Best Online Personal Loans of 2026: Top Picks by Borrower Need

The best online personal loan depends on your credit, amount, purpose, fees and funding needs. Compare LightStream, SoFi, Discover, Upstart, Upgrade and more using personalized APR, net proceeds and total repayment.

There is no single best online personal loan for every borrower. The right choice depends on the APR you actually qualify for, the amount you need, your credit profile, how quickly you need the money and whether an origination fee reduces your proceeds.

As of August 10, 2026, LightStream is a strong candidate for excellent-credit borrowers seeking a large loan without lender fees; SoFi stands out for large online loans; Discover is a compelling no-origination-fee option; and Upstart may be worth checking for thin or limited credit. But a lender with a higher advertised starting APR can still be cheaper for you after comparing the personalized APR, net proceeds and total repayment.

This guide compares leading online lenders by borrower need rather than declaring one universal winner. Rates, fees, eligibility, loan purposes and state availability can change, so treat the figures below as a current comparison—not a guaranteed offer.

Quick comparison: the best online personal loans

The advertised online personal-loan market generally spans roughly 6% to 36% APR, with common loan amounts from about $1,000 to $100,000. The lowest advertised rates are generally reserved for the strongest applicants and may depend on the loan purpose, term, autopay or a relationship discount. A lender’s range may also include an origination fee in the APR while another lender’s range may not.

For context, Bankrate reported a 12.28% average rate on June 10, 2026, for a borrower with a 700 FICO score seeking $5,000 over three years. That is a benchmark for a specific borrower and loan—not a quote for the average applicant. See Bankrate’s rate data and NerdWallet’s online-loan comparison for additional market context.

Rates and terms in this table were checked against the supplied lender disclosures on August 10, 2026. Advertised ranges are not personalized offers.

Lender Best for Advertised APR Amount and terms Origination fee Rate-check inquiry Funding indication Main drawback
LightStream Excellent credit and no lender fees Up to 25.39% maximum shown; varies by purpose $5,000–$100,000; fixed, fully amortizing terms vary None stated; Florida documentary stamp tax may apply Usually a full application and hard inquiry; verify current process Same-day funding may be available after approval and acceptance Best suited to good-to-excellent credit; no conventional soft-pull prequalification reported
SoFi Large loans and a polished online experience 6.99%–35.49%, with stated discounts $5,000–$100,000; two to seven years 0%–7% may apply and is deducted from proceeds Soft pull for rate checking Timing depends on approval, verification and bank processing $5,000 minimum; lowest rate is not typical
Discover No-origination-fee borrowing 7.99%–24.99% $2,500–$40,000; 36–84 months No origination, closing or other loan fees according to Discover Rate checking generally uses a soft inquiry Decision may arrive the same day; funds may be sent as early as the next business day after acceptance $40,000 maximum and income, credit and use restrictions
Upstart Thin or limited credit history 6.20%–35.99%; range varies by state $1,000–$75,000; three or five years Offer-specific; can materially reduce proceeds Soft pull for rate checking; hard inquiry if you proceed Funds may be available as soon as one business day after verification Only two term choices and potentially high origination fees
Upgrade Fair credit, longer terms and debt payoff 7.74%–35.99% $1,000–$50,000; 24–84 months 1.85%–9.99%, deducted from proceeds Soft pull for rate checking Generally within one business day after required verification High maximum APR and potentially substantial fee; some offers are secured
Best Egg Fast funding or comparing a secured option 6.99%–35.99% $2,000–$50,000 unsecured; generally 36–60 months 0.99%–9.99% unsecured Soft pull for rate checking Usually one to three business days after successful verification Unavailable in some states; secured offers put collateral at risk
LendingClub Credit-card consolidation with direct pay 5.96%–35.99% Up to $60,000; offer-specific terms 0%–8% Check the current application flow Depends on approval, verification and bank processing Actual APR and fees may be much higher than the starting range
Happy Money Specialized credit-card payoff 8.95%–35.99% $5,000–$50,000; 24–60 months Origination fee; other lender fees may apply Check the offer terms Offer-specific Not suitable for every purpose; $5,000 minimum and longer repayment can increase cost
PenFed Credit-union alternative Personalized Up to $50,000; terms up to five years Offer-specific Rate checking generally available without an initial score impact Offer-specific Membership is required, although it can be created during the application process
Wells Fargo Existing Wells Fargo customers 6.74%–26.74% with qualifying relationship discount $3,000–$100,000; 12–84 months No origination or closing fee; no prepayment penalty Check the bank’s current process Offer-specific Available only to existing Wells Fargo customers

Best online personal loans by borrower profile

1. LightStream: best potential price for excellent-credit borrowers

LightStream offers fixed-rate, fully amortizing unsecured loans from $5,000 to $100,000. It states that it charges no origination fee, application fee or prepayment penalty. Same-day funding may be available after approval and acceptance, although bank processing and verification still matter.

LightStream is most attractive when you have good-to-excellent credit, need a relatively large amount and want to avoid a fee being deducted from the proceeds. Its rate page shows a maximum APR of 25.39%, materially below the 35.99% ceiling common among several fintech lenders, although the actual range can vary by loan purpose. Rates are quoted with AutoPay; choosing the invoice option adds 0.50 percentage points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important limitation: do not assume LightStream will show you a conventional soft-pull offer before the application. Forbes Advisor reports that applicants generally must submit a full application and receive a hard credit inquiry to determine eligibility. Verify the current process before applying. LightStream also cannot refinance an existing LightStream loan, and Florida documentary stamp tax may apply outside the quoted APR.

2. SoFi: best for large online loans

SoFi offers $5,000 to $100,000 with terms generally ranging from two to seven years. Its advertised fixed APR range was 6.99%–35.49% as of June 23, 2026, including stated discounts. Rate checking uses a soft credit pull, so it is a practical first quote for a strong-credit borrower who needs more than many smaller lenders will provide.

SoFi’s Direct Pay feature may provide a rate discount when at least 50% of the proceeds go to eligible creditors. That can be useful for consolidation, but continue paying the old accounts until each creditor confirms that the payment has posted.

Fee correction: SoFi should not automatically be described as fee-free. Its official disclosure allows a 0%–7% origination fee, depending on the offer, and the fee is deducted from the proceeds. A $20,000 approval with a 5% fee would deliver about $19,000 before other adjustments. The $5,000 minimum also excludes borrowers who need only a small amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Discover: best no-fee option

Discover offers $2,500–$40,000 with terms of 36, 48, 60, 72 or 84 months. Its comparison tool showed an APR range of 7.99%–24.99% when checked for this guide. Discover says it charges no origination fee, closing fee or other loan fee, which makes the amount approved easier to translate into the amount deposited.

Discover says most applicants receive a decision the same day and that funds may be sent as early as the next business day after acceptance. It lists a minimum individual or household annual income of $25,000. Certain uses are restricted, including paying Capital One or Discover accounts, secured loans and post-secondary education expenses. Read the offer rather than assuming every debt qualifies for direct payment.

Discover’s lack of an origination fee is valuable, but it does not guarantee the lowest total cost. A competing lender with a fee could still be cheaper if its personalized APR is sufficiently lower. Compare total repayment and net proceeds.

4. Upstart: best candidate for thin or limited credit

Upstart is a marketplace platform rather than the lender itself. It says its underwriting may consider education, employment and other information alongside conventional credit data. That makes it worth checking for an applicant whose traditional credit file is thin but whose income or education history is stronger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Loan amounts range from $1,000 to $75,000, subject to state and borrower restrictions. Available terms are only three or five years. The advertised APR range is 6.20%–35.99%, with the full range varying by state. Rate checking uses a soft inquiry; a hard inquiry occurs if you proceed with the application. Funds may be available as soon as one business day after verification and bank processing.

The fee deserves close attention. Upstart’s representative example uses a 7.25% origination fee on a $10,000 loan, reducing proceeds to $9,275 while repayment is based on the larger financed amount. That is an example, not a fee charged to every borrower, but it illustrates why the final disclosure matters. State-specific minimums can also be much higher than the national minimum: the current page lists $3,100 in Georgia, $1,500 in Hawaii and $7,000 in Massachusetts.

“No minimum credit score” language, where used in marketing, does not mean guaranteed approval or inexpensive credit. Compare the offer with a credit-union loan and other alternatives.

5. Upgrade: best for fair credit and flexible loan structures

Upgrade offers $1,000–$50,000, fixed APRs of 7.74%–35.99% and terms of 24–84 months. Rate checking does not affect the credit score, and Upgrade says funding is generally sent within one business day after required verification clears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upgrade’s Debt Payoff option can send proceeds directly to eligible credit-card or personal-loan creditors. It also permits joint applications for some offers. Some offers may be secured by a vehicle or eligible home fixtures, so check whether collateral is required before accepting.

The principal trade-off is cost. Upgrade’s origination fee ranges from 1.85% to 9.99% and is deducted from proceeds. A 9.99% fee on a $10,000 loan is $999, potentially leaving $9,001 while the repayment calculation is based on the higher financed amount. Upgrade charges no prepayment fee, but paying early does not necessarily refund an origination fee.

6. Best Egg: best to investigate for fast funding or a secured option

Best Egg offers unsecured loans from $2,000 to $50,000, with advertised unsecured APRs of 6.99%–35.99% and generally 36–60-month terms. Unsecured origination fees range from 0.99% to 9.99%.

Best Egg says funds may arrive within one to three business days after successful verification, and about half of customers receive funds the next day. That is not a promise of same-day cash: approval, identity and income checks, cutoff times, weekends and bank processing can all change the timeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best Egg products are unavailable in Iowa, Vermont, West Virginia, Washington, D.C. and U.S. territories, and state-specific minimum loan amounts apply. A secured or homeowner product is available in some locations with different rates, fees and terms. Best Egg describes that product as using eligible permanent home fixtures rather than a traditional home-equity lien, but collateral still creates a risk of loss after default. Do not choose a secured loan merely because its advertised rate is lower.

7. LendingClub: best to investigate for direct creditor payment

LendingClub advertises personal loans up to $60,000, with an APR range of 5.96%–35.99% and an origination or processing fee of 0%–8%. Its debt-consolidation product can send payments directly to creditors.

Direct pay can make consolidation more controlled, but it does not eliminate the need to monitor the old accounts. Interest or minimum payments may continue until the creditor receives and posts the payment. Confirm the payoff amount, retain confirmation numbers and keep making payments until the account is actually updated.

The 5.96% starting APR is not a realistic expectation for every applicant. For perspective, Prosper—not LendingClub—reported an average APR of 24.19% for three-year loans funded from January 1 through March 31, 2026. That Prosper figure cannot be applied to LendingClub or every borrower, but it demonstrates why a headline minimum should never substitute for a personalized offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Happy Money: specialized credit-card consolidation candidate

Happy Money focuses on its Payoff Loan for credit-card debt. It offers $5,000–$50,000 with 24–60-month terms and a fixed APR range of 8.95%–35.99%; the rates page stated that range was accurate July 8, 2026.

The origination fee is the only standard fee identified by Happy Money, although the lender may charge late, returned-payment or failed-ACH fees. It is worth comparing when the offered APR is meaningfully below your existing card APR and direct creditor payment is available. A lower monthly payment alone is not enough: extending repayment can increase the total amount paid.

9. PenFed: a credit-union alternative

PenFed offers an online application, loans up to $50,000 and terms up to five years. Membership is required, but an applicant can create membership during the application process. Its personalized offer should be compared with online banks and fintech platforms, especially if avoiding a high origination fee is important.

PenFed’s exact rate, fee and eligibility terms are individualized. The credit-union option may be especially useful for a borrower who prefers a member-owned institution or wants another soft-pull quote before committing to a hard inquiry. Review the current state-specific disclosure and final offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Wells Fargo: best only for an eligible existing customer

Wells Fargo offers $3,000–$100,000 personal loans with 12–84-month terms. Its advertised APR range with a qualifying Wells Fargo relationship discount is 6.74%–26.74%. The bank states that it charges no origination or closing fee and no prepayment penalty.

This is not a universally available online lender: Wells Fargo says personal loans are offered only to existing customers. The lowest-rate disclosure is based on at least 10% of approved applicants qualifying for the lowest rate during a specified period, so it should not be treated as a typical quote. An eligible customer should compare the personalized offer against a credit union and online lenders.

How to choose the best offer for you

Use this decision tree first

  • Excellent credit and want to minimize fees? Check LightStream, then compare SoFi, Discover or an eligible bank or credit-union offer.
  • Need $50,000–$100,000? Start with SoFi, LightStream or Wells Fargo if you are an existing customer. Discover, Upgrade, Best Egg and PenFed have lower maximums.
  • Need less than $2,500? Check Upstart if your state permits the amount, but first investigate a credit union small-dollar loan, employer advance or payment arrangement.
  • Have thin or limited credit? Compare Upstart, Upgrade, PenFed and local credit unions. Do not confuse accessibility with affordability.
  • Consolidating credit-card balances? Compare LendingClub, Happy Money, SoFi Direct Pay, Upgrade Debt Payoff and a nonprofit debt-management plan.
  • Need money urgently? Compare the verified funding timeline—not an advertising phrase—and ask what happens if verification is delayed.
  • Considering a secured loan? Calculate the rate savings against the risk of losing the pledged asset.

1. Determine the exact amount and purpose

Borrow only what the expense requires. A lender’s minimum may tempt you to borrow more than needed, while an origination fee may mean that the approved amount does not equal the cash you receive. Confirm that the lender permits the purpose. Personal loans may restrict business use, education, real-estate-related expenses, secured-debt refinancing or refinancing an existing loan from the same lender.

LightStream, for example, says its unsecured loans are made to individuals for personal use, not businesses. Someone seeking business capital should compare business financing, a business credit card or an SBA-backed option instead of misstating the purpose on a personal-loan application.

2. Set a payment ceiling before looking at offers

Calculate the payment you can afford after rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, food, taxes, existing debt, emergency savings and irregular expenses. Approval is not proof that the payment fits your budget. A longer term can make an offer pass a monthly-payment test while making the debt much more expensive.

3. Prequalify with multiple lenders where possible

Begin with lenders that offer a soft-pull rate check, including SoFi, Upstart, Upgrade, Best Egg, Discover and PenFed. A soft inquiry generally does not affect your credit score, while a hard inquiry can be visible to creditors and may affect scoring models. Confirm exactly when the hard inquiry occurs.

Prequalification is not approval. Lenders use the terms differently, and a prequalified estimate can change after income, identity, debt and other verification. The CFPB explains that prequalification and preapproval do not guarantee a loan offer.

LightStream is the important exception to plan around: Forbes Advisor reports that it generally requires a full application and hard inquiry rather than offering a conventional soft-pull prequalification. Consider applying there only after comparing soft-pull offers, unless its terms are sufficiently attractive to justify the inquiry.

4. Compare personalized APR, net proceeds and total repayment

Do not rank offers by the advertised minimum APR or monthly payment. Record every offer in one table:

Field Offer A Offer B Offer C
Gross loan amount
Origination fee and percentage
Net proceeds deposited
APR
Interest rate
Term
Monthly payment
Total repayment
Expected funding date
Direct-pay creditors
Late or returned-payment fees
Prepayment penalty
Collateral required

APR is usually the better comparison number. It incorporates the interest rate and certain loan fees, whereas the interest rate alone can make a loan with a large origination fee look cheaper. The CFPB explains the difference between APR and interest rate.

5. Check discounts and fee mechanics

Ask whether the quoted APR assumes autopay, a relationship discount, Direct Pay or another condition. Confirm whether an origination fee is included in the APR and whether it is deducted from the proceeds or added to the loan balance. Also look for late fees, returned-payment or failed-ACH fees, optional insurance, documentation charges, administration fees and secured-loan filing costs.

6. Verify the use and direct-pay rules

Direct creditor payment can reduce the chance that consolidation proceeds are spent elsewhere, but it does not automatically close the old account or stop interest immediately. Discover’s loan agreement warns that creditor posting can take additional time. Continue making payments until the old creditor confirms receipt and the account reflects the payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Read the final disclosure before signing

Before accepting, read the Truth in Lending disclosure and promissory note. Confirm the amount financed, APR, payment schedule, first payment date, all fees, late-payment rules, prepayment provisions, collateral requirements and any arbitration clause. The Discover loan-agreement guide illustrates the information a borrower should expect to see.

How much does a $10,000 personal loan cost?

The following standard-amortization illustrations show why both APR and term matter. They exclude additional lender fees and are not quotes from any lender.

APR Term Approximate monthly payment Approximate interest over full term
8% 36 months $313 $1,281
18% 36 months $362 $3,015
36% 36 months $458 $6,489
8% 60 months $203 About $2,166
18% 60 months $254 About $5,236
36% 60 months $361 About $11,680

These examples produce two important conclusions:

  • A five-year term lowers the payment compared with a three-year term but increases the interest paid.
  • A 36% APR can make a payment look manageable while making the loan extraordinarily expensive. A loan below payday-loan pricing is not necessarily affordable or low-interest.

Use a calculator such as Bankrate’s personal-loan calculator, then add the actual origination fee and other disclosed costs.

How an origination fee changes the deal

An origination fee is commonly taken from the loan proceeds. On a $10,000 loan:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A 5% fee equals $500. You may receive $9,500 while repaying the financed $10,000 plus interest.
  • A 7% fee equals $700, leaving about $9,300 in proceeds.
  • A 10% fee equals $1,000, leaving about $9,000.

If you need exactly $10,000 in cash, a 5% fee means borrowing approximately $10,526 before interest. A 10% fee requires approximately $11,111. The exact amount depends on how the lender calculates and discloses the fee. See the CFPB’s explanation of personal-installment-loan fees.

Online personal loans versus alternatives

An online installment loan is not automatically the best solution. Compare the following before submitting an application.

Alternative When it may be better Risks or limitations
Credit-union personal loan Often worth checking for more personal underwriting, smaller loans or a lower-cost offer Membership, documentation and funding requirements vary; compare the actual APR
Bank personal loan You already have a relationship and may qualify for a discount or no-fee offer Eligibility can be limited to existing customers, as with Wells Fargo
0% balance-transfer card Potentially cheaper for credit-card debt if you qualify and repay within the promotional period There may be a transfer fee, a deadline, a lower credit limit and a high post-promotion APR; it generally does not provide cash for unrelated expenses
Creditor hardship plan You are struggling with an existing payment and want to avoid new debt May affect account terms, fees or access to credit; contact the creditor before missing payments
Nonprofit credit counseling or debt-management plan Credit-card debt is unaffordable and budgeting or creditor concessions are needed Confirm the organization is nonprofit and understand fees, account closures and the repayment schedule
Home-equity loan or HELOC A homeowner needs a large amount and can tolerate secured borrowing Your home is collateral; a HELOC may have a variable rate and payment
Employer advance or community assistance The need is small, urgent or tied to a specific essential bill Availability varies; review repayment terms and employment consequences
Credit-builder loan You need to establish payment history and the expense is not urgent It may not provide immediate usable cash in the same way as a personal loan
Credit-union payday alternative loan You need a small emergency loan and belong to a participating credit union Availability and eligibility vary; compare the total cost carefully
Payday loan Generally not a preferred alternative Short terms and high fees can create a rollover cycle. The CFPB says a typical $15-per-$100 two-week fee equates to an APR near 400%

For credit-card consolidation, a new loan saves money only when its APR and fees are lower, its term does not create excessive additional interest and you do not rebuild the card balances. The CFPB recommends examining why the debt accumulated, preparing a budget and considering nonprofit credit counseling.

How to apply safely online

  1. Confirm the lender’s identity. Use the lender’s official website, check the domain carefully and determine whether you are dealing with a bank, credit union, fintech platform, marketplace or lead generator.
  2. Gather accurate information. Have identification, Social Security number or other required identifier, current address and housing payment, employment and income details, bank information, existing monthly debt payments, loan purpose, requested amount and preferred term ready.
  3. Check state eligibility. Loan minimums, maximum APRs, fees, purposes and product availability can vary by state. Upstart lists state-specific minimums, and Best Egg lists states where its products are unavailable.
  4. Ask when the credit inquiry occurs. A soft-pull rate check generally does not affect your score; a hard inquiry may. Do not submit full applications to numerous lenders without understanding the impact.
  5. Reject advance-fee requests. A legitimate lender should not demand money before approval or funding through a wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency or prepaid card. Be suspicious of guaranteed approval, urgent pressure, requests for bank passwords or remote computer access and websites impersonating known banks. The CFPB identifies advance-fee demands as a major online-loan scam warning sign.
  6. Verify the funding date. Same-day approval is not the same as same-day usable funds. Verification, fraud review, weekday cutoff times, weekends and bank processing can delay the deposit.
  7. Monitor debt payoff. Confirm the amount deposited, first payment date and creditor-payoff confirmations. Keep paying existing accounts until payments post.
  8. Save the records. Keep the loan agreement, Truth in Lending disclosure, payment schedule, funding confirmation, creditor confirmations and all communications.

Special situations and common failure modes

Bad credit

Borrowers with scores below approximately 580 may face higher APRs, lower limits and shorter terms, although lenders also consider income, debt-to-income ratio, payment history, purpose, state and other factors. An offer at 30%–36% APR can be dramatically more expensive than the same loan at 8%–18%. A lender that accepts bad credit is not necessarily offering a financially suitable loan.

Before accepting a high-cost offer, compare a credit union, a credit-builder loan if the need is not urgent, a secured loan only if the collateral risk is acceptable, nonprofit credit counseling, a creditor hardship plan, an employer advance or community emergency assistance.

No credit or thin credit

Upstart may be worth checking because it says its model considers education, employment and other information in addition to conventional credit data. However, its offer may include a substantial origination fee, its terms are limited to three or five years and approval is not guaranteed. A local credit union may provide a better opportunity for individual underwriting.

Small emergency expenses

Many leading lenders require at least $1,000, $2,000 or $2,500, and SoFi requires at least $5,000. For a smaller need, ask the biller for a payment arrangement, check a credit union small-dollar loan, seek an employer advance or look for nonprofit assistance before using a high-cost product.

Payday loans are typically small, short-term loans with fees commonly ranging from $10 to $30 per $100 borrowed. A typical $15-per-$100 two-week fee equates to an APR near 400%, according to the CFPB.

Debt consolidation that does not work

Consolidation can fail when the new APR is not lower after fees, the repayment term is much longer, the borrower keeps using the paid-off cards, a home or other asset replaces unsecured debt as collateral, direct-pay timing causes missed payments or the new payment remains unaffordable.

Before consolidating, identify why the balances grew, make a realistic budget and decide how card use will change. Direct payment is helpful, but it does not close the accounts or prevent new charges automatically.

Secured loans

A secured personal loan can improve eligibility or reduce the APR, but default may result in the loss of the pledged vehicle, home fixture or other asset. Compare the dollar savings with the value and necessity of the collateral. Do not treat a secured loan as merely a cheaper unsecured loan.

Co-signers and co-borrowers

A co-signer generally becomes responsible for repayment if the primary borrower stops paying, even if the co-signer does not receive the money. A co-borrower or joint applicant applies with the primary borrower and may have access or ownership rights depending on the agreement. Both arrangements can expose another person’s credit and income to the lender. Discuss the payment plan and read the contract before applying together.

Active-duty servicemembers

The Military Lending Act protects covered active-duty servicemembers and dependents with a 36% Military Annual Percentage Rate cap and other restrictions on covered consumer loans. This is a MAPR protection for covered borrowers—not a universal federal 36% cap on every personal loan in the United States. See Military OneSource’s MLA information and the CFPB’s consumer guidance.

Marketplace platforms and the actual lender

The company shown in an advertisement may not be the institution making or servicing the loan. Upstart says it is not the lender and that loans are made by regulated financial institutions. Upgrade describes itself as a fintech platform whose loans are provided by bank partners. Prosper states that all of its personal loans are made by WebBank. Check the final agreement for the originating institution, servicing contact and complaint process.

Customer satisfaction is also not the same as price. J.D. Power’s 2026 study ranked American Express highest in personal-loan customer satisfaction, but that does not establish that American Express offers the lowest APR, widest eligibility or lowest total cost for a particular borrower. Use satisfaction data only as a supplement to cost, availability and contract analysis.

What makes a personal-loan offer genuinely good?

A strong offer has a personalized fixed APR that is competitive for your credit profile, enough net proceeds to cover the expense, a payment that fits your budget and a total repayment you can accept. It also has clear fees, no unnecessary collateral, a realistic funding timeline and a permitted loan purpose.

Do not choose an offer solely because it has:

  • the lowest advertised starting APR;
  • a low monthly payment created by an 84-month term;
  • a same-day approval headline;
  • the words no credit check or guaranteed approval;
  • a no-fee label that does not explain late, returned-payment or state-specific charges; or
  • a favorable customer-review score without a competitive APR and manageable repayment.

For a debt-consolidation loan, the most important comparison is often: how much debt is eliminated, how much cash reaches each creditor, how much the new loan costs in total and whether the new payment is sustainable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best online personal loan for bad credit?

There is no universal best bad-credit lender. Upgrade, Upstart, PenFed and local credit unions may be worth comparing, but an offer near 30%–36% APR can be extremely expensive. Compare the personalized APR, origination fee, net proceeds and total repayment with a hardship plan, nonprofit credit counseling, a secured loan or other alternatives before accepting.

Which online lender has the lowest APR?

The lowest advertised starting APR changes by lender, date, state, loan purpose, term, credit profile and discounts. LendingClub’s advertised minimum was 5.96%, while SoFi, LightStream, Best Egg and others advertise different starting points. None guarantees that a reader will receive its minimum. Compare personalized APRs and total repayment instead.

Can I get a personal loan without a hard credit check?

You can often check rates with a soft inquiry from lenders such as SoFi, Upstart, Upgrade, Best Egg, Discover or PenFed. A soft inquiry generally does not affect your score. A hard inquiry commonly occurs when you submit a full application or accept an offer. LightStream is reported to generally require a full application and hard inquiry, so verify its current process before applying.

What is a good personal-loan APR in 2026?

A good APR is one that is competitive for your credit profile and lower than the cost of the debt it replaces. Strong-credit borrowers may see single-digit or low-teens offers, while weaker applicants may receive much higher rates. The advertised market can reach about 36%, but that is not automatically affordable. Include origination fees and compare total repayment.

How fast can an online personal loan fund?

Some lenders advertise funding the same day or the next business day, but only after approval, acceptance and identity, income or bank verification. Weekends, cutoff times, fraud review and bank processing can delay usable funds. Same-day approval does not necessarily mean same-day money in your account.

Are online personal loans safe?

Loans from a verified bank, credit union or legitimate fintech platform can be safe, but scams are common. Never pay an advance fee by wire, gift card, cryptocurrency or prepaid card, and never provide a bank password or remote computer access. Verify the website, lender identity, APR, payment schedule and final disclosures before signing.

Can I use an online personal loan to consolidate credit cards?

Many lenders permit credit-card consolidation and some, including LendingClub, Happy Money, Upgrade and certain SoFi offers, can send funds directly to eligible creditors. Continue paying the cards until the payments post. Consolidation saves money only if the new APR, fees and term reduce total cost and you avoid rebuilding the card balances.

Does an origination fee reduce the amount I receive?

Usually, an origination fee is deducted from the loan proceeds. A 5% fee on a $10,000 loan may leave $9,500 while repayment is calculated on the financed amount. If you need exactly $10,000, you may need to borrow about $10,526 before interest. Check the offer’s exact fee and net-proceeds disclosure.

Should I choose a secured personal loan?

Only if you understand the collateral risk and the savings justify it. A secured loan may improve approval odds or reduce the APR, but default can put the pledged vehicle, home fixture or other asset at risk. Compare it with an unsecured offer and calculate the dollar savings, not just the rate.

Can I apply for a personal loan with a co-signer?

Some lenders permit a joint application or co-signer, but the other applicant generally becomes responsible if the primary borrower does not pay. A co-borrower may also have access or ownership rights depending on the agreement. Both applicants should understand the payment obligation and potential credit consequences.

Are personal-loan rates fixed?

The lenders highlighted here generally advertise fixed-rate installment loans, meaning the scheduled rate and payment do not change under the agreement. Confirm the final disclosure because fees, late charges, optional products and secured-loan terms can still affect the total cost.

What should I do if I am denied?

Review the adverse-action notice for the stated reasons, check your credit reports for errors, avoid submitting many full applications at once and consider a credit union, secured loan, co-borrower, hardship plan or nonprofit credit counseling. Do not respond to a guaranteed-approval offer that demands an upfront fee.

Can I get a personal loan with no credit history?

Possibly, but approval and pricing are not guaranteed. Upstart says its underwriting may consider education, employment and other information beyond conventional credit data. A credit union may also provide individual underwriting. Compare the origination fee, APR and term carefully, since limited-credit offers can be expensive.

What alternatives may be cheaper than an online personal loan?

Depending on the purpose and eligibility, compare a credit-union loan, 0% balance-transfer card, existing-creditor hardship plan, nonprofit debt-management plan, employer advance, community assistance or credit-builder loan. A home-equity loan or HELOC may cost less for some homeowners but is secured by the home. Compare total cost and risk rather than assuming any product is automatically cheaper.

The Bottom Line

The best online personal loan of 2026 is the best verified offer for your situation—not the lender with the most attractive headline. Start with soft-pull rate checks when available, narrow the market to two or three offers, then compare personalized APR, origination fee, net proceeds, monthly payment, total repayment, funding timeline and use restrictions. Choose the shortest affordable fixed-rate term, and walk away if the payment is unaffordable or the lender demands money before funding.
