For filing 2025 individual income tax returns, H&R Block earned our highest marks among the options considered. That is our editorial judgment—not a claim that it is best for every taxpayer. H&R Block offers online and desktop tax software, but the right choice depends on the forms your return requires, the full federal and state cost, and whether you want online or desktop filing or paid expert help.

The regular federal filing deadline was April 15, 2026. If you still need to file, are considering an amendment, or are choosing software for a future season, check current product terms and IRS guidance before acting.

Why H&R Block earned our highest marks

Our top mark reflects H&R Block’s range of consumer software options and the potential fit for filers who want a guided do-it-yourself process. The company describes both online and desktop products, as well as AI Tax Assist and tools intended to help users find forms, credits, and deductions. Those are company-described features, not independent proof of accuracy, savings, or ease of use. Our ranking is an editorial assessment; the available evidence does not establish that H&R Block is objectively best for every filer.

Before selecting any product, compare the forms it supports, the total federal-plus-state price, the filing workflow, data-import needs, and the availability and cost of expert help. Prices and offers can change, so verify the amount you will pay before filing.

Who may be able to use H&R Block for free?

H&R Block’s free online edition is intended for simple tax situations. The company lists support for Form 1040 and selected schedules and forms, while excluding itemized deductions, self-employment income, and other complex scenarios. Check the company’s current free-edition form list against your return before entering information, and confirm any upgrade charge before submitting.

A “free” label is not enough to determine whether a product fits: eligibility turns on the forms and tax situations you need to report. If your return requires a form the free edition does not support, compare the paid option’s complete federal and state cost with alternatives rather than assuming an upgrade is worthwhile.

How H&R Block compares with other tax software

TurboTax and TaxAct are other consumer options, but the available product information does not establish a universal price winner or a like-for-like total for every type of return. Use the comparison below as a checklist, then verify the current supported forms, price, and terms directly with each provider.

Option What is established What to verify for your return
H&R Block Consumer online and desktop software are available. The company describes AI Tax Assist and tools to help locate forms, credits, and deductions. Supported forms in your chosen edition; total federal and state cost; whether the workflow and any included support meet your needs.
TurboTax The company describes its free edition as limited to simple Form 1040 returns, with specified exceptions. Whether your forms qualify for the free edition, plus the full price of any upgrade and state filing.
TaxAct The company offers online products. Its page identifies a comparison basis dated April 1, 2026, and a flat-price offer for eligible consumer-prepared returns filed by October 15, 2026. Whether the offer is still available, whether your return qualifies, and the total cost for your filing situation.

These descriptions are not a controlled comparison of accuracy or ease of use. A reader survey or a product’s own feature list cannot establish that one software package will be best for every individual return.

Check IRS Free File before paying

If you are eligible, IRS Free File may provide a no-cost federal guided-software option through a participating provider. For the 2026 filing season, the IRS said eight private-sector partners offered guided software to taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. That figure is the IRS’s threshold for the program in that season; it does not establish that H&R Block participated. Check the IRS’s Free File information for provider availability and eligibility details.

Do not assume you need paid software before checking whether an IRS Free File partner supports your return. The partner list, terms, and eligibility rules apply to the relevant filing season, so confirm them directly rather than relying on a prior-year offer.

What to do if you have not filed yet

The regular deadline for 2025 individual federal income tax returns was April 15, 2026, according to the IRS. If you still need to file, use current IRS guidance for late returns and any payment due; do not treat a software product’s marketing or filing offer as tax or penalty advice. If you already filed and need to correct a return, check IRS instructions for amended returns and confirm that your chosen software supports the amendment you need.

For software research ahead of the next filing season, verify that the product covers the correct tax year. A filing-season label and the tax year of the return are not the same thing: this comparison concerns the 2026 season for 2025 income.
