Sometimes, but a replacement request does not automatically let you choose a new design. Whether you can get a different look depends on your issuer, your specific card product, and whether it offers a separate design-change process. If your card is lost or stolen, report it promptly first; ask about design options without delaying that report.
Replacement and design change may be separate requests
A replacement is generally issued because a card is lost, stolen, damaged, or otherwise needs to be replaced. A design change is a request to alter the card’s appearance. An issuer may handle these through different procedures, so requesting a replacement does not necessarily let you select a new design.

Wells Fargo illustrates why the distinction matters. Its Card Design Studio FAQ says that when an already customized card is lost or stolen, the replacement will have the same design as the lost or stolen card. That is Wells Fargo’s rule for the service it describes, not a universal rule for other issuers. The FAQ also says use of Card Design Studio currently has no fee; check the issuer’s current terms before relying on that detail.

Other issuers may offer customization separately, may limit it to eligible products, or may not state that a replacement request includes a design choice. Treat the design option and the replacement itself as two questions unless your issuer confirms they can be handled together.

The examples are issuer-specific. The Chase delivery estimate is not a promise that every request, card, or location will have the same timing. Likewise, the Japanese fee and delivery estimate should not be used to predict the cost or speed of a request elsewhere.
What to do if your card is lost or stolen
- Report the card promptly through your issuer’s stated channel. Use the issuer’s app, website, or other reporting method. Do not wait to find out whether your preferred design is available before reporting a missing card.
- Ask how the replacement will be handled. Confirm whether the replacement will use the existing design, and whether a design change can be requested separately or at the same time.
- Follow the issuer’s instructions for the compromised card. The issuer can explain what to do with the missing card and how to use the replacement process. Do not assume that a design request itself reports the loss or theft.
For example, Chase describes replacement requests through its mobile app or website and gives a 5–7 business day arrival estimate. Wells Fargo says lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately. These are examples of those issuers’ processes, not substitutes for checking the instructions for your own account.

How to request a different design
- Identify the exact card product. Have the card name and account details available when contacting the issuer. Design availability can depend on the specific product, not just the issuer.
- Ask whether your card is eligible. Find out what designs, if any, are available for that product and whether the option is open to your account.
- Clarify how the requests are connected. Ask whether you must submit a separate design-change request, can choose a design as part of a replacement, or must wait until the replacement has arrived. Mitsui Sumitomo Card, for example, says its design change cannot be made at the same time as reissuance for a lost or stolen card; that restriction is specific to its stated process.
- Confirm cost and timing before submitting. Ask whether there is a fee, when it would be charged, and how long delivery is expected to take. A design-change estimate may differ from the timing for an ordinary replacement.
- Ask what happens to the card and account details. Confirm whether the card number, expiration date, or security code will change, and whether other cardholders or authorized users on the account are affected. These details are not established as universal outcomes.
- Keep the issuer’s confirmation. Save the request confirmation and any instructions about when the new card is usable or what to do with the old one.
Questions to ask before submitting a request
- Is a different design available for my exact card product and account?
- Is design selection separate from replacing the card, or can both be requested together?
- If my card is lost or stolen, should I report it or order the replacement before making a design request?
- Is there a fee, and what delivery estimate applies to this particular request?
- Will the card number, expiration date, or security code change?
- Will the request affect additional cardholders or authorized users, and do they need to submit separate requests?
Do not assume that a new appearance means the payment credentials will change, or that credentials will stay the same. Ask the issuer directly: the available information does not establish a general rule for card numbers or security details after a design change.
When a different design may not be available with a replacement
Your issuer may require the replacement to match the design already associated with the card, or may require a separate request after the replacement process. A card product may also have no published customization option. If the issuer cannot combine the requests, ask whether you can request a design change later and whether that later request has a separate fee or delivery estimate.

If your goal is simply to replace a damaged card, ask whether the issuer treats that differently from a lost-or-stolen reissue. Do not assume that the procedure or design rules are identical: only the issuer can confirm how the reason for replacement affects your request.

Before submitting, get confirmation of eligibility, whether the requests can be combined, any charge and delivery estimate, and the effects on card details and other cardholders. If the card is missing, handle the security report first.
