That figure was an asking or expected price—not a confirmed sale result. The display has ended, and the available published sources do not establish whether the coin sold or for how much.
What the 1899 half sovereign is
The coin was struck in the year the Perth Mint opened. The Mint describes it as a “Coin of Record”: a historical piece, not a coin intended for everyday circulation. According to the Mint, Coins of Record were generally made in very small numbers to document a design or for presentation to institutions, dignitaries, or exhibitions. Some later entered the collector market, and their movement can be difficult to trace. The Perth Mint’s 2025 announcement and historical feature on Coins of Record explain the category and this coin’s place in it.
Why the coin is considered rare
The Perth Mint says its records indicate that four dies were ordered from the Royal Mint in London in 1899, but it says the coin’s production and survival remain partly mysterious. Coinworks describes the piece as a presentation coin with a specimen finish and calls it the only known half sovereign struck using the 1899 dies. That rarity claim is Coinworks’ description, not an independently verified census of surviving coins. Coinworks’ listing provides its account of the coin.
The Perth Mint’s feature identifies the following Coins of Record in the collector market: one 1899 sovereign, one 1899 half sovereign, two 1901 sovereigns, one 1901 half sovereign, and two 1931 sovereigns. This is the Mint’s stated inventory, not a comprehensive independent count of all surviving pieces.

What the AUD 600,000 figure means
The Perth Mint described the expected sale price as around AUD 600,000. Coinworks’ undated listing, captured for the 2025 offer, also stated AUD 600,000; PerthNow reported in June 2025 that the coin was valued at that amount and would be sold for roughly that figure after the exhibition. These reports document an asking or expected price in 2025, not money confirmed to have changed hands. The Mint announcement, PerthNow’s report dated 23 June 2025, and Coinworks’ listing describe the offer.
The available sources do not give a published sale date or result. It is therefore not established that the coin sold, that a buyer paid AUD 600,000, or that it remains available. The quoted figure should not be treated as a current valuation. Nor is it directly comparable with the bullion value of an ordinary half sovereign: this was a specific collectible presentation piece, and its proposed price depended on its rarity, history, and documentation.

Display dates and sale arrangement
The Perth Mint’s temporary display ran from 23 June through 13 August 2025 in the Mint foyer, daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The display has ended. Coinworks provided the coin for the exhibit and offered it privately. In the Mint’s announcement, curator Natasha Fenner called it “a rare opportunity for the public to view the earliest half sovereign made in Perth and appreciate the skills of our founding craftspeople.”
Authentication and reported provenance
Coinworks says the Royal Mint London authenticated the coin in September 1985. Its listing traces the piece from the S. V. Hagley collection in the late 1940s through Spink Auctions in November 1985 and March 1989, a Noble Numismatics private sale in 1994, a Nobles auction in March 2003, and the Madrid Collection of Australian Rare Coins in 2003. Coinworks further reports a private-treaty sale in July 2017 to a family member of the then-owner. These are details from Coinworks’ account; they are not independent proof of an unbroken chain of title.
