Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) announced on April 21, 2025, that it was acquiring Turpentine, the technology podcast network founded by Erik Torenberg, and that Torenberg would join the firm as a general partner. The announcement paired an acquisition with a senior appointment; the available reporting does not disclose the deal’s legal structure or financial terms.
What a16z acquired—and what “acqui-hire” means here
The company named in a16z’s announcement was Turpentine, a technology podcast network. The deal also brought its founder, Torenberg, into a general-partner role at the venture firm. Calling the transaction an “acqui-hire” is a concise way to describe those two reported developments together—not confirmation of a particular legal arrangement.
a16z’s announcement described Turpentine as a network with expertise across roles and sectors, as well as a founder social network. It did not publish a purchase price, other financial terms, or a detailed account of what assets or operations transferred. TechCrunch’s April 21, 2025 report likewise covered the acquisition and Torenberg’s appointment without supplying those terms.
What Torenberg’s role at a16z involves
At the time of the announcement, a16z cofounder Marc Andreessen said Torenberg would make investments and help lead the firm’s media and network initiatives. Andreessen framed the move as a way to expand those efforts, writing, “We’re excited to acquire Turpentine and scale our media and network efforts.” That is the firm’s stated rationale, not an independent measure of the deal’s results.

Torenberg’s current a16z profile lists him as a general partner focused on investing and the firm’s marketing and ecosystem organizations. It also lists On Deck, Turpentine, and Village Global among his previous founding work. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous account noted his background across podcasting, investing, Product Hunt, On Deck, and Village Global.
Were the Turpentine shows expected to continue?
Yes. In his April 21, 2025 announcement, Torenberg said the shows would continue and that he expected additional resources to support hosts and grow the network. That statement records his plan at the time; it does not establish that every show continued unchanged or specify show-by-show operational changes.
The current a16z Show listing includes Torenberg in recent episodes, including one dated October 3, 2026, and describes the intended audience as builders and people curious about technology. This is evidence of ongoing public-facing media activity, not proof of Turpentine’s performance or of the status of every program in its original network.

The public accounts support three distinct points: a16z reported acquiring the podcast network; Torenberg joined as a general partner with an investment and media/network remit; and the firm said it wanted to scale its media and network efforts. Those facts should not be collapsed into assumptions about the transaction’s economics or its operational outcome.

Rank #3
- Disclosed: the announcement date, the reported acquisition, Torenberg’s appointment, and the stated strategic rationale.
- Not disclosed in the announcement and contemporaneous coverage: the purchase price, other financial terms, the detailed legal structure, whether every Turpentine employee moved to a16z, or the operational fate of each show.
A June 18, 2026 a16z New Media retrospective said the initiative was one year old and that portfolio companies and other venture firms had asked how the team works and how they might build their own. It indicates that a16z continued investing in its media strategy, but does not provide a measure of Turpentine’s performance.
