The brand says its US shampoo is suitable for color-treated hair and curls and coils, but the formula includes sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and fragrance—details worth checking if you avoid those ingredients. Product claims and customer impressions are not proof that the routine will work the same way for everyone.
What the HydraSource shampoo and conditioner are meant to do
Biolage positions Hydra Source Shampoo and its paired conditioner, called Conditioning Balm in the US range, as a routine for dry hair. The shampoo is intended to cleanse; the conditioner is intended to add conditioning after washing. On its US page, Biolage says to apply the shampoo to wet hair, lather, and rinse, and describes it as providing gentle cleansing and hydration. Those are manufacturer claims, not guaranteed results.
The names and displayed formulas are not identical across markets. Biolage UK refers to HydraSource Hydrating Shampoo and directs users to follow it with HydraSource conditioner. Sephora UK lists the conditioner as HydraSource Dry Hair Conditioner. Check the product name and directions on the package sold in your region.
What is in the formulas—and what to check before buying
Shampoo
The ingredient list on Biolage’s US shampoo page includes water, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium chloride, fragrance, aloe leaf juice, and sodium hyaluronate. If you avoid sulfates or fragrance, review the current bottle’s ingredient panel rather than relying on a listing, since formulas and ingredient disclosures can vary by market and change over time. Do the hydration claims prove it will work for you?
Biolage’s US page says its shampoo is infused with fermented aloe and micro-filtered hyaluronic acid and provides “6x more hydration after one use.” The accompanying footnote defines the comparison as Hydra Source Shampoo, Conditioning Balm, and Leave-In Tonic versus non-conditioning shampoo. That is a brand claim about a three-product routine and a stated comparison—not an independently verified result for every shopper, nor a result attributed only to the shampoo-and-conditioner pair.
Biolage UK presents a separate “up to 4x softer hair” claim and a system comparison involving shampoo and conditioning balm versus non-conditioning shampoo on sensitised hair. It is a different claim on a different market page; it should not be combined with the US hydration statement. The pages do not establish an independent population-wide result for either metric.

Is it a fit for curls, color-treated hair, or hair that feels stripped?
Curly or coily hair
Biolage’s US FAQ says, “Yes, Hydra Source is great to provide moisture to curls and coils.” Treat that as the brand’s suitability guidance, not an independent finding or a promise that every curl pattern will respond alike. If sulfates or fragrance are a concern for your routine, assess the current formula before choosing it.
Color-treated hair
Biolage’s US shampoo page says the shampoo is suitable for color-treated hair. This is the manufacturer’s guidance; the available product information does not establish how well color is preserved across different dyes, wash schedules, or hair conditions.

Hair that feels rough or stripped after washing
The US ingredient list includes sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate. The product page’s “gentle cleansing” language is Biolage’s claim and does not establish that the shampoo will feel gentle to every person. If you already know that these ingredients do not suit your hair or scalp, consider that before buying; otherwise, use the conditioner as directed and judge the feel on your own hair.

The shampoo listing has shown reviews collected as part of a promotion, another reason not to treat a displayed rating or review count as proof of typical performance.
Who may want to consider HydraSource
- Potentially a fit: Shoppers looking for a shampoo-and-conditioner routine marketed for dry hair, including shoppers with curls or color-treated hair who are comfortable relying on Biolage’s stated suitability guidance.
- Check first: Anyone avoiding sulfates or fragrance, or who needs to confirm the precise formula for their country. Ingredient lists vary by market and may change.
- Keep expectations measured: The hydration and softness figures are brand claims with specific comparison scopes, while published personal reviews describe individual experiences rather than universal results.
Biolage also includes a leave-in tonic in the US hydration comparison; Hair.com discusses a blow-dry shaping lotion. These are optional companion products with separate leave-in or styling roles, not substitutes for checking how the shampoo and conditioner fit your needs.
