How to Calculate Dividend Income from an ASX Share Investment

Calculate ASX cash dividends by multiplying eligible shares by the dividend per share, then add payments. Learn how franking credits affect tax reporting without adding to cash received.

For cash dividend income, multiply the number of shares entitled to a payment by the dividend per share, then add the payments made during your chosen period. For Australian resident individuals, the tax-return amount can differ: eligible franking credits are generally included in assessable income and claimed as a tax offset, but they are not extra cash received.

Calculate cash dividends from your ASX shares

For each payment, use this formula:

Shares entitled to the dividend × dividend per share = cash dividend for that payment

For example, if you qualified for a dividend on 250 shares at A$0.40 per share, the cash dividend is 250 × A$0.40 = A$100. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a quoted market statistic.

To calculate historical cash income for a period, add the actual payments received or credited in that period. Choose whether you are measuring one payment or a longer period such as a financial year, and use dividend statements and company announcements to confirm amounts and dates. Keep estimates for future dividends separate from amounts actually paid: companies can change, reduce, omit or pay special dividends, and may retain earnings instead. The ASX explains that many listed companies pay interim and final dividends, but payment frequency varies: ASX: Learn the different types of shares and how they work.

Worked example: add payments over a period

Assume you held 250 shares entitled to both an interim dividend of A$0.40 per share and a later final dividend of A$0.45 per share:

  • Interim payment: 250 × A$0.40 = A$100
  • Final payment: 250 × A$0.45 = A$112.50
  • Total cash dividends for the two payments: A$212.50

This total is cash only. Any franking credit shown on a statement is handled separately for tax; it does not increase the cash paid.

Check whether you were entitled to each dividend

The share count for your calculation is the number of shares entitled to that particular dividend, not necessarily the number you own now. The ex-dividend date and record date determine entitlement; the payment date is when the company pays it. ASX states that a shareholder must buy before the ex-dividend date to receive the announced dividend. Check the dates in the company’s announcement, as schedules vary: ASX: Learn the different types of shares and how they work.

Separate cash received from dividend income for tax

For an Australian resident individual, a franked dividend can involve two figures: the cash dividend and an attached franking credit. If you are eligible to claim the credit, the dividend and credit are generally included in assessable income, and the credit is also applied as a tax offset. The franking credit is not cash paid to you. An unfranked dividend has no attached franking credit.

Use the dividend statement to identify the franked and unfranked amounts, franking credits, payment date and any tax file number (TFN) amounts withheld. The ATO’s 2025 individual return instructions direct taxpayers to include the relevant dividend and eligible credit amounts, and treat TFN withholding as part of the unfranked amount for the return. Do not count withholding a second time as additional cash received. See the ATO’s You and your shares 2025 and 2025 individual return instructions for dividends.

Eligibility rules can prevent a resident individual from claiming a franking credit in some situations, including holding-period, related-payment and dividend-washing rules. The tax treatment discussed here is for resident individuals; residency status, trusts, companies, superannuation entities, managed funds and special arrangements can change the result. Use ATO guidance for the relevant income year rather than assuming that the same treatment applies to every investor.

Keep the two calculations distinct

Measure What to calculate What it represents
Cash dividend income Add the dividend payments received or credited during the chosen period. Cash paid to you; franking credits are excluded.
Dividend amounts for tax Use the statement’s franked and unfranked amounts, eligible franking credits and applicable withholding information. Amounts used in the tax calculation under the rules for your circumstances and income year.

These figures answer different questions. Do not compare a cash total with a tax amount that includes franking credits as if they were equivalent measures.
