Yes—but the comparison is for one month, not a new annual ranking. In June 2025, Canada imported C$1.08 billion in passenger vehicles from Mexico and C$950 million from the United States, according to figures reported by Mexico News Daily. For all of 2024, the annual data show a much larger import value from the U.S. than from Mexico.
What happened in June 2025?
Statistics Canada reported that imports of passenger cars and light trucks rose 6.9% from May, with higher imports from Mexico contributing substantially to the increase. Its June 2025 trade release was published August 5, 2025. The specific country comparison—C$1.08 billion from Mexico versus C$950 million from the U.S.—was reported by Mexico News Daily from Statistics Canada figures.
That is a lead in import value for passenger vehicles in June alone. It does not establish that more vehicles were imported by unit count, or that Mexico became Canada’s leading source for the full year.
How does the monthly result compare with the annual picture?
For calendar 2024, Canada imported about US$16.221 billion in HS 8703 passenger motor vehicles from the United States and US$6.147 billion from Mexico, according to World Bank WITS/UN Comtrade data. That annual comparison uses U.S.-dollar trade values and a defined customs product category; it is not the same period or precisely the same product wording as Statistics Canada’s June release.

What the figures do—and do not—show
- A single-month value lead: The June comparison is measured in Canadian dollars and says nothing by itself about full-year totals or vehicle counts.
- Different product definitions: Statistics Canada describes passenger cars and light trucks; the WITS annual comparison is HS 8703, motor vehicles principally designed to transport persons, subject to that classification’s exclusions. The categories should not be treated as identical.
- Origin is not ownership: A vehicle counted as imported from Mexico is not necessarily made by a Mexican-owned automaker, and its country of import does not describe where every component was produced.
- No proven tariff explanation: The official release points to higher imports from Mexico as a major contributor to the June category increase, but it does not establish that tariffs caused the monthly crossover.
A longer-term shift is visible in the U.S. International Trade Commission’s analysis of light-vehicle imports: the U.S. share of Canada’s light-vehicle imports decreased while Mexico’s share increased, with the U.S. decline largely driven by passenger vehicles. That trend provides context, but it does not turn the June result into an annual ranking or identify the cause of that month’s figures.
Is Mexico still ahead?
The available figures here do not establish whether Mexico remained ahead after June 2025. To verify a later comparison, use Statistics Canada’s monthly table 12-10-0178-01 and compare the same product scope, period, valuation currency, and country measure. Where a trade table distinguishes country of origin from country of export, keep that distinction consistent as well.

Statistics Canada also noted that its primary import-statistics data source underwent a significant transition connected with the Canada Border Services Agency’s CARM digital initiative, implemented October 21, 2024. That context matters when assessing comparability or revisions across periods; it is not, by itself, an explanation for the June ranking.
