Boeing announced on October 11, 2024, that it planned to reduce its total workforce by roughly 10% over the coming months. The Associated Press translated that target to about 17,000 jobs. That was an approximate planned reduction—not a verified count of completed layoffs. Boeing’s later report of approximately 182,000 employees at the end of 2025 does not establish how many people left under the 2024 plan.
Why did Boeing announce a reduction of about 17,000 jobs?
In a message to employees on October 11, 2024, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said the company planned to reduce its total workforce by roughly 10% over the coming months. He cited Boeing’s financial reality, development challenges with the 777X, a pause in flight testing, and the ongoing work stoppage. Boeing’s employee message gave the percentage; the Associated Press reported the approximate equivalent of 17,000 jobs.
The 17,000 figure should therefore be read as a contemporary estimate of the announced target, not a final tally. Boeing did not describe it in the employee message as a count of people already dismissed.
Did the strike cause the layoffs?
The strike was part of the conditions Boeing was facing, but it is not accurate to say it was the sole cause of the planned workforce reduction. Ortberg’s October message also pointed to financial and program challenges. In later reporting, Ortberg said the strike did not cause the layoffs and characterized them as a response to overstaffing. AP’s report on the announcement provides that context.

The labor stoppage nevertheless had significant operational and financial effects. Boeing’s October 2024 Form 10-Q says the IAM District 751 stoppage, which began September 13, paused production of the 737, 767, 777 and 777X, as well as certain defense derivatives including the KC-46A and P-8A. Boeing said the stoppage reduced deliveries and adversely affected its financial position, results and cash flows. Its October 11 preliminary results release said the financial effects of program charges and the stoppage would be reported with third-quarter results.
When did Boeing announce the layoffs, and what happened next?
| Date | What the record says |
|---|---|
| September 13, 2024 | The IAM District 751 work stoppage began, according to Boeing’s Form 10-Q. |
| October 11, 2024 | Ortberg announced a planned reduction of roughly 10% of Boeing’s total workforce. AP rendered the target as about 17,000 jobs. Boeing’s message and AP’s report describe the announcement. |
| October 23, 2024 | Boeing’s Form 10-Q discussed the strike’s operational and financial effects and recorded the workforce announcement. |
| November 2024 | AP reported layoff notices to more than 400 members of SPEEA, the union representing some Boeing engineers and technical workers. This was a partial report, not a company-wide final count. AP’s November report. |
| December 2024 | AP reported additional cuts in Washington and California. Those reports documented implementation in locations and groups, not the final total. AP’s December report. |
| December 31, 2025 | Boeing reported approximately 182,000 employees and retrospectively described the 2024 IAM District 751 strike as lasting 53 days in its 2025 Form 10-K. |
How many Boeing workers were actually laid off?
The available figures establish that layoffs began, but they do not establish a final, directly comparable count of completed reductions under the October 2024 plan or a definitive date when it was complete. AP’s November and December reports cover particular notices, groups and locations; they are snapshots rather than a comprehensive accounting.
Rank #2
Boeing’s approximately 182,000 employees at December 31, 2025 is an overall company headcount at a later date. It is not a before-and-after count of the same workforce cohort, so it cannot by itself show how many employees departed under the plan—or whether the announced target was fully achieved. Boeing’s company employment page also displays December 2025 figures.
