. No market growth rate or size is established by the cited reporting.
The coverage also does not provide the underlying papers, sample sizes, methods, or effect estimates for clinical research discussed by Weiler. MobiHealthNews quoted her attributing improvements in self-efficacy, adherence, and mobility, as well as fewer emergency-department visits, to Wellpepper’s work with researchers at Harvard and Boston University. Those claims should be understood as her account of the research, not as independently assessed findings here.

What is known about the price—and what is not
Caravan did not disclose what it paid for Wellpepper. GeekWire reported that Wellpepper had raised $1.5 million in funding over its lifetime; that is the startup’s reported funding, not the acquisition price. A Caravan spokesperson also told MobiHealthNews that the company’s clients had generated more than $135 million in projected Medicare savings in 2019. That was a company-reported figure, not an independently audited result in the cited article.
Wellpepper said in a 2018 press release that its adaptive notification system achieved more than 70 percent patient engagement. This is a company claim, not independent validation. The release also described a Wellpepper Marketplace offering care-plan templates, including Mayo Clinic best practices. Wellpepper’s 2018 press release provides that historical context, but it does not establish current product availability.
How the later Caravan acquisition fits in
Signify Health completed its acquisition of Caravan Health on March 1, 2022. Signify’s announcement put the initial purchase price at $250 million—$190 million in cash and $60 million in Signify stock—with contingent additional payments of up to $50 million. These figures are for Signify’s purchase of Caravan, not Caravan’s 2020 acquisition of Wellpepper. The terms are set out in the SEC-filed announcement and Signify Health’s 2022 Form 10-Q.
VSS Capital Partners, which owned Caravan for four years, later identified Wellpepper as Caravan’s strategic acquisition and said Caravan’s ACO revenue doubled during that ownership period. That performance statement is VSS’s account; it does not isolate Wellpepper’s contribution. VSS Capital Partners’ announcement provides its description of Caravan’s growth.

Is Wellpepper still available?
The cited accounts do not establish whether the Wellpepper platform is still commercially available, what name it may use, or who owns it now. The 2020 acquisition and Signify’s later purchase of Caravan do not, on their own, confirm a current product or ownership relationship.
