In a Pi-based build, the Pi can run supporting software or act as a compact controller; an attached ASIC performs the specialized hashing. Treat the project as a way to learn about Bitcoin and mining hardware, not as an income plan.
Can a Raspberry Pi mine Bitcoin by itself?
Not in a useful, competitive sense. Bitcoin mining software prepares work, while specialized ASIC hardware searches for hashes that meet the network’s target. The Bitcoin Developer Documentation’s mining guide describes this division of labor. A Raspberry Pi’s CPU should not be confused with the ASIC doing the hashing.
So the answer depends on what you mean by “mine.” A Pi can run supporting software in a hobby setup, but a Pi alone is not a realistic Bitcoin mining device. To experiment with actual Bitcoin hashing, you need compatible ASIC hardware as well as the computer or software that manages the setup.
What does the Pi do in a Bitcoin miner?
Think of the Pi as the host or controller, and the ASIC as the hashing engine. Mining software gets block data, prepares a candidate block header and target, then sends that work to the hashing hardware. The ASIC tries nonce values and calculates hashes. If it finds a hash meeting the target, the candidate block can be submitted for broadcast.

For solo mining, software can obtain candidate work from a Bitcoin node using getblocktemplate. Pool mining instead communicates work and shares through a pool protocol. The developer guide identifies older getwork as deprecated and describes getblocktemplate or pool methods as contemporary approaches.
What hardware does a Pi-based mining project need?
A basic Raspberry Pi setup needs a power supply and boot media, such as a microSD card, according to Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guide. Those basics do not power or cool an attached ASIC board; requirements for those parts depend on the board you choose.

- 🎁 Complete Kit Included – Delivered fully assembled with EU/UK/US 5V 6A power supply, premium fan, 3D-printed stand, and OLED display.
One documented example is PiAxe, a community Raspberry Pi mining HAT based on the BitAxe Ultra 1.3 design and a BM1366 ASIC. Its documentation involves configuring Pi interfaces, including serial and I2C, and using separate ASIC board hardware. The project documents a design, but does not establish current stock, assembled-product availability, or performance.
Parts to check for an educational build
- Raspberry Pi: the host for supporting software or the project interface.
- Power supply and boot media: the Pi setup essentials identified by Raspberry Pi’s documentation.
- ASIC board: the specialized hardware that does Bitcoin hashing; check the selected board’s current documentation for Pi compatibility.
- Board-specific power and cooling: confirm the input requirements and heat-management needs for the ASIC hardware rather than assuming the Pi’s power supply is sufficient.
Solo mining or pool mining: which fits a hobby build?
The choice changes how rewards are shared and how variable the outcome is, not the role of the Pi or ASIC. The Bitcoin Developer Documentation describes these trade-offs:

- Real-Time Monitoring – Built-in 1.9" T-Display shows hashrate, temperature, power draw, and diagnostics directly on the device.
- Complete Kit Included – NerdQaxe++ miner, premium 12.4V / 10A power supply, and sturdy metal stand. Made in Europe with high-quality components.
| Approach | Reward sharing | Payout pattern | Operational dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | If successful, the miner retains the reward and fees. | Higher variance; a successful result is less predictable. | Depends on the solo miner’s node and software workflow. |
| Pool | Participants share proceeds in rough proportion to contributed hashing power. | More regular, smaller distributions than solo outcomes. | Depends on the pool’s availability and rules. |
These are structural differences, not a promise of earnings. This article does not establish current network conditions, hardware costs, electricity costs, or a return estimate, so it cannot support a profitability or payback calculation.
