BRF announced on August 30, 2022, that Global CEO Lorival Nogueira Luz Jr. had resigned and that Miguel de Souza Gularte, then CEO of Marfrig Global Foods, would replace him. The board acted the day before. BRF planned the leadership transition to conclude by September 30, 2022.
Who replaced BRF CEO Lorival Luz?
BRF’s board appointed Miguel de Souza Gularte as Global CEO after receiving Luz’s resignation at its August 29, 2022, meeting. Gularte was then Marfrig Global Foods’ CEO; Marfrig also recorded his resignation from that role on August 29. BRF announced the changes on August 30 in a material fact filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission: BRF’s August 30, 2022 filing.
Why did BRF CEO Lorival Luz resign?
BRF’s announcement did not state why Luz resigned. The board thanked him for his commitment and dedication during his time as Global CEO, but offered no explanation for his departure. The available company account also contains no attributed spoken quotation from Luz or Gularte.
When was the CEO transition supposed to take effect?
The board’s action took place on August 29, 2022, and BRF announced it the following day. The company said Luz and Gularte would have a transition period concluding by September 30, 2022. That was the planned end of the handover, not a separate announcement about a later leadership change.

Did Gularte’s appointment mean BRF planned to merge with Marfrig?
No—not according to BRF at the time. In its August 30, 2022, filing, the company said: “The Company´s Board of Directors: (i) expressed its gratitude to Mr. Lorival Nogueira Luz Jr. for his commitment and dedication to the Company throughout the period in which he held the position of Global Chief Executive Officer; and (ii) informs that this appointment does not represent an intention, at this moment, of merger between the Company and Marfrig Global Foods S.A.” The qualification “at this moment” matters: it described the company’s position when the appointment was announced.
What happened later between BRF and Marfrig?
BRF and Marfrig later completed a share merger, closing the transaction on September 22, 2025. In a filing about the closing and the companies’ new organizational structure, Gularte was listed as Global CEO, with his officer term recorded through May 6, 2026. CADE, Brazil’s competition authority, had announced clearance on September 17, 2025. BRF shares last traded on B3 on September 22; Marfrig shares began trading as MBRF3 the following day. The merger was a later corporate development; it does not change what BRF said about the appointment in August 2022. The reviewed filings do not establish who held the relevant CEO position on October 8, 2026, so Gularte’s recorded term end should not be treated as confirmation of his current role.
