Here is exactly how to use it, when an installed version is legitimately available, and what Windows 10’s end of support means now.
You can legally use Word, Excel and PowerPoint on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC for free—but the free option is the browser-based version, not the full Windows desktop software. Sign in with a free Microsoft account at Microsoft365.com, then open the app launcher and choose Word, Excel or PowerPoint. If you see a Free badge, that account has the web apps but no paid desktop-app entitlement.

Do not download “free Office” installers, activators, cracks or product keys from third-party sites. A legitimate desktop installation is available only if you already have a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription, a one-time Office license, or an eligible work/school license. That distinction saves both money and trouble: the web apps are free; the installable apps are licensed software.
What you get for free
Microsoft’s free offering includes the web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. Files are designed to be saved online in OneDrive, and a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage—not 1 TB. There is no technical support with the free plan. How to use free Microsoft Office in a browser
- Open www.microsoft365.com or Microsoft’s free Office for the web page.
- Select Sign in.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account. If you do not have one, create one using a new or existing email address.
- Select the app launcher.
- Select Word, Excel or PowerPoint, then create or open a file.
Your work saves through OneDrive. Office for the web is cloud-oriented: files in OneDrive, team sites and Outlook on the web attachments can be opened through an internet connection. Microsoft’s Office for the web guide explains those storage locations and browser workflow.
When the free web apps are the right answer
- You need occasional document, spreadsheet or slide editing on a home PC.
- You want to open common Office files without paying for a desktop subscription.
- You collaborate with people using OneDrive or Microsoft 365.
- You are using an older or managed computer on which desktop software cannot be installed.
For important work, make sure the 5 GB allowance is sufficient and keep a copy of essential files in a location you control. The web apps are a legitimate replacement for many everyday tasks, but they are not a promise of every desktop feature or an offline-first workflow.
How to install the desktop apps legally—only if your account is entitled
A Microsoft 365 Personal subscription covers one person. Microsoft 365 Family covers the purchaser and up to five additional people. Both include installable desktop apps. A work or school account can also qualify, but only if the organization assigned a license that includes desktop apps and permits installation. Microsoft distinguishes these desktop benefits from the free web plan.

- Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Sign in with the exact Microsoft account associated with the subscription or Office purchase. For work or school, use the organization account.
- Select Install apps.
- Choose Microsoft 365 apps, then choose Install. Depending on the page version, the button may be labelled Install apps.
- Open the downloaded installer: choose Run in Edge, Setup in Chrome, or Save File in Firefox. At the Windows User Account Control prompt, select Yes.
- Wait for the message “You’re all set! Office is installed now”, then select Close.
- Open Start, search for Word (or another Office app), open it and accept the license agreement to complete activation.
For work/school accounts, Install apps may instead be reached by choosing Apps in the left navigation and then Install apps. These are Microsoft’s current installation steps. See Microsoft’s PC/Mac installation guidance for the supported workflow.
If you bought a product key
Redeem a retail key once at microsoft365.com/setup. Sign in or create a Microsoft account, enter the key and finish the prompts. The key must be linked to that account before the normal installation path will recognize the license. Keep the account details securely recorded; the account association matters after a PC replacement or reinstall.
Before you try to install: avoid the three most common dead ends

Microsoft installs 64-bit Office by default unless it detects existing 32-bit Microsoft 365/Office or a 32-bit standalone app such as Project or Visio. Changing between 32-bit and 64-bit requires uninstalling Microsoft 365 and the applicable standalone apps first, so do not switch architectures casually. Windows 10 and Windows 11: what changed after 2025
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC can still run, and Office may still open, but Microsoft no longer provides normal Windows security updates, software updates or technical support for the operating system. That makes an unsupported Windows 10 installation a security decision, not merely an Office decision. Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle guidance also says that an eligible Windows 10 PC can upgrade to Windows 11 for free if it meets the hardware requirements.

Microsoft 365 desktop apps are not abruptly disabled on Windows 10. Microsoft says they may continue to work and will receive security updates on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028. During that bridge period, however, Microsoft does not provide new features or normal support for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10, and the operating system itself remains unsupported. Moving to Windows 11 is the supported target and the safer long-term choice. Microsoft’s Office/Windows end-of-support policy has the detailed exceptions.
If you depend on OneDrive sync, note the narrower version condition: the OneDrive desktop app receives updates on Windows 10 version 22H2 through October 10, 2028. On older Windows 10 versions, desktop-app updates stop after August 15, 2026, although the app may keep functioning.
One-time-purchase Office versions
Office 2016 and Office 2019 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Office 2021 support ends on October 13, 2026, while Office 2024 support ends on October 9, 2029. Office 2021 and Office 2024 may run on Windows 10, but problems caused by the unsupported operating system may not be supported; Windows 11 is the supported destination. Microsoft 365 Apps installed from the Microsoft Store are being retired as an installation type. New feature updates stopped in October 2025, and security updates end in December 2026. The current path is Click-to-Run.

- Open Word or Excel.
- Select File > Account. Some versions show File > Office Account.
- Under Product Information, locate About.
- Look for the installation type. It will say either Click-to-Run or Microsoft Store, alongside a version and build number.
If it says Microsoft Store, save open documents and close all Office apps before changing it. Microsoft’s installer can remove the Store installation and reinstall the Click-to-Run version automatically. Microsoft’s Store-to-Click-to-Run migration page explains the process.

- “The full Windows Office desktop suite is free.” Not for a normal free Microsoft account. Free access is to the web apps; desktop installation requires a qualifying license.
- “Office stopped working when Windows 10 support ended.” No. Microsoft 365 apps may continue to run and receive the stated security-update bridge through October 10, 2028, but Windows 10 itself is unsupported.
- “The Microsoft Store install is the current standard.” No. It is being retired; feature updates already stopped and security updates end in December 2026.
- “Word Mobile, Excel Mobile and PowerPoint Mobile are free Windows Store alternatives.” Those Windows UWP apps are no longer available for download, and support ended October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s retirement notice confirms this.
- “Microsoft 365 works indefinitely without internet.” Desktop apps need to connect at least once every 39 days. Otherwise they can enter reduced-functionality mode and show Unlicensed Product; reconnecting and signing in restores activation.
A practical, low-cost decision
Start with the free browser apps if your work is ordinary documents, budgets, school assignments or slides and you have reliable internet. Pay only when you need the installed desktop applications, larger OneDrive storage, offline-heavy work or features unavailable in the web version. Before buying anything, check whether an employer, school or family Microsoft 365 plan already gives you a legitimate entitlement. For a Windows 10 PC, factor in the operating system’s unsupported status: an eligible no-cost upgrade to Windows 11 may be more important than trying to extend the life of an old Office installation.

Will Microsoft Office still work on Windows 10?
The apps may continue to run. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 security updates on Windows 10 continue through October 10, 2028, but Windows 10 itself has been unsupported since October 14, 2025 and Microsoft does not provide new Microsoft 365 features or normal support there.
How do I tell whether my Office installation came from the Microsoft Store?
Open Word or Excel and go to File > Account (or File > Office Account). Under Product Information, use About to see whether the installation says Click-to-Run or Microsoft Store. Microsoft Store installations are being retired; their security updates end in December 2026.
The Bottom Line
