Brazil’s 2026/27 Soybean Area Seen Flat as War and Financing Risks Persist

Agroconsult’s August estimate sees Brazil’s 2026/27 soybean planted area at 49.2 million hectares, little changed year over year, while costs and credit remain risks.

Agroconsult’s latest reported estimate puts Brazil’s soybean planted area at 49.2 million hectares in 2026/27, nearly unchanged from 49.1 million hectares in 2025/26. The Iran conflict remains one source of uncertainty, but the outlook also depends on fertilizer and fuel costs, farm margins and access to credit.

What Agroconsult forecast—and when

Agroconsult’s March 2026 outlook was conditional: planted area would be broadly stable, or slightly higher in some states, if the conflict and its market effects did not persist or intensify. The firm warned that prolonged disruption combined with difficult credit conditions could lead farmers to cut investment in inputs and, eventually, acreage. Reuters reported that view on March 26, with a March 25 dateline. Read the March Reuters report republished by Successful Farming.

By August, Reuters reported a more specific Agroconsult estimate: 49.2 million hectares for 2026/27, compared with 49.1 million hectares in 2025/26. That is a marginal increase, consistent with a broadly flat-area outlook. The estimate is a projection, not a confirmed final planting result. Read the August Reuters report republished by Grainews.

Reporting point Area outlook What it means
March 25, 2026, reported by Reuters Broadly stable, with slight growth possible in some states A conditional baseline tied to conflict duration, costs and credit
August 26, 2026, reported by Reuters 49.2 million hectares in 2026/27 versus 49.1 million hectares in 2025/26 A quantified estimate showing little change

How the conflict could affect acreage

The risk described by Agroconsult runs through farm economics rather than a direct, automatic link between war and planting decisions. Conflict-related disruption can raise fertilizer and fuel costs. Higher costs put pressure on margins, while difficult credit and elevated interest rates can make it harder for farmers to finance crop inputs and other investment.

40 Soy Bean Midori Giant Edamame Heirloom Vegetable Seeds, Glycine Max
  • High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
  • Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
  • Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
  • Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
  • Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.

If those pressures last, farmers may reduce input spending; if the squeeze continues, they may also plant less area. Agroconsult chief executive Andre Pessoa described the uncertainty at the firm’s March forecast-release event: “I confess that in 30 years I’ve never seen so many loose ends to tie up,” Reuters reported.

What the later report adds about costs and financing

The August report paired its acreage estimate with projections of lower fertilizer imports and tighter financial conditions:

  • Agroconsult projected Brazilian fertilizer imports of 38.4 million metric tons in 2026, down from 43.3 million metric tons in 2025. These are the firm’s projections as reported by Reuters, not verified final import totals.
  • The report cited high fertilizer costs, high debt and high Brazilian interest rates among the pressures on the sector, alongside disruption to input flows linked to the Iran war.

Reuters also attributed a projected increase in the sector’s net debt-to-EBITDA ratio from 2.1x “this year” to 2.8x “next year” to Andre Pessoa. Because the August report used relative dates and the intended periods are not independently clarified in the cited account, those ratios should not be treated as precise calendar-year comparisons.

Keep planted area separate from crop output

Reuters reported in March that Agroconsult estimated the 2025/26 soybean crop at 184.7 million metric tons and described it as a record estimate. That figure measures expected production, not planted hectares, and is the March estimate rather than a final outcome established by the later August report. A crop can change in size for reasons beyond acreage, so it should not be substituted for the 2026/27 area projection.
