Start by checking the supplier’s GSTIN in the GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer function, then compare the official taxpayer details with the invoice and the supplier you know. If the supplier and transaction were required to use e-invoicing, verify the IRP-signed QR code or search the invoice reference number (IRN) and compare the returned record with your copy. These checks help verify registration identity and e-invoice data; neither proves by itself that a supply occurred or that you can claim input tax credit.
What to check first
There are two different questions behind “Is this GST invoice genuine?” First, does the GSTIN on the invoice belong to the business named there, with registration details that make sense for the supplier you deal with? Second, if e-invoicing applies to this supplier and document, does the invoice’s QR code or IRN lead to a matching record on an Invoice Registration Portal (IRP)? Check identity first, then the invoice record where applicable.

A printed GSTIN, logo, QR image, or professional layout is not enough. A genuine-looking document can still contain a wrong GSTIN, incorrect buyer details, or invoice information that does not match an official e-invoice record. Use the GST Portal and IRP verification facilities rather than judging the document by appearance.

A taxpayer lookup answers an identity question about a GSTIN or UIN. An IRP check concerns the reported e-invoice data associated with a particular document. A positive result on one is not a substitute for the other, and neither independently confirms that the described goods or services were actually supplied.

Step 1: Verify the supplier’s GSTIN on the GST Portal
- Open the GST Portal and choose Search Taxpayer. The GST Portal’s taxpayer manual describes a pre-login search. Enter the GSTIN or UIN printed on the invoice.
- Check that a taxpayer record appears. Review the legal name and trade name, if shown, and compare them with the supplier named on the invoice and the business you intended to pay.
- Compare the registration details. Review the effective registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business, and cancellation date where applicable. The portal may also show return-filing details.
- Look for a relationship you can explain. A trade name may differ from a legal name, so compare both rather than treating every difference as proof of fraud. The supplier’s known identity, the invoice, and the official record should fit together. If they do not, pause and ask the supplier through a contact channel you already trust.
- Record what you checked. Keep a copy of the invoice and a record of the taxpayer result, such as a dated screenshot or saved note. This gives you a contemporaneous record of the details you compared.
Enter the GSTIN carefully: a transposed or omitted character can produce a failed lookup even when the issue is a typing error rather than a false document. If no record appears, first compare the number you entered with the number printed on the invoice. Then obtain the supplier’s GSTIN through a contact channel you already know, and search again. Do not treat a failed search as conclusive proof of fraud until you have ruled out a simple entry mistake.
A matching taxpayer profile establishes that the GSTIN maps to the taxpayer identity and registration details displayed by the portal. It does not authenticate every invoice issued under that GSTIN. A valid GSTIN could appear on a document whose buyer, invoice number, value, or transaction details are wrong, so continue to the invoice-specific check when e-invoicing applies.
Pay attention to status-related details as well as the name. The portal’s pre-login profile can show the effective registration date and, where applicable, a cancellation date. These are useful context when checking whether the displayed registration information fits the invoice and your supplier relationship. The profile may also include return-filing details, but a taxpayer search should not be read as a complete audit of the supplier or as verification of a particular invoice.
Step 2: Decide whether an IRN should be present
Do not treat a missing IRN as proof of fraud until you have established whether e-invoicing was required for the particular supplier and document. The rules apply to specified taxpayers and transactions, have changed over time, and may include conditions or exemptions. Check current GST notifications or obtain qualified tax advice for an applicability decision; do not assume that every GST-registered business or every document must have an IRN.
Numbers found in older guidance can be misleading if presented as today’s rule. For historical context, a GSTN pamphlet dated 2023 and updated on 17 August stated a turnover threshold of ₹5 crore and above from 1 August 2023. That is a statement of the guidance at that time, not a reliable substitute for checking the current rule and the supplier’s circumstances. Applicability depends on the rules in force and the relevant taxpayer and document, so verify it rather than relying on a threshold remembered from an older article or notice.
If e-invoicing does not apply, the absence of an IRN or IRP QR code is not, on its own, a reason to call the invoice fake. If it does apply, proceed to the QR or IRN verification step and compare the record field by field. If you are unsure whether it applies, treat that as a separate question to resolve before drawing conclusions from the absence of an IRN.

Step 3: Verify the signed QR code on an e-invoice
- Use an IRP verification facility. The IRIS IRP verification tool accepts an e-invoice QR code. GSTN also identifies authorised interoperable verification apps. Use an official or authorised route rather than relying on a QR reader’s plain-text display alone.
- Scan the QR code from the invoice. The verification facility should return a result and digitally signed invoice details when the QR is valid. IRIS IRP describes the success message as “Invoice verified successfully.”
- Compare the returned fields with your copy. Check the supplier GSTIN and buyer GSTIN, invoice number, invoice generation date, invoice value, HSN code, IRN, and IRP digital signature information shown by the tool. Compare the returned information with the electronic or printed invoice you received.
- Investigate every material difference. A mismatch in buyer or supplier identity, number, date, or value is a reason to stop processing the document until the supplier explains it and provides a corrected or otherwise substantiated record. Do not assume that a successful scan means the copy in your hands matches the registered invoice.
- Save the result with the invoice. Retain the verification output or a dated record of it alongside the original document, so you can later show which version you checked and what details the verification facility returned.
The point of scanning is to check the invoice data associated with the signed QR, not merely to confirm that a QR-shaped image exists. A copied, altered, or unrelated QR image should be judged by the result returned through verification and whether its details match the invoice in front of you.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not stop at a success message. It tells you that the verification facility returned valid signed invoice details for the QR you checked; the next task is to confirm that those details belong to the invoice you received. A QR may be readable and valid while still leading to details that do not match the displayed buyer, supplier, invoice number, date, or amount. The comparison between the returned record and your copy is what reveals that sort of discrepancy.
Also distinguish an authorised verification route from a generic QR scanner. A basic scanner may display encoded text, but that display is not the same as checking the IRP’s signature and comparing the signed details. GSTN lists authorised interoperable verification apps, and the IRP verification facility is another route. Interfaces and app availability can change, so use the current official GSTN or IRP information to select a verification route.
Step 4: Search by IRN or verify signed JSON
Search by IRN or invoice details
If you have the IRN, use the GSTN e-Invoice portal’s Search IRN facility. GSTN’s FAQ describes searching with the 64-character IRN or, alternatively, with the financial year, document type, and document number to view or download the supplier-generated signed e-invoice. Compare the retrieved record against the invoice copy you received, including the parties, document identifiers, date, and value.
An IRN is a unique identifier generated from the supplier GSTIN, financial year, document type, and document number. IRIS IRP describes it as 64 characters and says it is generated using SHA-256 on those inputs. Treat the IRN as a way to locate and check the e-invoice record, not as proof by itself that the underlying sale or service took place.
If you are searching without the IRN, make sure the financial year, document type, and document number you enter correspond to the invoice you are checking. These identifiers are not interchangeable: a search based on incorrect details may fail to find the record you expect. If a record is returned, do not rely only on the fact that a search succeeded. Check the returned signed invoice against your copy, especially the supplier and buyer GSTINs, number, date, and value.

GSTN’s FAQ describes the facility as a way to view or download the signed e-invoice generated by the supplier. Save the returned record alongside the copy you received and note when you retrieved it. The result is evidence of the invoice data shown by the facility at that time; it is not an independent confirmation of delivery, performance, or the commercial facts behind the invoice.
Check signed JSON when you have that file
If the supplier has provided signed JSON, the IRIS IRP tools page supports uploading signed JSON for signature and content verification. Use that route to check the file’s signature and contents, then compare the verified information with the invoice copy. Keep the returned result with the file and invoice. A signed file is useful evidence about the e-invoice record; it still does not establish that goods or services were actually supplied.
Keep the original file as well as any verification output, and make clear which invoice version the file relates to. If the printed or PDF copy and signed JSON disagree, do not silently choose whichever version is more convenient. Ask the supplier to explain the difference and provide a corrected or otherwise substantiated document, then verify that version too.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Compare registration identity and invoice data separately
Keep the two checks distinct. A taxpayer lookup concerns the GSTIN and registration identity; QR, IRN, or signed-JSON verification concerns the e-invoice record. Passing one check does not make the other unnecessary.
| Check | What to compare | What a match supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| GST Portal taxpayer search | GSTIN/UIN, legal and trade names, effective registration date, business constitution, principal place of business, and cancellation information where applicable. | The GSTIN/UIN maps to the taxpayer profile and registration details displayed by the portal. | That a particular invoice was issued by the supplier, that the transaction happened, or that input tax credit is available. |
| IRP QR verification | Supplier and buyer GSTINs, invoice number, generation date, invoice value, HSN code, IRN, and signature-related details returned by the verification facility. | The QR leads to signed e-invoice details that can be compared with the invoice copy. | That the underlying supply happened, that the stated tax treatment is correct, or that credit is allowable. |
| IRN search or signed JSON verification | The retrieved or verified record and its invoice identifiers and content against the copy received. | The IRP record or verified file corresponds to the details returned through that facility. | That the goods or services were delivered, or that tax and credit questions have been resolved. |
If the official taxpayer profile and the invoice disagree, investigate the identity discrepancy. If the identity matches but the e-invoice result differs, investigate the document discrepancy. If both match, you have stronger evidence that the registration identity and reported e-invoice details align—but not proof of performance, payment, correct tax classification, or credit eligibility.
For a field-by-field review, make a short checklist rather than relying on an overall impression. On the identity side, note the GSTIN or UIN, legal or trade name, and business address shown by the portal, then compare them with the supplier you expected. On the invoice side, compare both parties’ GSTINs, the document number and type, date, value, HSN code, and IRN or signature-related details returned by the applicable verification route. A single mismatch does not tell you its cause, but it does identify the point that needs clarification.

What a successful check cannot prove
- It does not prove that the supply occurred. Portal and IRP checks show registration information or invoice data reported through those systems. They do not independently confirm delivery of goods, completion of services, or the commercial circumstances of the transaction.
- It does not settle who actually dealt with you. A valid GSTIN record does not by itself prove that the named supplier was the party to your particular transaction.
- It does not determine whether the tax rate is correct. A matching invoice record does not establish that the goods or services were classified correctly or that the stated rate is legally appropriate.
- It does not establish input tax credit eligibility. GSTN’s e-invoice download FAQ cautions that portal data is reported by taxpayers for facilitation and information. Whether a document has been properly issued and whether credit is available are separate matters governed by applicable rules.
For a personal finance decision, the practical implication is to treat verification as one part of checking a bill—not as a substitute for checking what you bought, whether the supplier is the one you intended to pay, and whether the amount and transaction details are correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn a business setting, an invoice that passes the portal checks may still need to be reconciled with the purchase order, delivery or service evidence, and payment records. Those materials help you assess whether the transaction described on the invoice corresponds to what your business arranged and received. The GST Portal and IRP checks answer narrower questions about identity and reported invoice data; they do not replace that underlying review or settle a tax-credit question.
Likewise, do not assume that a failure to find a record automatically explains what happened. It could reflect a mistaken number or search input, an applicability issue, or a document discrepancy that needs the supplier’s explanation. Keep the distinction between what you observed and what you conclude: record the search result and mismatch, then investigate before treating it as proof of a particular kind of misconduct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if something does not match
- Pause payment, posting, or credit processing where appropriate. A mismatch deserves clarification before you rely on the document. Preserve the original invoice and any portal or IRP result you obtained.
- Contact the supplier independently. Use a phone number, email address, or other channel you already know to be genuine, or obtain contact information independently. Do not rely only on details printed on the questionable invoice.
- Ask for a specific correction or explanation. Identify the field that differs—such as the GSTIN, legal name, buyer details, invoice number, value, date, QR result, or IRN—and request a corrected document or an explanation that can be checked.
- Re-run the relevant check on any replacement. If the supplier sends a new invoice or e-invoice, compare that version with the official taxpayer profile and, where applicable, the IRP record. Keep the versions and results clearly distinguished.
- Escalate based on the issue. Suspected fraud, tax treatment, and input tax credit questions may require different official or professional channels. There is no single complaint route established for every situation; use the appropriate official authority or qualified tax professional for the specific issue.
When you contact the supplier, be precise and neutral. For example, state that the GSTIN search returned a different legal name, or that the verified QR details show a different invoice value, and ask the supplier to confirm the correct document. This makes it easier to distinguish an explainable naming or clerical difference from a discrepancy that remains unresolved. Keep the reply and any replacement document with the original rather than overwriting or discarding the first version.
If a replacement is supplied, verify the replacement itself. Do not assume that a corrected PDF, printed copy, QR code, or signed JSON automatically fixes the earlier inconsistency. Compare the new document with the taxpayer profile and, if e-invoicing applies, with the relevant IRP record. If the mismatch remains or the explanation does not resolve your concern, seek guidance through an appropriate official or qualified professional channel.
Keep a simple verification record
For each invoice you need to substantiate, retain the document you received and enough information to reconstruct your checks. A useful record includes the invoice version and date received, GSTIN search result details, IRN or QR verification result where applicable, the date you checked, any mismatch correspondence, and any corrected invoice. Store the retrieved portal record or verification result in a form you can later find alongside the invoice.

This record is about what the official facility showed when you checked. It should not be described as proof that a transaction occurred or that a tax position is correct. If you are resolving a dispute, the invoice, delivery or service evidence, payment record, and correspondence may all matter in addition to the verification output.
Keep the record version-specific. If you receive an original invoice, a correction, and a later e-invoice file, label or store each so that it is clear which copy was checked and which result belongs to it. A screenshot or saved note is most useful when it identifies the invoice and the date of the lookup, rather than merely showing a generic success page. Retain only details relevant to your business or personal records and store them where you can retrieve them if a question arises later.
Quick decision guide
- GSTIN search returns no taxpayer profile: pause and verify the number and supplier identity independently before relying on the invoice.
- GSTIN profile exists, but the business details do not fit: check legal and trade names and the address against your known supplier; ask for clarification through an independent contact channel.
- No IRN or QR code appears: first establish whether e-invoicing applied to that supplier and document under current rules. Absence alone does not prove fraud.
- QR verification or IRN search returns details that differ: preserve the result and invoice, stop relying on the document until the discrepancy is explained, and verify any corrected record.
- All identity and e-invoice fields match: retain the check as evidence of matching registration and reported invoice details, then assess the actual supply and any tax or credit question separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check a GST invoice?
Search the supplier’s GSTIN or UIN in the GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer function and compare the returned legal or trade name and registration details with the invoice and the supplier you know. If e-invoicing applies to that supplier and document, verify the signed QR code or search the IRN, then compare the returned invoice details with your copy.
How do I verify a GSTIN?
Use Search Taxpayer on the GST Portal and enter the GSTIN or UIN printed on the invoice. Compare the displayed legal name, trade name where shown, effective registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business, and cancellation information where applicable. A matching profile supports the registration identity, but does not authenticate a particular invoice.
How do I verify an e-invoice QR code?
Use an IRP QR verification facility or an authorised interoperable verification app, rather than relying on a generic scanner’s text display. Check the returned signed details against the invoice, including supplier and buyer GSTINs, invoice number, generation date, value, HSN code, and IRN. A successful verification does not prove that the supply occurred.
Does every GST invoice need an IRN?
No. E-invoicing applies to specified taxpayers and transactions, and its rules have changed. Check current GST notifications or ask a qualified tax professional about the supplier and document in question. A missing IRN by itself is not proof of fraud unless e-invoicing was required.
What if the GSTIN is valid but the QR or IRN details do not match?
Treat these as separate results: the GSTIN lookup concerns registration identity, while QR or IRN verification concerns the e-invoice record. Preserve both results, pause relying on the mismatched document, and ask the supplier through a contact channel you already trust. Verify any corrected document independently.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does a verified GST invoice guarantee input tax credit?
No. GST Portal and IRP checks can support that registration details or reported e-invoice data match, but they do not prove the supply occurred, confirm the tax rate is correct, or establish input tax credit eligibility. Those questions depend on the applicable rules and circumstances.
The Bottom Line
Check the supplier’s GSTIN on the GST Portal first. If e-invoicing applies, verify the signed QR code or search the IRN and compare the returned record field by field. A match supports the identity and e-invoice details shown by those official facilities; it does not by itself prove that the supply occurred, the tax treatment is correct, or input tax credit is available.
