Boeing broke ground on an expansion of its North Charleston, South Carolina, 787 site on November 7, 2025. The project is intended to add capacity for higher Dreamliner production, but the construction milestone is not the same as reaching the production target: Boeing said the site was set to produce 10 aircraft a month in 2026, while its earlier announcement expected expanded operations to come online in early 2027.
Why is Boeing expanding its South Carolina 787 plant?
Boeing says the expansion will provide infrastructure for higher 787 production in response to demand. The company reported on November 7, 2025, that 90 customers had ordered more than 2,250 787-family aircraft, deliveries had exceeded 1,200, and the backlog was near 1,000. Those are Boeing-reported figures, not independent measurements. Boeing also cited its own Commercial Market Outlook forecast that the industry will need more than 7,800 new widebody aircraft over the next two decades.
Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said the investment is meant to help the company meet customer needs in the years ahead. The expansion is a capacity plan; the announcement does not establish that demand forecasts or planned production levels have already been realized.
What is included in the expansion?
The plan centers on a second final assembly building roughly comparable in size to Boeing South Carolina’s existing approximately 1.2 million-square-foot building. Boeing also identified additional production positions, support and office space, and several specialized facilities:

The work is at Boeing’s North Charleston campuses near Charleston International Airport. The state’s December 2024 announcement identified the Airport and North Campuses at 5400 International Blvd. and 9775 Patriot Blvd.; it said the Orangeburg West Campus was not affected.
How the announced milestones fit together
The production target and construction schedule refer to different milestones. Boeing’s November 2025 release said the site was set to reach 10 787s per month in 2026. The December 2024 expansion announcement separately expected the expanded operations to be online in early 2027. Both are future plans as stated in those announcements, not confirmation that the target has been met or that the new facilities are complete.

How many jobs and how much construction are planned?
Boeing’s November 2025 announcement put the infrastructure investment at more than $1 billion and said 1,000 new jobs were planned over five years. The earlier December 2024 announcement from the South Carolina Department of Commerce had listed a $1 billion investment and 500 new jobs over five years. The figures are plans announced at different times; the later Boeing release is the updated public estimate.
Boeing also projected that construction would involve more than 2,500 workers and over 6.2 million construction hours. These are projected construction-effort figures, not totals confirmed as completed.
