No. Apple Gift Cards, App Store Cards, and App Store & iTunes Gift Cards can be redeemed only in the country or region where they were purchased. Apple’s example is direct: “if you bought an Apple Gift Card in France, you can’t redeem it in the App Store in the United States.”
Check both the card’s purchase region and the country or region of the Apple storefront or account where you are trying to redeem it. Also confirm the card type: an Apple Store Gift Card is not an App Store or iTunes payment card.

Why an Apple gift card may not work in another country
Apple ties redemption to the country or region where the card was purchased. If the card and the storefront or account region do not match, Apple may show the message “Code must be redeemed in a different country or region.” Apple says that message usually means the card was bought in another country or region. Apple Support’s redemption troubleshooting guidance explains the restriction and the error.
- Purchase region: Identify the country or region where the card was sold.
- Storefront or account region: Check the region for the Apple store or account where you are attempting redemption.
- Card type: Verify whether it is an Apple Gift Card, an App Store or App Store & iTunes card, or an Apple Store Gift Card.
A mismatch in card type is separate from a mismatch in country or region; resolving one does not resolve the other.

Apple gift card types are not interchangeable
Apple Gift Cards and App Store or App Store & iTunes cards are used for Apple Account balance and eligible digital purchases. Apple Store Gift Cards are different: Apple says they cannot be redeemed in the App Store or iTunes Store. Check the card’s name and the redemption instructions printed on it before entering its code. Apple’s card troubleshooting page distinguishes these card types.
What Apple Account balance can pay for
When a supported gift card is redeemed, its funds are added to the Apple Account balance. Depending on the country or region and the purchase, that balance may be used for Apple products and accessories at apple.com, an Apple Store, or the Apple Store app, as well as eligible App Store apps and in-app purchases, media, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV, and iCloud+. Apple notes that availability varies by region; some purchases require a credit card on file, and some subscriptions may not be charged to account balance. How to troubleshoot a redemption failure
A failed redemption is not always caused by the card’s region. Apple lists other possible causes, including an invalid code, a code that has already been redeemed, or a card that was not activated by the retailer. Use the error message and card condition to decide what to check next. Apple Support describes these failure cases.
- Check the card and account regions. Compare where the card was purchased with the region of the Apple storefront or account used for redemption.
- Confirm the card is the right type. An Apple Store Gift Card cannot be redeemed in the App Store or iTunes Store.
- Check the code and activation. Make sure the code is readable and entered correctly. If the physical card was not activated, contact the retailer that sold it. If the card is damaged or the code cannot be read, contact Apple Support.
- For a regional mismatch, contact the seller. For a physical card bought in another region, Apple suggests returning to the retailer where it was purchased.
Changing your Apple Account region is not a guaranteed workaround
Apple’s guidance does not say that changing an account’s country or region makes a gift card purchased elsewhere redeemable. Changing the account region also has requirements: Apple tells users to spend any remaining balance first, cancel subscriptions that prevent the change, and wait for pending activity to clear.
