BMO Bank Review 2026: Checking, Savings, Fees, Rates and Pros and Cons

BMO is a legitimate FDIC-insured U.S. bank with strong branch access and a compelling no-fee checking account, but its traditional savings rates lag. Alto offers higher yields with fewer banking features.

Verdict: BMO Bank is a legitimate, FDIC-insured U.S. bank with a strong branch and ATM network, useful digital-banking tools, and an attractive no-monthly-fee checking account. Its traditional BMO savings accounts are much less compelling because their yields are low. BMO’s separate online-only brand, Alto, offers a materially higher savings yield, but it does not provide branch, ATM, debit-card, check, wire-transfer, or Zelle access.

BMO is therefore best for customers who want a physical branch, cash-deposit capability, and everyday checking without a maintenance fee. It is less attractive for someone whose main goal is maximizing savings interest or maintaining a simple all-in-one online banking experience. This review covers BMO Bank N.A. in the United States, using publicly available information as of August 10, 2026. Rates, fees, bonus terms, and product availability can change.

BMO Financial Group is the Canadian-headquartered parent company. It reported approximately $1.5 trillion in total assets as of January 31, 2026, but that figure describes the wider financial group—not simply BMO Bank N.A.’s U.S. retail deposit business. BMO Canada has different products, terminology, fees, and deposit-insurance rules. This article uses U.S. terms such as checking, savings, and CD.

Is BMO Bank legitimate and safe?

Yes. BMO Bank N.A. is a legitimate U.S. bank, and its eligible deposit accounts are FDIC-insured up to applicable limits. Customers can verify the bank through the FDIC BankFind Suite and should confirm that account-opening documents identify the legal bank as BMO Bank N.A.

FDIC insurance generally protects eligible deposits if an insured bank fails, subject to coverage limits and ownership-category rules. It does not protect investments from market losses, and it does not automatically insure every dollar above the applicable limit. Deposits held in BMO branch accounts, other U.S. BMO-branded accounts, and Alto generally count toward the same BMO Bank N.A. insurance limit. In practical terms, putting $250,000 in a BMO savings account and another $250,000 in Alto does not automatically create two separate $250,000 insurance limits.

Safety and customer experience are separate questions. BMO is a large, established banking group, but size does not guarantee that every fraud investigation, account hold, branch visit, or customer-service interaction will be smooth.

BMO checking accounts compared

Account Monthly fee Opening deposit Interest Overdraft position Best for
Smart Advantage Checking $0 $25 None Current product page lists $20 per eligible item, subject to exceptions Fee-conscious customers who want ordinary checking and branch access
Smart Money Checking $5; waived for customers under 25 $25 None No overdraft fees People who prioritize avoiding overdraft fees
Relationship Checking $25 unless waived $25 Yes See current account disclosures Customers with larger BMO balances or multiple qualifying relationships

The current details come from BMO’s checking comparison, Smart Advantage page, and retail deposit disclosures. Always check the account-specific disclosure immediately before opening an account.

Smart Advantage Checking: BMO’s strongest mainstream account

Smart Advantage is the account that makes BMO most interesting for everyday banking. It has no monthly maintenance fee, no minimum monthly balance requirement, and a $25 minimum opening deposit. It does not pay interest, so it is designed for spending and cash management rather than holding savings.

BMO promotes access to more than 40,000 fee-free BMO and Allpoint ATMs in the United States. That figure includes participating Allpoint machines, not just BMO-owned ATMs. BMO separately promotes more than 1,400 BMO ATMs, including more than 700 at non-branch locations such as airports, convenience stores, gas stations, and sports venues. The network can be valuable if you routinely withdraw cash, but readers should check the ATM locator rather than assume every nearby machine is fee-free.

Smart Advantage has less obvious costs. The public product page lists a $3 paper-statement fee and a $3 check-image fee. Paperless statements can help avoid the statement charge, and BMO says certain fee waivers may be available for customers age 65 or older. Customers who need frequent paper records or check images should include those charges in their comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BMO Smart Money versus Smart Advantage

Smart Money costs $5 per month for most customers, although BMO waives the fee for customers under 25. Its main differentiator is that it has no overdraft fees. It also requires a $25 opening deposit, pays no interest, and is not otherwise a high-yield account.

The practical choice is straightforward:

  • Choose Smart Advantage if you can keep enough money available to avoid overdrawing and want a genuinely free checking account.
  • Consider Smart Money if overdrawing is a recurring risk and the $5 monthly cost is less than the overdraft fees you might otherwise incur.

Smart Money is not automatically the better account simply because it advertises no overdraft fees. A customer who rarely overdraws may pay $60 per year for protection they never uses. Conversely, a customer with irregular income or recurring payment timing problems may value the predictable monthly charge.

Relationship Checking

Relationship Checking has a $25 monthly fee unless the customer satisfies the applicable waiver requirements. It pays interest and can provide relationship-package benefits, including unlimited non-BMO ATM transactions and up to $25 in ATM-owner surcharge rebates per statement period according to BMO’s promotional comparison.

This account is aimed at customers who keep substantial balances at BMO or use multiple qualifying BMO products. It is not automatically a good choice for a couple, a household, or anyone who wants a premium account. The fee-waiver tiers and qualifying-activity rules can change, so review BMO’s current Relationship Package disclosure before relying on a waiver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BMO overdraft rules: the details matter

BMO’s overdraft policy is more complicated than saying that it either does or does not charge a fee:

  • Smart Money Checking has no overdraft fees.
  • Other eligible accounts may incur a $20 overdraft fee per item.
  • No overdraft fee applies when the item is $5 or less.
  • No overdraft fee applies if the account is overdrawn by $20 or less at the close of the business day on which the item is presented.
  • BMO gives an additional business day to bring the account to $20 or less.
  • Up to three overdraft fees may be charged per business day.
  • Recurring debit-card transactions, ACH payments, and checks can still produce overdraft fees.
  • ATM and one-time debit-card overdrafts depend on whether the customer has opted in to that service.

These terms mean that a small, promptly corrected shortfall may not produce a fee, but customers should not assume that all transactions are protected by a cushion. Older BMO pages and third-party reviews may mention a $15 fee or a $50 cushion. BMO’s current overdraft page and Smart Advantage page show a $20 fee and $20 threshold; Bankrate identifies a February 9, 2026 change from the older figures. Check BMO’s current overdraft page and Deposit Account Agreement before opening.

BMO savings accounts and rates

BMO’s traditional savings lineup is the biggest weakness in this review. Its checking account can be a good value, but the ordinary savings products are not strong choices for maximizing interest.

Savings Builder

Savings Builder has no monthly maintenance fee and requires a $25 minimum opening deposit. BMO advertises a $5 monthly reward during the first year when the balance grows by at least $200 in that month. The maximum advertised reward is $60. Interest and reward payments do not count toward the $200 growth requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The formal disclosure showed a 0.01% APY as of the reviewed date, subject to change. That means the temporary $5 reward—not the interest rate—is the reason to consider the account. It may help someone establish a recurring savings habit, but the reward is modest and expires after the first year. Review the Savings Builder terms and deposit disclosure for current eligibility details.

BMO Online Savings

BMO’s public Online Savings page displayed a 0.60% APY as of July 18, 2026 for the displayed ZIP code 60603. It listed no monthly maintenance fee. The page and formal disclosure showed a $25 minimum opening deposit, but another portion of the same public page displayed “no minimum opening deposit.” Because BMO’s page is internally inconsistent, verify the amount in the live application flow and current disclosure before opening.

The broader issue is yield. A variable APY of 0.60% may be better than a checking account earning nothing, but it is generally not competitive with the strongest online savings accounts. Rates vary by ZIP code, product, and date, so treat the displayed figure as a dated example rather than a nationwide promise. See BMO’s current Online Savings page.

Growth Money Market

Growth Money Market charges a $10 monthly maintenance fee, waived with a $5,000 minimum daily balance. BMO says customers may qualify for a higher rate when they also have Relationship Checking and meet qualifying-activity requirements. The rate is variable, and the account agreement limits certain withdrawals or transfers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This account may suit someone holding at least $5,000 who wants money-market access and can benefit from BMO’s relationship pricing. It is not attractive if the balance will regularly fall below the waiver threshold or if the relationship requirements do not produce a meaningful rate improvement. Compare the current rate and terms on BMO’s savings and money-market page.

BMO standard CDs

BMO’s standard CDs require at least $1,000 and offer terms ranging from three months to five years. The rate is fixed for the term, but the money is not as flexible as savings. CDs may automatically renew at maturity, and a 10-calendar-day grace period generally follows maturity. Customers usually must contact a branch or BMO’s Customer Contact Center to close or withdraw a CD.

As an illustration of the reviewed rate environment, BMO’s public rate page showed 0.05% APY for three-, six-, and nine-month standard CDs and 0.75% APY for 12- through 60-month terms, with a displayed rate date of July 16, 2026 and a displayed ZIP code. Those rates should not be generalized nationally because CD rates can vary by ZIP code, balance, term, product type, and promotion.

Special CDs can have different renewal treatment. When a CD special matures, BMO may automatically renew it into a different standard term. Calendar the maturity date and grace period rather than assuming the money will return automatically to checking. Review BMO’s CD rate page and CD disclosure.

Alto review: BMO’s higher-yield online option

Alto changes the savings assessment. As of July 24, 2026, Alto advertised 3.00% APY on its online savings account, with no fees, no minimum opening deposit, no minimum balance requirement, and unlimited transfers and withdrawals. That is materially more competitive than the reviewed traditional BMO savings rates.

Feature Alto Traditional BMO branch-linked accounts
APY 3.00% APY as of July 24, 2026 Varies; BMO Online Savings displayed 0.60% as of July 18, 2026 for a displayed ZIP code
Minimum opening deposit $0 Often $25, depending on product and current application terms
Monthly fee None Varies by product; some savings accounts have no fee
Branches and ATMs None; BMO branches and ATMs cannot service Alto Available where BMO has branches and participating ATMs
Digital access Separate Alto credentials Standard BMO Digital Banking
Payments and access ACH transfers; no checks, debit card, wire transfers, or Zelle Broader checking and payment features
FDIC coverage Through BMO Bank N.A.; aggregates with other BMO deposits Through BMO Bank N.A.

Alto is not available through standard BMO Digital Banking. Customers need separate online-banking credentials, and BMO branches and ATMs cannot handle Alto transactions. Alto does not support cash deposits, checks, debit cards, wire transfers, or Zelle. The trade-off is clear: Alto may be better for an emergency fund that can move by ACH, while a BMO branch account is better for cash, teller service, and day-to-day payments.

A practical arrangement is to use BMO Smart Advantage for checking and cash access while keeping emergency savings at Alto or another competitive online savings provider. Before doing so, track total deposits at BMO and Alto for FDIC-insurance purposes.

Current BMO $400 checking bonus

As of August 10, 2026, BMO advertised a $400 checking bonus for eligible new personal checking customers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The advertised offer requires the customer to:

  1. Apply for a new Smart Advantage, Smart Money, or Relationship Checking account between June 30 and September 8, 2026.
  2. Use the applicable promotional process or code.
  3. Receive at least $4,000 in qualifying direct deposits within 90 days of opening.
  4. Keep the account open, in good standing, and at a positive balance when the bonus is paid.

Qualifying direct deposits generally include regular income such as wages, pensions, Social Security, or government benefits. Transfers from another bank, brokerage transfers, teller deposits, ATM deposits, Zelle, Venmo, and similar person-to-person payments do not qualify. BMO says the bonus is generally paid approximately 100 days after account opening, and the payment may be taxable.

Eligibility can also be affected by prior BMO personal checking ownership, joint-account signers, trustees, and account-specific restrictions. A joint applicant should not assume that the other applicant’s eligibility is unaffected. Read the complete BMO bonus terms before applying. A bonus is worthwhile only if the account’s fees and switching effort do not exceed the value of the reward.

Branches, ATMs, and cash access

BMO’s physical network is one of its strongest advantages, but it is not evenly distributed across the country. BMO has a substantial presence in parts of the Midwest and western United States, along with selected markets elsewhere. A national ATM number does not tell you whether a convenient full-service branch exists nearby.

BMO promotes more than 40,000 fee-free BMO and Allpoint ATMs nationwide, more than 1,400 BMO ATMs, and more than 700 BMO ATMs at non-branch locations. Use the branch locator before opening, especially if you need cash deposits, cashier’s checks, in-person identity verification, or help with a blocked account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The August 10, 2026 ATM-fee discrepancy

BMO’s current Handbook and deposit disclosure include an effective-date notice stating that, beginning August 10, 2026, BMO is no longer charging its own $3 fee for certain non-BMO ATM transactions where that fee previously applied. However, the same documents still contain older product tables listing a $3 fee, and the public Smart Advantage page also lists $3.

The safest interpretation is:

BMO announced an August 10, 2026 change removing its own $3 non-BMO ATM transaction fee, but some live product pages and disclosure tables still show the former charge. The ATM operator’s surcharge may still apply. Confirm the account-specific fee schedule before relying on the change.

This should not be described as worldwide free ATM access. Domestic participating-ATM access and foreign ATM use are treated differently in BMO’s disclosures, and foreign transaction fees may apply.

Digital banking and mobile features

BMO Digital Banking supports online and mobile account access, bill payment, external transfers, mobile check deposit, account alerts, balance and statement access, Zelle, Savings Goals, and digital debit-card and account-management tools. These features make BMO more functional than a branch-only bank and can reduce the need for routine visits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BMO says Zelle is free to use, but it is intended for people the customer knows and trusts. A payment that a customer authorizes to a scammer or unintended recipient may not receive the same protection as an unauthorized transaction. Verify the recipient before sending money and report suspected fraud promptly. BMO’s Digital Banking FAQ, Zelle page, and online-banking page contain current feature and disclosure information.

BMO security and fraud handling

BMO says it reimburses losses from unauthorized transactions through BMO Digital Banking for personal banking accounts, subject to its terms, and operates fraud-monitoring and financial-crimes functions. Customers should report suspected fraud immediately through BMO’s security and fraud-reporting channels.

BMO also says it will not unexpectedly request a password, PIN, Social Security number, or one-time passcode by phone, email, or text. Treat anyone asking for those credentials as a potential scammer, even if the caller claims to be from the bank.

The distinction between unauthorized and authorized but fraudulent is important. If a criminal uses an account without the customer’s permission, that is different from a customer being tricked into approving a Zelle payment. The latter may not receive the same reimbursement treatment. See BMO’s Security Center and fraud-reporting instructions.

BMO customer service, complaints, and reliability

BMO’s U.S. general customer-care number is 1-888-340-2265. BMO lists general customer-service hours as Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Central Time and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central Time. Password resets, lost or stolen debit-card reporting, and debit-card activation are available 24 hours a day. Secure chat is also available through Digital Banking, along with branch support.

Those channels show availability, not service quality. The actual experience can vary depending on whether the problem is handled by a branch, centralized phone support, a fraud team, or a department investigating an account hold or deposit dispute.

Regulatory event

In April 2026, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency announced a prohibition order against a former BMO Bank N.A. associate banker. The OCC said the former employee made unauthorized withdrawals totaling more than $164,000 from an elderly customer’s account.

This is relevant to a safety review, but it must be described accurately. The action concerned a former employee’s conduct and a specific customer account. It does not by itself establish a bank-wide unauthorized-withdrawal scheme or prove that typical BMO customers face that outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consumer complaint evidence

The CFPB Consumer Complaint Database can help readers examine complaint narratives and company responses. It is not a customer-satisfaction survey: complaints are submitted by consumers, are not a random sample of all BMO customers, and often represent serious edge cases. Complaint volume should be normalized by product scale or account count before comparing banks. A company response is not independent proof that a complaint was resolved.

BBB, Trustpilot, Reddit, and BankBranchLocator can reveal recurring reported problems such as account holds, deposit disputes, fraud claims, bonus disagreements, branch-access difficulties, and delays after acquisitions or system changes. But their ratings are self-selected and should be treated as qualitative evidence, not representative satisfaction scores. For example, BankBranchLocator reports a low aggregate rating based on user votes and complaints; that is not BMO’s actual customer-satisfaction rate.

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Retail Banking Satisfaction Study surveyed more than 109,000 retail customers and reports regional bank rankings. Unless BMO’s specific regional score and placement are verified in the underlying results, it would be misleading to substitute a general U.S. satisfaction result for BMO’s own performance.

BMO pros and cons

Pros

  • Legitimate U.S. bank with FDIC-insured deposits through BMO Bank N.A.
  • Smart Advantage Checking has no monthly maintenance fee.
  • Large BMO and Allpoint ATM access in the United States.
  • Physical branches can help customers who deposit cash or prefer teller service.
  • Useful online and mobile features, including mobile deposit, Bill Pay, alerts, external transfers, and Zelle.
  • A substantial current checking bonus is available to eligible customers in specified states.
  • Alto provides a higher-yield online savings option within the BMO family.

Cons

  • Traditional BMO savings APYs are weak compared with competitive online savings accounts.
  • Rates can vary by product, ZIP code, balance, relationship status, and date.
  • Public product pages and disclosures currently contain inconsistent ATM-fee information.
  • Paper statements and check images can cost extra on Smart Advantage.
  • Relationship Checking can be expensive without the correct balances or qualifying relationships.
  • Alto requires separate credentials and cannot be serviced at BMO branches or ATMs.
  • Reported complaints include holds, fraud disputes, service delays, and promotional disagreements, although these sources do not represent all customers.

Who should use BMO?

BMO is a good fit if you:

  • Live near a BMO branch and want in-person support.
  • Deposit cash or frequently use teller services.
  • Want no-monthly-fee checking without using an online-only bank.
  • Value a large domestic ATM network.
  • Can meet the $4,000 qualifying-direct-deposit requirement for the current bonus.
  • Want checking, lending, credit cards, mortgages, wealth services, and branch support within one financial group.
  • Can use BMO’s relationship benefits enough to justify Relationship Checking.

Look elsewhere if you:

  • Mainly need a high-yield emergency fund.
  • Do not have a nearby BMO branch and have no need for branch access.
  • Need broad ATM-fee reimbursement, paper statements, cashier’s checks, and other services with minimal account-specific charges.
  • Cannot meet the bonus’s direct-deposit requirements.
  • Want checking and savings under one simple digital login; Alto uses a separate login.
  • Are particularly sensitive to account holds, extended fraud investigations, or unclear promotional terms.

BMO versus common alternatives

Online high-yield savings bank

An online bank such as Ally may be a better choice when APY is the priority, branch access is unnecessary, and cash deposits are not important. Ally advertises a variable savings rate, no monthly maintenance fee, and no minimum deposit on its online savings account page. The specific rate should be checked directly because online savings yields change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large national branch bank

Chase is a useful comparison for customers who prioritize a broad national branch network, ATMs, mobile banking, and promotions. Chase advertises more than 14,000 ATMs and 5,000 branches, while its Total Checking account has a $15 monthly fee that can be waived through qualifying electronic deposits or balance requirements. Compare the actual waiver, overdraft policy, savings APY, cash-deposit convenience, and branch density in your area rather than concluding that one bank is universally cheaper.

BMO’s no-fee Smart Advantage account is potentially more attractive than a fee-based national-bank checking account, but Chase may be more convenient for someone who travels or lives outside BMO’s footprint.

Credit union

A local credit union may provide more personalized branch service, lower fees, and local lending decisions. The trade-offs can include membership requirements, a smaller branch and ATM network, fewer nationwide product options, and less advanced digital functionality. The best choice depends heavily on the credit union’s actual fee schedule and shared-branch or ATM arrangements.

A separate-account strategy

Many customers do not need one institution to do everything. A reasonable strategy is to use BMO Smart Advantage for checking, cash deposits, and branch access; keep emergency savings at Alto or another high-yield provider; and use a separate CD provider if BMO’s current CD rate is not competitive. Monitor combined deposits at BMO and Alto for FDIC-insurance purposes and maintain enough checking liquidity to avoid overdrafts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify before opening a BMO account

  1. Branch availability: Search your ZIP code in BMO’s branch locator and confirm that the location handles the services you need.
  2. Current fee schedule: Read the account-specific disclosure, particularly for paper statements, check images, ATM transactions, overdrafts, and cashier’s checks.
  3. ATM terms: Confirm whether BMO’s August 10, 2026 non-BMO ATM-fee change is reflected in your account documents, and remember that the ATM owner may charge a surcharge.
  4. Bonus eligibility: Confirm your state, application deadline, prior-account status, joint-account eligibility, qualifying deposit source, 90-day deadline, and payout timing.
  5. Savings yield: Check the live APY, rate date, ZIP-code qualification, minimum deposit, and whether the rate is variable.
  6. Alto access: Decide whether separate credentials and ACH-only access are acceptable before choosing Alto for savings.
  7. FDIC exposure: Add together your BMO and Alto deposits by ownership category when evaluating insurance limits.
  8. CD maturity: Calendar the maturity date and 10-day grace period so an unwanted automatic renewal does not lock up your money again.
  9. Account maintenance: BMO says it may close accounts with zero balances, so do not assume an empty account will remain open indefinitely after a bonus.

Is BMO Bank the same as Bank of Montreal or BMO Canada?

BMO Financial Group is the Canadian-headquartered parent. BMO Bank N.A. is the U.S. bank discussed in this review, while BMO Canada offers separate Canadian products and uses different terms and deposit-insurance rules.

Which BMO checking account is best?

Smart Advantage Checking is generally the best mainstream choice for customers who want no monthly maintenance fee, branch access, and ATM access. Smart Money may be better for someone who prioritizes no overdraft fees and accepts a $5 monthly fee. Relationship Checking is mainly for customers who can use its interest and relationship benefits enough to justify or waive the $25 monthly fee.

Does BMO charge overdraft fees?

It depends on the account. Smart Money has no overdraft fees. Other eligible accounts may charge $20 per item, with exceptions for items of $5 or less, accounts overdrawn by $20 or less at the end of the business day, and a further business day to cure the overdraft. Up to three fees may apply per business day.

What is the current BMO checking bonus?

As of August 10, 2026, BMO advertised a $400 bonus for eligible new personal checking customers in 14 listed states. The customer must apply by September 8, 2026, receive at least $4,000 in qualifying direct deposits within 90 days, and keep the account open, in good standing, and positive when the bonus is paid. Transfers, brokerage deposits, teller deposits, ATM deposits, Zelle, Venmo, and similar payments do not qualify.

Does BMO have a high-yield savings account?

BMO’s traditional savings products are not especially competitive based on the reviewed rates. Its separate Alto brand advertised 3.00% APY as of July 24, 2026. Alto is online-only, uses separate credentials, and does not provide branch or BMO ATM servicing, checks, debit cards, wires, or Zelle.

Can I use Alto at a BMO branch or ATM?

No. Alto accounts cannot be serviced through BMO branches, BMO ATMs, or standard BMO Digital Banking. Money generally moves through ACH transfers using separate Alto online credentials.

Does BMO use Zelle?

Yes. BMO Digital Banking supports Zelle. BMO warns that authorized payments sent to scammers or unintended recipients may not receive the same protection as unauthorized transactions, so Zelle should be used only with people you know and trust.

How many BMO ATMs are available?

BMO promotes more than 40,000 fee-free BMO and Allpoint ATMs nationwide, including more than 1,400 BMO ATMs and more than 700 BMO ATMs at non-branch locations. The 40,000 figure is not a claim that every ATM is BMO-owned or that foreign ATM use is free.

What happens when a BMO CD matures?

BMO CDs may automatically renew, and a CD special may renew into a different standard term. A 10-calendar-day grace period generally follows maturity. Calendar the maturity date and contact BMO during the grace period if you want to withdraw or move the funds.

How do I report BMO fraud or make a complaint?

Report suspected fraud immediately through BMO’s fraud-reporting page or the contact method listed for your account. For unresolved consumer-finance problems, you can review or submit information through the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database. Keep records of dates, representatives, confirmation numbers, and supporting documents.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: BMO is a solid branch-oriented checking bank, not a standout traditional savings bank. Smart Advantage Checking is the main reason to consider it: there is no monthly maintenance fee, the ATM network is substantial, and branches are useful for cash and in-person service. The current $400 bonus can improve the value if you live in an eligible state and can receive $4,000 in qualifying direct deposits.

For savings, compare the live APY rather than relying on BMO’s brand or size. Alto is more competitive on yield but is a separate online experience with important access limitations. For many households, the best answer is a hybrid: BMO for checking and branch access, and Alto or another high-yield provider for savings.
