What Apple Intelligence Does With Your Data—and How to Protect Your Privacy

Apple Intelligence handles many requests on-device, but some may go to Private Cloud Compute. Learn what Apple says it sends, what the activity report shows, and how to manage optional analytics.

Apple Intelligence processes many requests on your device, but not all of them. When a task needs more computing power, Apple says it can send request-relevant data to Private Cloud Compute (PCC), its server-based system. Apple says PCC uses that data to answer the request and does not retain it or make it accessible to Apple. Separate, limited processing metrics may still be collected, and Device Analytics is an optional, separate setting.

That distinction matters: “processed privately” does not mean nothing ever leaves your device. Here’s how the data paths differ, how to check what Apple reports, how to control optional analytics, and what those controls do—and do not—cover.

How Apple Intelligence handles a request

Apple describes two main processing paths. Many Apple Intelligence models run locally on a compatible device. If a request needs more capacity, the device may route relevant data to Private Cloud Compute (PCC), Apple’s server-based system. Which path applies depends on the task; Apple does not say every feature uses the same data or processing route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful shorthand is on-device by default for many tasks, with a conditional cloud path for some more complex tasks. That is not a promise that every request stays local, nor that every cloud request is handled identically. The data path depends on the capability and the request. Apple’s published explanation is the best source for its design claims, but those claims should not be treated as an independent operational audit.

Processing path Where it happens What Apple says about data What to keep in mind
On-device processing On the device For tasks handled locally, processing stays on the device. Apple says many Apple Intelligence models run on device. The PCC activity report is not a complete log of local processing.
Private Cloud Compute Apple silicon servers running PCC Apple says only data relevant to the request is sent, used to fulfill it, and not retained or made accessible to Apple. Apple also discloses limited non-content metrics, and PCC protections should not be generalized to separate Search or extension paths.

For example, Apple says on-device information such as upcoming calendar events or frequently used apps can help personalize some capabilities. Priority Notifications is an example Apple gives of an on-device model making a determination. In practical terms, locally available context can help a feature prioritize or tailor a result without that example requiring a cloud request. But it should not be read as a claim that every Apple Intelligence feature can access every app, or that all features use the same context and processing route.

Apple also does not publish one simple, permanent list that answers which route every possible request will take. Features, platform versions, languages, regions, and device eligibility can change. If a particular capability matters to you, check Apple’s current support information for that feature and device rather than assuming that the general description settles its exact behavior.

When a request goes to Private Cloud Compute

Apple says the device determines when a request needs a larger server-based model. It then sends data relevant to that request to PCC, which processes it for the task and securely returns a result. Apple’s privacy disclosure states: “The data being processed in Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple.” This describes Apple’s stated handling of PCC request data; it is not independent confirmation of every operational detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phrase “data relevant to the request” is important. Apple’s explanation is not that a complete copy of everything on the device is sent whenever Apple Intelligence is used. Rather, Apple says the request data needed for the particular task is sent when the device routes that task to PCC. The sources reviewed do not establish the precise contents of every possible request, so avoid assuming that a specific feature always sends the same set of information. The useful question is whether the task is local, handled through PCC, or involves another service such as Search or an enabled extension.

Apple describes several safeguards for PCC. Its published account includes Secure Enclave protection for server keys, Secure Boot, signed and verified software, a Trusted Execution Monitor, and device attestation of the PCC cluster. Apple also says independent researchers can inspect the software that runs on Apple silicon servers. These are components of Apple’s stated architecture and verification approach; they are not proof that every conceivable privacy risk has been eliminated, and the reviewed sources do not provide an independent audit finding.

PCC may not be available in every region. Availability, hardware eligibility, languages, and feature behavior can change over time, so the current Apple support page is more reliable than a static device or region list. A compatible device alone does not guarantee that every Apple Intelligence feature is available to every user in every language or location.

Limited metrics are separate from request content

Apple says it may collect limited information about PCC or Private Information Retrieval (PIR) requests: the approximate size of a request and its response, which feature was used, and how long processing took. Apple says these metrics do not include the request or returned-result content and are not identifiable or linked to an Apple Account or other Apple-service data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a different category from the prompt or material used to fulfill a request. A statement that Apple may receive non-content metrics is not the same as saying it retains the request itself. Conversely, “request data is not retained” should not be simplified into “Apple gathers no information at all.” Apple’s own disclosure distinguishes the contents of the request and result from limited operational measurements. These are Apple’s disclosures, not an independent measurement of its systems.

Does Apple Intelligence store or train on your data?

For PCC requests, Apple says request data is not retained by PCC or made accessible to Apple. That statement does not mean Apple collects no information at all: limited non-content metrics described above may be collected, and users who opt in to Device Analytics can contribute privacy-protected aggregate trends.

On training, Apple’s privacy overview says private personal data and interactions are not used to train its foundation models unless a user explicitly chooses to help improve them. Keep the opt-in qualification in view: this is not a blanket claim that no data of any kind is ever used in model development. Apple’s statement is specifically about private personal data and interactions and includes the exception for a user who chooses to contribute. See Apple’s Privacy — Features for its published explanation.

Device Analytics is another distinct choice. Apple says people who opt in may contribute privacy-protected aggregated trends, including trends about content processed by Apple Intelligence. That is not the same thing as a particular PCC request being stored or a user’s prompt being used to train a model. The available description concerns aggregate trends and an opt-in analytics setting; it does not make the analytics control a switch for all Apple Intelligence processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Web searches and information retrieval are different paths

Some requests need current information from the web. Apple says Apple Intelligence can use Search to retrieve it, but its Apple Intelligence privacy disclosure refers readers to a separate Siri Suggestions and Search disclosure for how those searches are handled. The PCC no-retention statement should not be assumed to describe every external web search or service involved. A task involving fresh web information is not automatically covered by the same explanation as a request processed by PCC.

  • Online video installation instruction: Easiest Installation - removing dust and aligning it properly before actual installation, enjoy your screen as if it wasn't there.

Apple also describes Private Information Retrieval, or PIR, as a cryptographic protocol intended to fetch matching hosted data without revealing the specific query to the server. Apple gives suggested images and Genmoji as examples. PIR is a separate mechanism from PCC, although Apple says limited non-content request metrics may apply to PIR requests too. Do not conflate the two: PCC is Apple’s server-based processing system for some complex requests, while PIR is the described method for retrieving matching hosted data without revealing the specific query to the server.

Enabled Apple Intelligence Extensions can also appear in transparency logging. Their presence is another reason not to treat a PCC report or PCC statement as a complete account of every service path. Apple describes extensions separately, and the reviewed sources do not support extending PCC’s no-retention statement to every enabled extension or external service.

How to see Apple Intelligence cloud activity

Apple provides a transparency report for requests sent off device and processed through PCC. On iPhone, Apple’s support guide gives this path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report.
  2. Choose the reporting window: Last 15 Minutes (the default) or Last 7 Days.
  3. Review the activity and use the export option if you want to save the report.

Apple notes that the report may be empty if no PCC requests were made during the selected period. An empty report is therefore not proof that Apple Intelligence has never used the cloud; it only says there is no reportable activity in that window. If you want a broader view, choose the seven-day option rather than the default 15-minute window, while remembering that this is still a limited reporting period.

The report is focused on off-device PCC processing, not a complete log of everything processed locally. It also should not be read as a universal network activity report: Apple’s documentation describes the report as logging PCC activity, and separately discusses Search, PIR, and extensions. Do not use a blank report to conclude that no Apple Intelligence processing occurred at all; local work would not be the focus of this PCC report.

Apple’s legal disclosure calls the transparency log the Apple Intelligence & PCC Report and documents it for iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, and Mac. Enabled Apple Intelligence Extensions may also appear. The iPhone user guide uses the menu name Apple Intelligence Report. Names, menus, and locations can differ by platform or software release, so confirm the current instructions for the device in hand rather than assuming the iPhone path applies on Mac or another platform. Apple’s iPhone instructions and reporting windows are in Apple Intelligence and privacy on iPhone.

If you export a report, treat it as a record of the logged activity for the selected period, not a guarantee that it answers every question about data handling. The report can help you understand whether PCC requests were logged in that window. It does not replace Apple’s disclosures about local processing, analytics, Search, or other routes, and it cannot by itself independently verify Apple’s statements about retention or access.

How to turn off optional analytics sharing

Device Analytics is separate from PCC routing. Apple says users who opt in may contribute privacy-protected aggregate trends, including trends about content processed by Apple Intelligence. To stop sharing analytics, use the analytics control rather than looking for a setting that disables PCC:

  1. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
  2. Turn off the device analytics sharing option, labeled Share iPhone Analytics or the corresponding device-specific Share Analytics control.
  3. On Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and turn off the Mac analytics sharing option.

Apple’s documentation places this setting under Analytics & Improvements. Exact labels can vary by device and software version, so look for the Share Analytics control for the device you are using. The research supports turning off the relevant device or Mac analytics toggle; it does not identify this as a control for changing Apple Intelligence’s model routing.

Turning off analytics controls this optional sharing; it does not disable Apple Intelligence or prevent a feature from routing a request to PCC when Apple says more capacity is needed. These are separate controls and purposes. Likewise, turning analytics on does not mean that Apple retains the contents of every PCC request: Apple describes opt-in Device Analytics as contributing privacy-protected aggregate trends, while its PCC disclosure separately addresses request content and limited operational metrics.

What this means for your privacy decisions

  • Use the activity report to check PCC activity. It can show cloud requests in its selected window, but it is not a record of on-device processing or every web search.
  • Decide separately about Device Analytics. The opt-in analytics contribution is not the same as sending a request to PCC, and the analytics setting is not an Apple Intelligence off switch.
  • Consider the feature and information involved. Apple distinguishes among local processing, PCC, Search, PIR, and enabled extensions; do not assume PCC protections automatically cover all those paths.
  • Check current availability before relying on a feature. Eligibility and feature behavior vary by hardware, language, region, platform, and software release. Apple’s current support materials are the appropriate reference rather than an old compatibility list.
  • Keep the strength of the evidence in perspective. Apple’s legal and support pages describe Apple’s own system and privacy claims. The reviewed sources do not supply an independent audit report or cross-vendor measurements.

There is no basis in these sources for recommending a screen protector, VPN, or generic security app as a way to control Apple Intelligence processing. The privacy controls covered here are Apple’s report and Analytics & Improvements settings, while the processing route is described as depending on the request. Buying a compatible device enables access to features where available; it does not, by itself, change the data path or prove that data is protected in a particular way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s current published descriptions are useful for understanding its design and controls, but they remain Apple’s own claims. Apple says researchers can inspect PCC software; that statement is not itself an independent audit finding. For broader context on Apple’s statements about Siri and PCC, see its January 8, 2025 privacy commitment with Siri.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Apple Intelligence send my data to Apple?

Sometimes, according to Apple. Many requests are processed on device. When a task needs more computing capacity, Apple says the device can send request-relevant data to Private Cloud Compute (PCC). Apple says PCC processes it for that task and does not retain it or make it accessible to Apple. Search, Private Information Retrieval, and enabled extensions are separate paths, so the PCC explanation should not be applied to every service involved.

Does Apple Intelligence store my prompts or use them to train models?

Apple says PCC request data is not retained or made accessible to Apple. It may collect limited non-content metrics such as approximate request and response size, feature used, and processing time. Separately, Apple says private personal data and interactions are not used to train its foundation models unless a user explicitly chooses to help improve them. Those are Apple’s stated policies, and the training statement includes that opt-in exception.

How can I see what Apple Intelligence sent to the cloud?

On iPhone, Apple’s guide says to open Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report, choose Last 15 Minutes (the default) or Last 7 Days, then review or export the report. It is focused on PCC requests, not all local processing or every web search. If it is empty, Apple says there may have been no PCC request in the selected period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If I turn off Share Analytics, will Apple Intelligence still use Private Cloud Compute?

Apple describes Device Analytics sharing and PCC routing as separate. Turning off the device or Mac analytics sharing option under Analytics & Improvements stops the optional analytics contribution; it does not disable Apple Intelligence or prevent a request from being routed to PCC when Apple says server capacity is needed.

Does an empty Apple Intelligence Report mean nothing was processed?

No. Apple says the report can be empty when there were no PCC requests during its selected 15-minute or seven-day window. It is not a complete activity log: local processing is outside its PCC focus, and the documentation treats Search and other paths separately.

Does PCC’s privacy description cover web searches and extensions too?

Not automatically. Apple refers to a separate Siri Suggestions and Search disclosure for web-search handling. Its legal disclosure also describes Private Information Retrieval and enabled extensions separately. The reviewed sources do not support applying PCC’s no-retention statement to every search or extension.

Is Apple Intelligence available on every Apple device, in every language and region?

No universal compatibility list is durable. Apple says availability and feature behavior can depend on eligible hardware, language, region, platform, and software release; PCC may not be available in every region. Check Apple’s current support information for the specific device and feature you intend to use.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Apple says many Apple Intelligence tasks run on device, while some complex requests can send relevant data to Private Cloud Compute. Apple says PCC does not retain that request data or make it accessible to Apple, though limited non-content metrics may be collected. Use the Apple Intelligence report to review recent PCC activity, and manage optional Device Analytics separately under Analytics & Improvements. Neither control is a complete log or a universal off switch; check Apple’s current documentation for the feature, platform, language, and region you use.
