Blizzard said in July 2025 that it would stop making new content for Warcraft Rumble, but continue regular systemic in-game events and bug fixes. The announcement did not say the game’s service would close. Blizzard attributed the change to the game’s difficulty finding a sustainable path toward its long-term ambitions; it did not say layoffs caused the decision.
What Blizzard said would change
Blizzard’s July 2025 support announcement drew a distinction between new content and ongoing support: “Moving forward, we’ll continue supporting Rumble with updates focused on regular, systemic in-game events and bug fixes, but no new content.” In practical terms, the company said it would stop developing additions to the game while continuing the specified kinds of maintenance and recurring events.

That is a major reduction in the game’s content roadmap, but it is not the same as an announced shutdown. Blizzard did not give a server-closure date or say that players would lose access. Its statement also does not establish that the planned event and bug-fix cadence has continued unchanged since the announcement.
Why Blizzard gave for the decision
Blizzard said Warcraft Rumble had “struggled to find its footing” relative to the company’s ambition for its long-term success. It said the team had listened to player feedback, refocused in some areas and explored different options, but the game was not “on a path to sustainability.” That is Blizzard’s stated business rationale; the announcement did not provide financial figures, player counts or a more specific account of the economics behind it.

Blizzard said development began nine years before the July 2025 announcement and that the game launched in 2023. The company did not specify a precise start date, so the development period should be understood as its relative description, not a calculated calendar date.
How the decision relates to layoffs
The announcement came amid Microsoft layoffs, and Engadget’s July 2, 2025 report connected the game’s support change to that broader context. Engadget, citing an internal email viewed by Aftermath, reported that some content developers would receive other roles and others would be let go. Blizzard’s public announcement said some team members would continue working on Rumble or other Blizzard games and that the company had parted ways with others, but it gave no number of affected workers.

The timing and staffing reports do not establish that layoffs caused Blizzard to stop making new content. The official explanation was the game’s lack of a sustainable path relative to the company’s ambitions; treat layoffs as contemporaneous workforce context, not a confirmed cause of the product decision.
What later labor developments do—and do not—show
On September 9, 2026, the Communications Workers of America said Blizzard workers had ratified contracts covering nearly 1,900 workers, including union-represented staff associated with Warcraft Rumble. The union described protections including recall rights for 14 months from a layoff announcement and four additional weeks of severance for union workers regardless of tenure. Those contract terms provide labor context; they do not indicate that Blizzard restored a new-content roadmap for the game.

What can be said about the game’s status
Blizzard’s games catalog lists Warcraft Rumble as a mobile action strategy game. That confirms its presence in the catalog when accessed, but a catalog entry alone does not establish that the game is currently accessible in every market, that its servers are operating, or that the support schedule announced in 2025 has continued without change. The sources covered here establish no verified current player count, revenue figure, or shutdown date.
