Satellite imagery reporting in 2024 showed crowded Tesla lots, but it did not prove that every visible car was unsold—or establish a worldwide count. Tesla’s own figures show a large production-delivery gap in Q1 2024, followed by lower reported inventory days in Q2. The latest complete inventory-days figure available on October 4, 2026, is 15 days for Q2 2026; Tesla had not yet published its Q3 2026 inventory measure.
What the “visible from orbit” headline actually means
“There Are Now So Many Unsold Teslas That You Can See Them From Orbit” was the headline of a June 10, 2024 Futurism report about satellite imagery showing crowded lots at Tesla sales centers and the Fremont factory. The story cited imagery reporting by Sherwood News. The headline describes what imagery made visible; it is not a verified company-wide count of unsold cars.

A car visible in a lot may be awaiting delivery, in transit, or otherwise not yet transferred to its customer. The imagery accounts do not establish each vehicle’s sale status, how long it stayed at a location, or the total number of vehicles across Tesla sites.
What the satellite imagery counted
A CleanTechnica account of Sherwood News’ work says the analysis used SkyFi imagery and object detection. It reported 465 Teslas at Chesterfield Mall in May 2024. That is a reported count at one location, not a global inventory total or confirmation that all 465 vehicles were unsold.

How Tesla’s production and delivery figures compare
Tesla reported producing 433,371 vehicles and delivering 386,810 in Q1 2024, a difference of 46,561. The figures come from the company’s Q1 production and delivery release. Tesla defines a delivery as a vehicle transferred to an end customer with completed paperwork.
That quarter’s production-delivery difference is not a count of cars parked unsold at quarter-end. The timing of production, transport and completed customer transfers can differ; the published figures do not specify how much of the gap was physically stored at lots versus in transit or otherwise awaiting delivery.
| Period | Produced | Delivered | Production minus deliveries | Global inventory supply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2024 | 433,371 | 386,810 | 46,561 | 28 days |
| Q2 2024 | 410,831 | 443,956 | -33,125 | 18 days |
| Q2 2026 | 451,758 | 480,126 | -28,368 | 15 days |
| Q3 2026 | 464,391 | 486,532 | -22,141 | Not yet published as of Oct. 4, 2026 |
Q1 and Q2 2024 production, deliveries and inventory days are reported in Tesla’s Q2 2024 update; Q2 2026 figures are in its Q2 2026 update. Q3 2026 production and deliveries are from Tesla’s Oct. 2, 2026 release. Differences in the table are calculated by subtracting deliveries from production. They are not quarter-end parked-car counts.

Tesla’s company-reported global inventory supply measure fell from 28 days in Q1 2024 to 18 days in Q2 2024. The Q2 update says Tesla produced fewer vehicles than it delivered and that inventory decreased by $1.8 billion sequentially, contributing to positive free cash flow. Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja, discussing Q1 2024 free cash flow, said the primary driver was “an increase in inventory from a mismatch between builds,” and said the company expected the inventory built to reverse in Q2. The subsequent Q2 figures support that the reported buildup eased; they do not show which specific cars moved or whether every vehicle seen in imagery sold.
Tesla’s Q2 2026 update gives the latest complete inventory-days measure available as of October 4, 2026: 15 days. The company calculates days of supply using new-vehicle ending inventory and deliveries, based on trading days. This global company measure is not directly comparable to a satellite count at one site.
What is known about Q3 2026
Tesla’s Oct. 2, 2026 release reports Q3 production of 464,391 and deliveries of 486,532. Deliveries exceeded production by 22,141, but the release did not include Q3 inventory days. Tesla scheduled its Q3 financial results for Oct. 21, 2026, so the Q2 figure remains the latest complete inventory-supply measure at the date of this article.
What the figures do—and do not—explain
The company’s quarterly disclosures provide a consistent way to follow production, deliveries and inventory supply over time; imagery provides a location-specific view. Neither establishes why the Q1 2024 mismatch occurred in causal terms. Competition, consumer sentiment and leadership-related explanations may appear in commentary, but the cited figures and imagery do not quantify their contribution or prove them as causes.
