Boeing’s 737 MAX Production Rate Reached 42 a Month; 47 Was the Next Target

Boeing reported a 737 production rate of 42 per month in late 2025 and began a transition toward 47 in 2026. The higher rate was not confirmed as sustained by October 8, 2026.

Boeing reported that its 737 program reached a production rate of 42 aircraft per month in the fourth quarter of 2025. By June 2026, the company said its three Renton, Washington, lines were transitioning toward 47 per month, and its SEC filing said that transition had begun with FAA concurrence. The latest dated sources available here do not confirm that Boeing had sustained a 47-per-month rate by October 8, 2026.

What production rate has Boeing reported?

The headline’s “nearly 40” figure is out of date. Boeing said the 737 program’s rate rose to 42 aircraft per month during the fourth quarter of 2025, a milestone also reported in the company’s January 2026 results release. Its 2025 annual report describes a recovery from below 38 per month at the start of 2025 to 42 during Q4. Boeing’s 2026 results release and 2025 annual report.

In June 2026, Boeing described a move from 42 to 47 per month during the summer. The company’s filing for the quarter ended June 30 said the transition began in the first half of 2026 with FAA concurrence. Those statements establish a reported 42 rate and a transition toward 47; they do not establish that Boeing had achieved and maintained 47 by October 8, 2026. Boeing’s June 2026 production update and Boeing’s June 2026 Form 10-Q.

What do “42 per month” and “47 per month” mean?

A production rate is a planned or reported pace for the program, not a promise that exactly that many aircraft will be completed or delivered in every calendar month. The rate figures are for Boeing’s 737 program overall; they do not specify output for each MAX variant, prove a uniform daily factory pace, or equal customer deliveries.

  • Reported rate: Boeing reported 42 aircraft per month in Q4 2025.
  • Transition rate: 47 per month was the company’s stated next step in June 2026, not a confirmed sustained rate in the sources dated through October 8, 2026.
  • Deliveries: A production-rate figure is not a monthly delivery count. Completed aircraft may not be delivered in the same period they are produced.

Why did the FAA restrict production increases?

After a 737-9 door-plug failure in January 2024, the FAA increased oversight of Boeing’s production and safety-management systems, including work involving Spirit AeroSystems. In its March 2025 quarterly filing, Boeing said the FAA had communicated it would not approve increases above 38 aircraft per month or additional production lines until Boeing met required quality and safety standards. Boeing said it was gradually increasing toward 38 at that time. Boeing’s March 2025 Form 10-Q.

By October 2025, Boeing said it and the FAA had jointly reviewed key performance indicators and the rate-readiness process under Boeing’s Safety Management System, supporting the move to 42. The 2025 annual report describes the recovery to 42 in Q4. This is Boeing’s account of the readiness process; it should not be confused with an independent audit of factory quality.

How does the Everett line fit into the plan?

Boeing described an Everett North Line as an expansion intended to add capacity beyond Rate 47. Its June 2026 filing said low-rate production on the new line began in July, but also stated that FAA production certification was required before the first delivery from that line. Starting low-rate production is therefore not the same as receiving authorization for customer deliveries, nor does it by itself establish the program’s achieved monthly rate.

Which FAA approvals are separate from the production rate?

Several regulatory milestones apply to different things and should not be collapsed into one “FAA approval.”

  • End-of-line airworthiness certificates: On July 20, 2026, the FAA allowed Boeing to resume issuing these certificates at the end of production for all 737 MAX and 787 aircraft, based on comparable production-quality findings. FAA inspections, audits, and monitoring continued. This change did not itself approve a higher production rate or certify the Everett line. FAA announcement, July 20, 2026.
  • MAX-7 type certification: On August 3, 2026, the FAA announced an amended type certificate and updated Production Limitation Record for the MAX-7, incorporating changes to flight-control software, flightcrew alerting, and engine anti-ice design. This milestone concerns that model’s certification, not the rate for the entire 737 program. FAA announcement, August 3, 2026.

What could affect the move to 47?

Boeing identifies certification timing, the engine anti-ice solution, supply-chain shortages, labor instability, production disruption, customer considerations, and delivery timing as risks to its program assumptions. These are disclosed risks, not evidence that each was an active bottleneck at the time of the filing. CEO Kelly Ortberg said in June 2026 that Boeing would move higher only when the production system was stable and producing a high-quality product: “We’ll move when the production system says we’re ready to move.” Boeing’s June 2026 statement; Boeing’s June 2026 Form 10-Q.
