A rough natural diamond recovered at Botswana’s Karowe mine weighs 37.41 carats and has a sharply defined boundary between pink and colorless regions. The unusual split is real; “faultless” is headline language, not evidence that the crystal has no inclusions or other imperfections.
What was found at Karowe?
The stone is a rough diamond, not a finished or polished gem. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), as reported by Live Science in 2025, gives its weight as 37.41 carats and its dimensions as about 24.3 × 16 × 14.5 millimeters (approximately 1 × 0.63 × 0.57 inches).
Its pink and colorless zones meet at a distinct internal boundary. Earth.com reported that a team led by GIA’s Sally Eaton-Magaña examined the diamond in Gaborone; its coverage describes the stone as type IIa, a classification associated with very low nitrogen content. Earth.com’s account does not make the type designation proof of how the two color regions formed.
How unusual is the pink-and-colorless split?
GIA experts reportedly had examined comparable pink-and-colorless diamonds of no more than 2 carats, making this 37.41-carat rough specimen unusually large among the examples they had seen. That comparison does not establish an all-time record or a broader statistic for diamond discoveries.

Other notable Karowe finds provide scale, but they are not direct matches for this color pattern: Live Science’s 2025 report cites the 2,488-carat Motswedi rough, reported from the mine in 2024, and the 62-carat pink diamond Boitumelo. Those weights describe individual stones, not a general measure of how often unusually colored diamonds are found.
What might explain the color divide?
Pink diamond color is associated with distortion of the crystal lattice rather than a typical coloring impurity. Geological stress can permanently deform that structure, a process called plastic deformation. If deformation is more extensive, a diamond’s appearance can shift toward brown.

GIA’s proposed explanation is a likely two-stage history: the portion now pink may initially have been colorless and then undergone deformation, while the colorless portion formed later without the same deformation. Eaton-Magaña told Live Science: “The pink section likely was initially colorless and then plastically deformed, perhaps by a mountain-forming event millions of years ago, resulting in its pink color, with the colorless section forming at a later time.”
This is a scientific interpretation, not a fully established chronology for every detail of the stone’s formation. The reported type IIa classification and the sharp color boundary do not, by themselves, prove that sequence.

What is known about the diamond now?
The reported accounts establish the stone’s recovery at Karowe, its weight and dimensions, and its visible color division. They do not establish whether it has since been cut, sold, appraised, or subjected to further testing. No sale price or appraisal value for this specimen is reported, so its unusual appearance should not be mistaken for a known market value.
