Brazilian business owners can accept contactless payments directly on a compatible iPhone using Tap to Pay on iPhone, Apple’s merchant payment feature. It requires a supported payment app and an iPhone XS or later; Apple recommends using the latest iOS. The feature launched in Brazil on September 19, 2023, and Apple’s current provider list includes Cielo, CloudWalk, Mercado Pago, Nubank, Stone, and SumUp.
What Tap to Pay on iPhone does
Tap to Pay turns a participating merchant’s iPhone into a contactless payment acceptance device. The merchant opens a supported payment app, enters the sale amount, and presents the iPhone to the customer. The customer taps a contactless credit or debit card, or a supported digital-wallet device such as an iPhone using Apple Pay or an Android phone using a wallet.
This is not a new way for iPhone owners to pay at stores: it is a way for merchants to accept customers’ contactless payments. Apple says no separate payment terminal or additional payment equipment is required for the feature. That does not mean the service is free; Apple’s feature page does not state provider fees.
What you need to accept payments
- An iPhone XS or later. Apple recommends the latest iOS; check Apple’s current Brazil requirements in case compatibility guidance changes.
- A payment provider that supports Tap to Pay in Brazil, plus its supported payment app.
- A merchant account or other provider approval required to use that app. Eligibility and onboarding are determined by the provider.
How to take a Tap to Pay transaction
- Confirm that the iPhone is an XS or later and update iOS as recommended by Apple.
- Choose a provider that offers Tap to Pay in Brazil and check its merchant eligibility, app requirements, supported card brands, limits, fees, and settlement terms.
- Install or open the provider’s payment app and enable Tap to Pay there. Apple’s merchant guidance describes enabling the feature within the supported payment app.
- Enter the amount due in the app and present the iPhone to the customer so they can tap a contactless card or supported wallet device.
The provider’s app processes the payment. Apple’s developer documentation describes the role of supported payment service providers and their certified terminal configurations; merchants do not need to perform the developer integration themselves. See Apple’s developer overview for that technical context.

Which payment providers support it in Brazil?
Apple’s current Tap to Pay country and region listing names these providers for Brazil:
- Cielo
- CloudWalk
- Mercado Pago
- Nubank
- Stone
- SumUp
Apple’s listing also marks Granito as “Coming soon,” which is not the same as currently available. The list does not mean providers offer identical features or terms. Compare eligibility and onboarding, accepted debit and credit networks, transaction limits, fees, settlement timing, refund and dispute tools, app compatibility, and support directly with each provider. Apple’s cited pages do not provide current Brazil-specific provider pricing or settlement terms.

Are all cards accepted, and are there transaction limits?
No guarantee of universal acceptance is stated. Apple’s Brazil FAQ advises merchants to ask their payment app provider which contactless card brands it supports. Apple’s 2023 launch announcement named major networks including American Express, Mastercard, and Visa, but also warned that some contactless cards may not be accepted and transaction limits may apply. Confirm the details with the provider you choose.
What Apple says about privacy
Apple says Tap to Pay transactions are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element, and that Apple does not know what is being bought or who is buying. These are Apple’s descriptions of its system, not an independent security assessment. Read Apple’s Brazil launch announcement for its stated privacy and security details.
