Can You Buy Amazon Unclaimed Packages? What’s Real—and How to Avoid Scams

Amazon has a real wholesale route for eligible returned and excess FBA inventory—but that is not a public program selling random “unclaimed packages” to anyone. Learn how to spot misleading offers and verify a seller safely.

Amazon does not have an established public program where anyone can buy random “unclaimed packages.” Its real FBA liquidation process is a seller-side wholesale channel for eligible excess and returned inventory—very different from the mystery-package offers widely promoted in ads.

No—there is no established Amazon program that lets anyone buy random “unclaimed Amazon packages” directly from Amazon. Amazon does have a documented route for eligible excess and customer-returned Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) inventory to go to contracted wholesale liquidators. That is a seller inventory-recovery service, not a public mystery-package shop, a guaranteed bargain, or proof that a social-media ad is legitimate.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The distinction matters because “unclaimed Amazon packages” is commonly used as a hook for cheap-looking offers, especially in ads and unsolicited delivery messages. Some such promotions have been verified as inauthentic. Treat a particular offer as unverified unless you can independently confirm both the seller and where its inventory came from.

What Amazon’s liquidation program actually is

Amazon’s FBA Liquidations option is for sellers with eligible excess or customer-returned FBA inventory. Instead of having qualifying inventory returned, disposed of, or kept in storage, a seller may choose to have it sent through Amazon’s contracted wholesale-liquidator channel.

Amazon has described the program as an inventory-recovery option, with a typical estimated gross recovery of roughly 5% to 10% of average selling price before applicable fees. That is useful context: liquidation is a way to recover a portion of value from inventory, not evidence that sealed boxes contain high-value products or that shoppers can reliably profit from them.

Amazon also describes resale, liquidation, and donation as possible outcomes for returns. Those are disposition methods for inventory. They do not mean every undelivered, returned, or allegedly “unclaimed” customer order automatically becomes a publicly available package.

What this does support

  • Amazon-related excess and returned FBA inventory can enter a wholesale-liquidation supply chain.
  • A downstream business may sell liquidation merchandise it lawfully acquired.
  • Inventory condition, completeness, brand mix, and origin can vary materially by lot and seller.

What this does not support

  • That Amazon sells random unclaimed packages directly to the general public.
  • That an ad offering a cheap “Amazon mystery box” is official.
  • That a package is unopened, valuable, authentic, complete, or resellable.
  • That a reseller’s claim about inventory source has been verified by Amazon.

Why “unclaimed package” offers are risky

The phrase sounds plausible because returns, delivery failures, and liquidation all exist. But it blends separate processes into a story that can be hard to check. A fact check of a promotion claiming to offer “unclaimed” electronics for £2 found that the linked site was not an Amazon website and that the offer was not genuine.

That example does not prove every liquidation reseller is fraudulent. It does show why the wording alone is not evidence. A polished logo, product photos, countdown timer, or claim of limited leftover stock can all be copied. The important question is not whether the story sounds familiar; it is whether you can verify the business, the terms, and the inventory source without relying on the ad itself.

How to check an offer before you pay

  1. Leave the ad and find the company independently. Type Amazon’s address yourself or use a trusted bookmark. Do not treat an ad’s landing page, shortened link, or social profile as proof of affiliation.
  2. Check the domain carefully. An official-looking name in a URL is not enough. Look for misspellings, extra words, unusual country-code domains, or a domain unrelated to the company named in the offer.
  3. Look for a real seller identity. A legitimate business should provide a legal business name, working contact details, return policy, terms, and a clear description of what you are buying. Vague claims such as “unclaimed stock” are not a substitute for documentation.
  4. Ask what is actually being sold. Is it customer returns, shelf pulls, excess inventory, salvage, or a mixed lot? Is it manifested or unmanifested? Are items tested? Are accessories missing? Is the price for the item, a lot, a bid, or merely shipping?
  5. Read the financial terms before checkout. Check shipping, buyer’s premiums, taxes, condition disclaimers, return rights, payment method, and dispute process. A low advertised price can conceal recurring charges or nonrefundable fees.
  6. Use an account check rather than an email or text link. Amazon says its Message Center can show authentic communications it has sent. If an unexpected message claims to concern an Amazon order, refund, delivery, or account issue, sign in through Amazon independently and check there.
  7. Do not enter credentials or payment details through a surprise message. The FTC advises consumers not to click links in unexpected package-related texts. If a notice could be genuine, contact the company through a website or phone number you already know is real—not through the message.

Red flags that should stop the purchase

  • A claim that Amazon is clearing “unclaimed packages” for pennies but no official Amazon page confirms it.
  • Pressure tactics: a countdown, “only a few boxes left,” or a demand to pay immediately.
  • No business address, no meaningful customer support, or policies copied from another company.
  • Payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, bank transfer, person-to-person payment, or any method with little practical buyer protection.
  • A request for your Amazon password, one-time verification code, or unnecessary identity details.
  • Claims that you will receive specific premium goods while the terms say the merchandise is assorted, untested, final sale, or subject to substitution.
  • Only reviews hosted on the seller’s own site, especially if they are repetitive or cannot be independently corroborated.

“Unmanifested” lots are especially easy to misunderstand

Some liquidation sellers market unmanifested pallets or boxes, meaning buyers are not given an item-by-item inventory list. That may be a real sales format, but it removes the basis for estimating what you are receiving. It is not a shortcut to hidden treasure.

Even when a lot legitimately contains returned goods, returns may be opened, damaged, incomplete, locked to an account, recalled, counterfeit, unsellable, or worth less than the shipping and handling needed to recover them. Photos of pristine retail products do not establish the condition of the specific lot you will receive.

If a seller cannot clearly explain the lot’s condition category, source documentation, total cost, and final-sale terms, the prudent answer is to pass.

USPS auctions are a separate process

USPS is often folded into the same online story, but it operates differently. The USPS Mail Recovery Center handles mail that is undeliverable and non-returnable. USPS says it scans—and, when appropriate, opens—valuable mailpieces to try to identify an address for forwarding or return. Items may occasionally be auctioned only after that recovery process.

USPS Postal Explorer similarly describes efforts to identify a sender or addressee for “dead” parcels. This is a postal-mail process; it is not an Amazon consumer-liquidation policy. A carrier auction, a reseller’s reference to undeliverable mail, or an item that once passed through USPS does not establish that Amazon is selling public “unclaimed packages.”

If you already paid or shared information

  1. Contact the payment provider promptly. Ask what fraud or dispute options apply to the transaction. Keep confirmation emails, screenshots, the ad, the website address, and any messages.
  2. Secure the affected account. If you entered an Amazon password or reused password, change it through the official site. Review account activity and enable stronger sign-in protection where available.
  3. Watch payment accounts. Review card and bank activity for unauthorized charges, including small test charges or recurring charges.
  4. Report the impersonation. Amazon provides reporting routes for suspicious communications, and U.S. consumers can report fraud to the Federal Trade Commission.

A practical rule for bargain hunters

It is reasonable to say that Amazon-related inventory can be liquidated through wholesale channels. It is not reasonable to assume that any cheap “unclaimed Amazon package” offer is an official Amazon opportunity.

Before spending money, separate the source claim from the actual transaction: verify the seller independently, understand the condition and fees, and use a payment method with meaningful buyer protection. If the offer depends on urgency, secrecy, or a promise of valuable unknown contents, the uncertainty is part of what you are buying—and it may be the entire business model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Amazon officially sell unclaimed packages to the public?

Amazon documents liquidation for eligible excess and customer-returned FBA inventory through contracted wholesale liquidators. That is a seller inventory-recovery process, not a documented direct-to-consumer marketplace for random unclaimed packages.

Are Amazon liquidation pallets legitimate?

Not from the phrase alone. A lawful reseller may sell inventory obtained through a liquidation channel, but its claim of Amazon origin, the lot’s condition, and its terms still need independent verification.

Are USPS mail auctions the same as Amazon unclaimed-package sales?

No. USPS Mail Recovery Center activity concerns undeliverable and non-returnable mail after efforts to identify a sender or addressee. It is separate from Amazon’s FBA liquidation process.

What should I do with an unexpected delivery, refund, or order message?

Do not use links or phone numbers in the message. Go to the company’s official website yourself; for Amazon-related communications, check the Amazon Message Center after signing in independently.

The Bottom Line

Amazon-related liquidation is real at the seller-and-wholesaler level. A public Amazon program for anyone to buy random unclaimed packages is not established, so verify any offer independently before paying.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
