That explains why two customers’ products, directions, fragrance choices, and experiences may differ. It does not independently establish that every formula is better than a conventional shampoo, or that a formula will address a particular scalp or hair concern.
Prose also says it can alter formulas in response to customer feedback and seasonality. That can be valuable for someone whose routine changes across humid, dry, hot, or cold months—but it also means a single bottle is not necessarily a permanent answer to “what is my Prose formula?”
Why this cannot honestly be a first-person month-long review
A credible four-week haircare review needs more than a calendar claim. How to evaluate whether the customization is meaningful
Personalization is not a result by itself. A useful test asks whether the service captured the concerns you actually stated and whether the delivered formula and instructions appear aligned with them. For example, note whether the consultation asked about color processing, oiliness at the roots, dryness through the lengths, fragrance sensitivity, water hardness, climate, and wash frequency; then preserve the resulting formula details and directions.
Over roughly four weeks, compare the shampoo with your usual routine using the same wash frequency where possible. Record observable effects rather than broad promises: scalp comfort, oiliness between washes, rinse feel, tangling, softness, frizz, definition, volume, manageability, dryness, and visible residue or buildup. If you change the formula, record what changed and why.

A fair conclusion sounds like: “This formula fit my [specific hair profile] under my [specific routine], but one month and one formula cannot show what Prose will do for everyone.” It should not turn a lower amount of hair seen in the shower drain into a claim about regrowth or treatment success.
What the strength and breakage claim actually supports
Prose says its Custom Shampoo and Conditioner increased hair strength and reduced breakage in an instrumental test against a non-conditioning shampoo. The important qualifier is in the company’s own footnote: the comparison is for the shampoo-and-conditioner pairing versus a non-conditioning shampoo—not proof that shampoo alone prevents breakage for every user, and not evidence that it regrows hair. That distinction matters. In the United States, shampoo is generally a cosmetic when it is marketed to cleanse or improve appearance. Claims to restore hair growth or treat disease can make a product subject to drug requirements; cosmetics and their claims are not FDA pre-approved in the way prescription drugs are. Do not judge Prose solely by the price of one bottle. The financial decision is the delivered cost of the routine over time:

Then divide that total by the number of washes the bottle actually lasts you. A person with long, dense hair washing frequently may use a bottle at a very different rate from someone with short hair who washes twice weekly. - Probably not a fit: You need a fixed, off-the-shelf ingredient list before buying, want the cheapest possible per-wash option, or do not want any subscription decision at checkout.
- Not the right tool: You want a shampoo to diagnose or treat medical hair loss, sudden shedding, pain, burning, sores, rash, or persistent scalp irritation.

Stop using a product if you develop marked irritation, burning, rash, sores, or scalp pain. Sudden or persistent shedding should not be self-diagnosed through a shampoo review: hair loss has many possible causes, and the American Academy of Dermatology recommends a board-certified dermatologist to identify the cause.
