Ethereum’s Byzantium hard fork activated on Monday, October 16, 2017, at block 4,370,000—not Sunday. Ethereum.org records the activation at 05:22:11 UTC. Ether rose around the event in contemporary reporting, but the available figures do not show that Byzantium caused a lasting rally or that it measurably increased investor confidence.

When did the Byzantium hard fork happen?

The Ethereum Foundation announced on October 12, 2017, that Byzantium was expected to activate on Monday, October 16, at block 4,370,000, likely between 12:00 and 13:00 UTC. That was a forecast, not the final recorded time. Ethereum.org’s timeline lists activation at 05:22:11 UTC on October 16, at the target block. The protocol change was triggered by reaching that block height, so the estimate and the recorded time should not be treated as interchangeable. Ethereum Foundation announcement; Ethereum.org timeline.

The Foundation described Byzantium as the first of two planned forks in Ethereum’s Metropolis development phase; Constantinople followed later. The Foundation’s announcement defined a hard fork as “a change to the underlying Ethereum protocol, creating new rules to improve the system.” Ethereum Foundation, October 12, 2017.

What changed in Byzantium?

Byzantium combined changes to smart-contract behavior, cryptographic operations, mining economics and the network’s difficulty rules. The Ethereum Foundation’s upgrade list, also reflected in Ethereum.org’s timeline, included:

  • EIP-140, REVERT: added a way for contract execution to report an error without consuming all remaining gas.
  • EIP-658: added a success-or-failure status field to transaction receipts.
  • EIPs 196 and 197: added elliptic-curve operations.
  • EIP-198: added modular exponentiation, a cryptographic operation.
  • EIP-211: enabled variable-length return data.
  • EIP-214, STATICCALL: added a call type for executing a contract without allowing state changes.
  • EIP-100: changed the difficulty adjustment calculation.
  • EIP-649: delayed the difficulty bomb by a year and reduced the block reward from 5 ETH to 3 ETH.

Together, these changes affected the rules followed by Ethereum clients; they were not a separate application update for ordinary wallet users.

What did users and node operators need to do?

The Foundation said users of full clients needed to install updated software to follow the new rules. A client that was not updated could continue syncing under the pre-fork rules and become incompatible with the main network. Users of third-party web or mobile wallets were advised to ask their provider whether any action was needed. Ethereum Foundation announcement.

Did Ether’s price surge after Byzantium?

Contemporary CoinDesk coverage reported that ether dipped somewhat before the fork, then reached close to a monthly high of $350 immediately afterward; it was at $337 when the article was published. CoinDesk attributed the near-$350 figure to CoinMarketCap. These are short-term reported observations, not evidence of a sustained price increase. CoinDesk’s October 16, 2017 report.

Ethereum.org displays $334.23 alongside its 2017 Byzantium timeline entry, but that date-associated figure is not an intraday price series and should not be read as a measure of the move at the moment of activation. Ethereum.org timeline.

Did the fork inspire investor confidence?

That claim goes beyond what these price observations establish. A rise around the activation can be described, but the figures do not establish that the fork caused it, that investor confidence was the reason, or that any effect lasted. CoinDesk quoted Hudson Jameson, whom it identified as Byzantium’s unofficial release manager, crediting rollout stability to “the hard work (of) developers, users and miners across the ethereum ecosystem.” That remark concerns the rollout, not a demonstrated market-wide confidence measure or the cause of ether’s price movement.
