There’s Something About Mary leads Cameron Diaz’s romance-centered comedies in worldwide box-office receipts, with $369.9 million reported by Box Office Watch. The available figures do not establish a reliable ten-film ranking: several possible entries are genre hybrids, and one likely candidate lacks a confirmed worldwide total in the same source. This list therefore ranks the five clear or near-clear candidates with comparable reported totals, rather than filling out a top ten with unsupported placements.

How this ranking is defined

“Rom-com” can mean a film built around a romantic relationship, or a comedy that includes romance among several plotlines. To keep the list useful, the films below are romance-centered or commonly treated as romantic comedies; The Other Woman is included with a qualification because it is an ensemble comedy with rom-com-adjacent elements. Diaz’s Shrek films are excluded: they are animated fantasy comedies, and counting them would change the scope substantially.

All figures are nominal worldwide grosses reported by Box Office Watch’s Cameron Diaz filmography, accessed in 2026. They are not inflation-adjusted. The source does not establish whether re-releases are consistently included, so these should be read as the tracker’s reported totals, not as audited studio statements.

The biggest romance-centered candidates, by reported worldwide gross

Rank Film Release year Worldwide gross Why it fits
1 There’s Something About Mary 1998 $369.9 million Comedy built around multiple suitors competing for Mary; a strong rom-com candidate.
2 My Best Friend’s Wedding 1997 $298.9 million Romantic comedy; Diaz plays Kimmy.
3 What Happens in Vegas 2008 $219.0 million Identified as a romantic comedy in the biographical reference.
4 The Holiday 2006 $205.0 million Romantic comedy, with Diaz among the ensemble leads.
5 The Other Woman 2014 $194.3 million Ensemble comedy about a wife and her husband’s mistresses; romance-adjacent rather than a straightforward rom-com.

What each film’s place in the list means

1. There’s Something About Mary — $369.9 million

The 1998 comedy is the clear leader among the comparable romance-centered candidates. Its premise—several men pursuing Mary—makes it a defensible inclusion even though its broad comedy is as prominent as its romantic plot. A biographical reference reports roughly $369 million worldwide, close to Box Office Watch’s $369.9 million figure.

2. My Best Friend’s Wedding — $298.9 million

Julia Roberts leads this 1997 romantic comedy, with Diaz playing Kimmy, the bride-to-be. Its reported worldwide gross places it well ahead of the next two titles in the comparable figures used here.

3. What Happens in Vegas — $219.0 million

This 2008 romantic comedy pairs Diaz with Ashton Kutcher as two strangers whose relationship develops after a Las Vegas wedding. The reported worldwide gross puts it just above The Holiday in this source’s figures.

4. The Holiday — $205.0 million

The 2006 romantic comedy follows two women who swap homes and find new relationships. A biographical reference reports it above $205 million worldwide; Box Office Watch lists $205.0 million, the figure used for the ranking.

5. The Other Woman — $194.3 million

This 2014 ensemble comedy is a borderline case for a strict rom-com list: its central setup is a wife and two mistresses joining forces against the same man. The Box Office Watch figure is $194.3 million, while the film’s reference page reports $196.7 million. That difference is a reminder that database and reference-page totals can vary; the consistent ranking above uses only Box Office Watch figures.

Why there is no defensible sixth-through-tenth ranking here

Box Office Watch’s page is a filmography, not a genre-filtered rom-com chart. It gives comparable worldwide figures for Diaz films such as Sex Tape ($126.1 million), What to Expect When You’re Expecting ($88.5 million), In Her Shoes ($82.2 million) and The Sweetest Thing ($63.1 million), but their genres and story focus differ. A lower gross alone does not make a film a rom-com.

The Heartbreak Kid is another possible candidate, but the available evidence does not independently establish its worldwide gross. Placing it—or any other borderline title—in a numbered top ten would imply a level of verification and a genre rule that these figures do not support. Including animation or broader comedy-drama hybrids could produce a different list, but it would answer a wider question than “rom-coms.”

How to compare the grosses fairly

  • Worldwide, not domestic: the ranking uses worldwide receipts, so it should not be compared with a domestic-only chart.
  • Nominal dollars: the totals span different release years and are not adjusted for inflation, ticket prices or changes in the size of the global theatrical market.
  • One tracker for the ranking: Box Office Watch supplies the figures used in each position; where a second source differs for The Other Woman, the discrepancy is disclosed rather than blended.
  • Genre is an editorial boundary: a filmography’s gross column cannot by itself determine whether a title is a romantic comedy.
