It changes the policy’s terms—for example, by adding coverage, changing a limit, excluding a risk, or updating a covered person or location. Because an endorsement becomes part of the contract and may override conflicting standard policy language, read it together with the rest of your policy.
What an insurance endorsement does
An endorsement, also called a rider, modifies an insurance contract that is already in place; it is not merely an explanation of the policy. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) defines an endorsement or rider as an amendment that changes the original policy’s terms. Its glossary describes an endorsement as adjusting coverage and taking precedence over the general contract. The effect depends on the wording of the endorsement and the policy it changes.
An endorsement can broaden protection, narrow it, or make another policy-specific change. It may add coverage, revise a limit or condition, exclude a type of loss, or add or remove a person or location. The word “endorsement” does not, by itself, mean that the change is beneficial or that coverage has increased.
When an endorsement takes effect and what it may cost
An insurer may issue an endorsement when you buy a policy, during the policy term, or at renewal. The NAIC says an endorsement generally stays in force through the policy term unless it has a specific or limited term; whether it renews depends on the policy’s terms. Check the document for its effective date and any expiration date rather than assuming it lasts as long as the underlying policy.

A change can affect your premium. The NAIC says adding an endorsement typically expands coverage and can increase the premium, but the price and effect depend on the particular change and insurer. Ask the insurer or agent how the change affects your premium and whether that amount applies for the current term or at renewal.

How to review an endorsement
- Check the dates. Find the effective date and any end date or limited term. Confirm when the change begins.
- Identify exactly what changes. Compare the endorsement with the existing policy. Look for the affected coverage, limits, exclusions, conditions, people, or locations, and note whether the endorsement adds, removes, or revises terms.
- Read the interaction with the policy. Consider the endorsement alongside the policy language it changes. A heading such as “additional coverage” does not establish that every related loss is covered; limits, exclusions, conditions, and other policy terms still matter.
- Ask about unclear wording and cost. Contact your insurer or agent/representative to clarify what the change does and whether it affects the premium. The NAIC advises policyholders who receive an endorsement to compare it with the original policy and discuss the changes with their agent or representative.
- Keep the document. Store the endorsement with the policy documents so you can refer to the amended terms when reviewing your coverage or making a claim.
This is general U.S. consumer information, not an interpretation of an individual policy or state-specific legal advice. The policy and endorsement wording, as well as applicable jurisdiction, determine the coverage.
