Chase can generally close a U.S. checking account without the customer’s permission, but that general authority does not prove that any particular closure was justified or handled lawfully. The reason, notice requirements and treatment of any remaining balance can depend on the account agreement, state law and the facts of the case. Chase says it does not close accounts for political or religious reasons and closes accounts that create legal or regulatory risk; that is the bank’s stated position, not an independent finding about every closure.
What is known about Chase closing accounts?
The allegation that Chase closes accounts “without a valid reason” cannot be established as a universal fact from the available public evidence. A customer’s closure notice, account type, agreement, timeline and state are needed to assess an individual case.
Chase’s January 22, 2026 statement said: “Our company does not close accounts for political or religious reasons. We do close accounts because they create legal or regulatory risk for the company.” JPMorgan Chase presented this as its position in response to President Trump’s lawsuit; it is not a regulator’s finding about every closure. Read Chase’s statement.
Can a bank close your checking account without permission?
Generally, yes. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says a bank or credit union can close a checking account without the customer’s permission. It gives examples including bad checks, insufficient funds to cover fees and an account that has been dormant for a substantial period—generally years. These examples describe possible reasons in general; they do not explain why Chase closed a specific customer’s account.

The CFPB notes that some states may require advance notice. The applicable account agreement and state rules may also matter, so the general rule alone does not establish whether a particular closure complied with legal or contractual requirements. The CFPB’s answer was last reviewed August 30, 2024, and modified September 4, 2024. See the CFPB’s explanation of bank-initiated account closures.
What has the CFPB found about Chase’s checking-account screening practices?
A separate CFPB action addressed information Chase supplied for checking-account screening reports—not a blanket finding that Chase closed accounts without valid reasons. The CFPB said Chase lacked proper processes for information it provided to screening companies and did not adequately inform consumers about reporting disputes and key aspects of checking-account application denials. The agency reported a $4.6 million penalty and required policy changes. That figure is the penalty described in the CFPB action, not consumer compensation or a finding about the reason for any particular closure.

Screening reports can matter when someone applies for another checking account. The CFPB action is relevant background on how Chase handled screening information, but it should not be treated as proof that a particular account closure was unjustified. Read the CFPB’s Chase action summary.
What should you do if Chase closed your account?
- Keep the paperwork. Save the closure notice, account agreement and recent statements. Note when the account was restricted or closed and what reason, if any, Chase gave.
- Contact Chase about the practical details. Ask what information it can disclose, how and when any remaining funds will be returned, and how pending deposits, payments or transactions will be handled. Keep records of your conversations.
- Redirect money and payments. Update payroll, recurring bill payments, subscriptions and anyone sending deposits to the account. Check for pending debits and deposits so you can address missed or returned transactions.
- Check whether a later account denial relied on a report. If another bank denies your application based on a consumer report, the adverse-action notice must identify the reporting company and provides a right to a free report. Nationwide checking-account reporting companies must also provide one free report per year on request, according to the CFPB.
- Dispute inaccurate report information. Request the named report, review it and dispute errors with the reporting company. The CFPB says banks that supplied information also have obligations to investigate and correct disputed inaccuracies. Ask the institution whether there are steps you can take to qualify, and consider another bank or a lower-risk account if needed. Policies vary by institution.
The CFPB’s checking-account denial guidance explains report access, disputes and lower-risk options. Deadlines and the rules that apply to a specific closure can depend on the notice, state and circumstances. Read the CFPB’s guide to checking-account denials.

Will a closed Chase account stop you from opening another bank account?
Not necessarily. A closed account can affect a later application if negative information is reported to a checking-account screening company. The CFPB says reported information may include an unpaid negative balance after an involuntary closure, suspected fraud, bad checks or a joint account holder’s history. Banks may use reports from companies such as ChexSystems and Early Warning Services, and their screening policies differ.
If an application is denied because of a report, use the reporting company named in the adverse-action notice to obtain the report and dispute inaccurate entries. A lower-risk account or another institution may be an option; eligibility and account features vary.

What do the public court cases show—and not show?
Reneg Corp v. JPMorgan Chase
A 2025 order in Reneg Corp v. JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. recounts the plaintiff’s allegations that Chase closed an account and had not returned its remaining balance, along with Chase’s arguments in a motion to dismiss. The order is not a finding that the alleged conduct occurred, and it does not establish the case’s later disposition. Read the 2025 order.
Trump-related accounts
The Associated Press reported on February 21, 2026, that Chase acknowledged in a court filing it had informed Donald Trump and several of his businesses in February 2021 that certain private-bank and commercial-bank accounts would be closed. Trump alleges political reasons, and the bank disputes the lawsuit. This dispute is part of the public debate over account closures; it does not establish why an ordinary consumer’s account was closed. Read the Associated Press report.

How is a bank-initiated closure different from reopening an account you closed?
A separate CFPB circular addresses the opposite situation: a financial institution reopening an account after a consumer closed it. The CFPB says unilateral reopening can cause overdraft, nonsufficient-funds or maintenance fees and allow third-party access; depending on the circumstances, it may be unfair under the Consumer Financial Protection Act. That circular concerns reopening a consumer-closed account, not Chase closing an account itself. Read the CFPB circular.
