Mastercard says its updated contactless-card specifications are designed to protect against attacks by both conventional and quantum computers. But the company’s October 2022 announcement describes an issuer-facing technology update—not a new retail card you can order—and does not disclose enough technical or independent test evidence to establish how much safer a particular card is.
What Mastercard announced
On October 10, 2022, Mastercard announced approval of the first cards for issuers compatible with updated EMVCo contactless specifications. The specifications were designed to improve protection against attacks from traditional and quantum computers. Mastercard said it had introduced quantum-resistant Enhanced Contactless specifications in January 2021 and then worked with EMVCo to develop the work into an industry standard. Mastercard’s announcement is the source for those claims.
This is not a named consumer card product. Mastercard said issuers could obtain compatible cards from manufacturers Giesecke+Devrient and Thales, and that transition timing would be worked out with customers from 2023 onward. It also said the cards were designed to work with existing acceptance, network and issuer infrastructure. The announcement does not say that every issuer adopted the specifications or that consumers can select a card based on a quantum-security feature.
How strong is the “safer” claim?
The claim is best understood as a design goal, not a demonstrated security result. Mastercard said the specifications were designed to protect against quantum attacks, but its announcement does not identify the card’s cryptographic algorithms or implementation, report laboratory or field tests, quantify any improvement over existing cards, or provide card-specific independent certification.

That distinction matters: without implementation details and evidence, a reader cannot compare the card’s resistance to attacks or conclude that it is “quantum-proof.” Mastercard’s announcement supports the narrower statement that the design was intended to address future quantum threats.
What quantum-safe work does—and does not—tell us about the card
Mastercard has described broader research into securing financial technology against quantum threats. In a March 2024 account, the company said it launched its Quantum Security and Communications project in 2021. It described cloud-based testing of post-quantum cryptography (PQC), investigation of whether existing hardware could support PQC through software updates, and modeling of quantum key distribution (QKD) architecture. Those are company-reported network research activities; they do not establish which cryptography, if any, is implemented in the 2022 payment cards.

Mastercard’s October 2025 quantum security migration white paper page and its white paper describe the timing of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer as uncertain and recommend that financial institutions prepare to migrate from classical cryptography. The materials distinguish PQC from QKD; they are guidance about the broader transition, not card-specific implementation evidence.
NIST says three finalized PQC standards are ready to implement and advises organizations to identify vulnerable algorithms and plan updates or replacements. Its post-quantum cryptography project page provides that standards context. It does not show that a Mastercard card uses any particular NIST algorithm.

What consumers can verify
The available announcement does not name retail card models or provide details that let consumers shop for a “quantum-protected” Mastercard. For a concrete product claim, the useful evidence would include:
- Specification or design claim: what protection the card is intended to provide. Mastercard’s announcement addresses this point.
- Cryptographic implementation: the algorithms and how they are used in the card. The announcement does not disclose these details.
- Independent testing or certification: evidence that a card’s implementation has been assessed. The announcement does not provide card-specific evidence of this kind.
- Issuer availability: confirmation that a named card from a particular issuer actually uses the specification. The announcement names manufacturers supplying issuers, but not consumer card models or broad issuer adoption.
Mastercard’s Ajay Bhalla, then president of Cyber & Intelligence, said the company was “taking steps to future-proof security and privacy protection as much as possible.” That is an attributed statement of intent, not an independent evaluation. In its 2024 account, Mastercard also quoted George Maddaloni, who led its approach to preparing the network for quantum threats: “We can’t say exactly how secure these algorithms are, because there aren’t widely available quantum computers to test them with.”
