Watt2Trade CEO Carlos Aurelio Hernandez says his platform aims to make energy positions trackable and tradable using blockchain—but the interview and company materials describe a platform and virtual kilowatts, not independently verified delivery of electricity to token holders. The crucial question for a buyer is what a token legally represents and how it connects to metered supply and settlement in a particular market.
What did Carlos Hernandez say Watt2Trade is trying to do?
In an interview published by HackerNoon on August 28, 2025, Adewale Opeyemi spoke with Watt2Trade CEO Carlos Aurelio Hernandez González about combining energy markets with blockchain and tokenization. Hernandez’s argument is that digital tokens could make energy positions easier to track, divide, price, and trade. He also presents peer-to-peer models as a possible way for energy producers to monetize surplus and for buyers to access energy claims. These are the CEO’s descriptions of the platform’s aims, not independently established market outcomes. Read the HackerNoon interview.

Hernandez says blockchain would add a layer for pricing, access, and trading rather than replace the physical electricity grid. That distinction matters: recording or transferring a token is not, by itself, the same as generating electricity, delivering it through a grid, or establishing a holder’s right to consume it.
What does a kilowatt token actually represent?
Hernandez distinguishes between two token layers in Watt2Trade’s model. He describes $Wattoin as an ecosystem participation and incentives token connected to fees, governance, and rewards. The watt-based tokens, by contrast, are described as instruments for energy trades, with price, volume, and timestamp information and a connection to electricity supply events and real-world data.

If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
| Token layer | How Watt2Trade’s CEO describes it | What the description does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| $Wattoin | Participation and incentives, including links to fees, governance, and rewards. | That holding it gives a person ownership of electricity or a right to receive it. |
| Watt-based tokens | Energy-trading instruments associated with price, volume, timestamps, and supply events. | How a specific token maps to metered electricity, settlement, delivery, or enforceable holder rights. |
Watt2Trade’s public website describes a blockchain electricity-trading platform with wallet connection, markets, and a trial or simulated trading environment. Its guide book refers to trading virtual kilowatts and assigns Wattoin utility and governance functions. Those are company descriptions of its product; they do not independently verify physical electricity delivery or audited settlement.
Hernandez summarized the intended relationship this way: “The idea is simple: the Wattoin supports the marketplace in a fun, accessible way for anyone, while still being tied to measurable energy that can be consumed, traded, or monetized.” This is his account of the design, not independent validation that a token is backed by electricity available to its holder.

Why are regular users skeptical of tokenized electricity?
The skepticism is reasonable because the word “token” can describe a digital record without answering the practical questions a buyer needs answered. A token may refer to a platform feature, a simulated position, a contractual claim, or a claim linked to actual energy. Those are materially different things.
For Watt2Trade, the public material reviewed explains the platform concept and virtual-kilowatt trading, but does not independently demonstrate the chain from a token to a named meter, measured quantity, settlement process, and holder remedy if the promised supply is unavailable. Without that chain, a user should not assume that owning a token means electricity will be delivered to their home or business.

Can decentralized alternatives scale without affecting reliability?
Hernandez’s answer is that blockchain is intended to sit alongside the grid, not replace it. That framing avoids treating a ledger as a substitute for the infrastructure that balances and delivers electricity. But it does not establish that a particular decentralized trading model can scale, preserve reliability, or operate under the rules of a particular electricity market.
Those conclusions depend on market-specific arrangements: how supply is measured, who settles transactions, how the grid operator’s requirements are met, and what rights a token holder can enforce. The interview and Watt2Trade’s public pages do not provide independent evidence resolving those operational details. Treat scalability and reliability benefits as the CEO’s thesis, not a demonstrated result.

What do Watt2Trade’s legal disclosures say?
Watt2Trade’s privacy policy describes the organization as a Marshall Islands DAO LLC and says its tokens and energy credits are functional, not ownership or profit-sharing interests. That is the company’s own legal disclosure. It is not a universal legal conclusion about tokens, nor does it determine how an instrument would be treated in every jurisdiction or what rights a particular holder has under applicable terms.

Before treating an energy token as an investment, a tradable claim, or a route to electricity, ask for specific documentation rather than relying on the token name or a general claim of energy backing:
- Quantity and measurement: What unit does the token represent, and what meter or other measurement record supports that quantity?
- Settlement: Who confirms the energy event, when is the transaction settled, and what happens if the expected supply is not available?
- Holder rights: Do the governing terms grant a right to consume, redeem, transfer, or monetize energy, or is the token only a platform instrument?
- Market and location: In which market and jurisdiction does the arrangement operate, and can a user in their location participate?
- Platform status: Is a market live or simulated, and what independent audit or operational evidence supports any claim of delivery?
These questions separate an engaging platform concept from a verifiable energy claim. The available interview, site, guide, and privacy policy do not independently establish metered delivery, audited settlement, or the legal treatment of Watt2Trade tokens across jurisdictions.
