Short answer: Sprout Social is the strongest full-service choice for an established business that needs publishing, approvals, a unified inbox, reporting, review management, and customer-care workflows. Buffer is the better low-cost choice for a small team that mainly needs reliable scheduling. Metricool offers exceptional value when analytics, competitor tracking, advertising, and multiple brands matter. Agencies should look first at SocialPilot or Sendible, while visual brands may prefer Later.
Businesses that mainly use Facebook and Instagram may not need a paid platform at all: Meta Business Suite is free and often sufficient. The right choice depends on your networks, number of users and brands, approval requirements, customer-care volume, reporting needs, and tolerance for manual publishing.

Quick verdict: which tool should you choose?
| If you need… | Start with… | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| A complete business social operation | Sprout Social | Publishing, approvals, unified inbox, analytics, reviews, campaign tagging, reporting, and customer-care workflows | Expensive: public annual pricing starts at $199 per seat per month for Standard |
| Enterprise publishing, listening, and governance | Hootsuite | Broad network coverage, bulk scheduling, inbox, competitor benchmarking, listening, security, and enterprise integrations | Advanced listening, compliance, and enterprise capabilities may require custom plans or add-ons |
| Simple, affordable scheduling | Buffer | Clear per-channel pricing, a useful free plan, easy publishing, analytics, AI assistance, and team approvals on Team | Per-channel billing becomes less attractive as your channel count grows |
| Analytics and multiple brands on a budget | Metricool | Scheduling, analytics, competitor tracking, ads, reporting, Google Business Profile, and integrations | X analytics and advanced analytics can cost extra; advanced reporting is plan-gated |
| Agency management at a predictable price | SocialPilot | Account-based pricing, approvals, bulk scheduling, multiple users, analytics, and white-label reports | Not a full social-listening or enterprise customer-care platform |
| Instagram, TikTok, UGC, and visual planning | Later | Visual calendar, link-in-bio, creator and UGC workflows, approvals, and visual analytics | Many Instagram-native features still require notification publishing |
| Community management for less than Sprout | Agorapulse | Unified inbox, assignments, moderation, saved replies, reporting, competitor benchmarking, and ROI analysis | Per-user pricing and shared profile limits can become costly |
| Unlimited users and separated client workspaces | Sendible | Every plan includes unlimited users and the workspace model suits agencies | No Instagram direct messages and no Google Business Profile reporting inside Sendible |
| A controlled editorial calendar | Loomly | Content ideas, previews, roles, approvals, scheduling, and client-facing calendars | Not designed as a deep listening or customer-care suite |
| CRM and help-desk integration in the Zoho ecosystem | Zoho Social | Broad channel coverage plus Zoho CRM, Zoho Desk, lead generation, approvals, and agency features | Pricing varies by region; the free edition does not support scheduling |
| One or two primary networks | Native platform tools | Free, first-party access with native features and platform-specific analytics | No unified calendar or cross-network reporting |
Recommended starting path for a typical small business: use native tools or Buffer first, move to Metricool when cross-brand analytics becomes important, and upgrade to Sprout Social or Hootsuite only when approvals, customer care, listening, governance, or integrations justify the cost. Agencies should usually evaluate SocialPilot or Sendible before paying enterprise-suite prices.

What social media management software actually includes
“Social media management” is an umbrella term. A scheduler may let you queue posts but provide little help with customer messages, brand mentions, reputation, or attribution. Before comparing logos, identify which of these jobs your business actually needs:
| Capability | What it means in practice | Who needs it most |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduling and publishing | Prepare posts in advance and publish them to one or more networks | Almost every business with a regular content calendar |
| Calendar management | See campaigns, drafts, scheduled posts, holidays, and publishing gaps in one editorial view | Teams and agencies producing content collaboratively |
| Unified inbox | Manage comments, mentions, direct messages, and sometimes reviews in one place | Businesses that receive customer questions or complaints through social channels |
| Listening and monitoring | Track keywords, brand mentions, competitors, sentiment, topics, or unusual spikes beyond owned comments | Large brands, reputation teams, PR departments, and businesses exposed to public conversation |
| Analytics and reporting | Measure reach, engagement, follower growth, video results, campaign performance, and sometimes conversions | Marketing teams, agencies, and owners making budget decisions |
| Approvals and permissions | Assign drafts, restrict access, require review, and preserve an approval trail | Agencies, regulated organizations, franchises, and multi-person teams |
| Asset governance | Store approved images, videos, captions, templates, and brand materials | Organizations with multiple contributors or locations |
| AI assistance | Generate captions, replies, alt text, ideas, summaries, or suggested posting times | Teams trying to reduce repetitive work |
| Commerce and link-in-bio | Connect social content to products, landing pages, or a customizable link page | Retail, creator, and visual brands |
| Integrations and automation | Send data to a CRM, help desk, reporting tool, API, Zapier, or other workflow | Businesses connecting social activity to sales or support operations |
| Reviews and reputation | Monitor and respond to business reviews, sometimes alongside social messages | Local businesses, hospitality, healthcare, franchises, and service companies |
| Multi-location management | Manage multiple Google Business Profiles or local accounts without losing location-level reporting | Franchises and businesses with many physical locations |
A platform that publishes to 12 networks may still be a poor choice for a customer-care team if it cannot assign messages, save replies, escalate issues, or report response times. Conversely, a sophisticated listening suite is wasteful for a solo owner who only needs next week’s posts scheduled.

1. Sprout Social: best overall for established businesses
Sprout Social is the strongest default recommendation when social media is more than a broadcasting channel. It combines publishing with a consolidated inbox, collaboration, customer care, review management, analytics, campaign tagging, URL tracking, asset libraries, bulk scheduling, competitor reports, and reporting that can connect with Google Analytics.
Current pricing
- Essentials: $79 per seat per month annually or $99 monthly, with up to five social profiles.
- Standard: $199 per seat per month annually, with five social profiles.
- Professional: $299 per seat per month annually, with unlimited social profiles.
- Advanced: $399 per seat per month annually, with unlimited social profiles.
- Enterprise: custom pricing.
Standard adds the consolidated inbox, collaboration, keyword and location monitoring, AI-generated alt text, and review management. Professional adds message tagging, competitor, tag, and paid insights, plus AI post assistance. Advanced adds AI-assisted replies, sentiment, API and help-desk integrations, customer-care reporting, and message-spike alerts. See the feature comparison for the current packaging.
Who should buy it?
Choose Sprout if customer messages, reputation, approval controls, or executive reporting are central to the business. It is especially defensible for an established company with multiple stakeholders and enough social activity to benefit from structured workflows.
Do not choose it merely to schedule a few posts. A solo business may spend hundreds of dollars monthly for capabilities it will not use. Buffer, Metricool, or a native platform suite is usually more financially sensible in that situation.
2. Hootsuite: best for enterprise-scale social operations
Hootsuite is a broad operational platform for teams managing many accounts, frequent publishing, inbox activity, competitor monitoring, and enterprise governance.
Current pricing
- Standard: $99 per user per month annually, with up to 10 social accounts.
- Professional: $199 per user per month annually, with unlimited social accounts.
- Advanced: $399 per user per month annually, with unlimited social accounts.
- Enterprise: custom pricing.
Hootsuite documents support for Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, and Pinterest on Standard, with publishing, analytics, inbox, listening, AI insights, and best-time-to-post features. Standard also includes unlimited scheduling, AI content assistance, direct-message automation, seven-day brand and competitor mention search, sentiment analysis, and benchmarking against five competitors.
Advanced adds bulk scheduling of up to 350 posts, saved replies, routing and tagging, scheduled reports, and benchmarking against 20 competitors. Enterprise adds SSO, advanced listening powered by Talkwalker, advanced analytics and inbox functions, employee advocacy, social selling, Salesforce integration, compliance integrations, and a generative AI chatbot, according to the enterprise plan documentation.
Hootsuite is usually excessive for a small business that wants a calendar. It becomes more compelling when the organization needs scale, security, listening, multiple departments, or enterprise integrations.

Buffer is the easiest recommendation for a small business that wants transparent pricing and a straightforward publishing workflow.
Current pricing
- Free: up to three channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, and one user.
- Essentials: $5 per month for one channel when billed annually. It includes unlimited scheduled posts, advanced analytics, first-comment scheduling, hashtag management, and one user.
- Team: $10 per month for one channel when billed annually. It adds unlimited team members, access levels, content approvals, advanced analytics, and the community inbox.
The free edition includes AI assistance, insights, API access, and a community inbox, but the 10-post-per-channel queue limit matters if you schedule far ahead. Paid plans have unlimited scheduled posts per channel.
Buffer lists integrations for LinkedIn, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky, YouTube, X, Google Business Profile, Instagram, Mastodon, TikTok, and Facebook. Its per-channel model is attractive for three or four channels, but the bill rises predictably with every additional network.

Buffer is not the right choice when you need deep social listening, complex customer-care case management, extensive review management, or enterprise security controls. It is the right choice when simplicity is itself a financial benefit: fewer training hours, fewer workflow complications, and a lower recurring bill.
4. Metricool: best value for analytics and multi-brand management
Metricool offers a particularly strong combination of scheduling, analytics, competitor tracking, reporting, advertising data, inbox features, Google Business Profile support, and automation access.
Current pricing
- Free: $0 for one brand, up to 20 scheduled posts per month, five competitor profiles, 30 days of analytics, AI assistance, and MCP access.
- Starter: from $25 per month, with up to 10 brands, unlimited publishing, up to 100 competitor profiles, LinkedIn connection, PDF and PowerPoint reports, and unlimited analytics history.
- Advanced: from $54 per month, with up to 50 brands, team and client management, roles, approvals, custom report templates, Looker Studio, API, and Zapier.
- Custom: tailored pricing.
Metricool supports Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bluesky, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, Twitch, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Facebook Ads, Google Ads, and TikTok Ads. X is listed as a $10-per-month add-on for each connected account, and Advanced Analytics is also an add-on.
The free plan is permanent rather than a time-limited trial, but its posting, brand, and reporting limits are substantial. Metricool is a better value than a premium suite when your main objective is understanding performance across brands rather than managing a high-volume support inbox.
5. SocialPilot: best agency value
SocialPilot is a strong agency choice because its account-based pricing can be more predictable than per-seat enterprise software.
Recommended Free Tools
Current pricing
- Essentials: $25.50 per month annually or $30 monthly, with seven social accounts, one user, and 500 AI credits.
- Standard: $42.50 per month annually or $50 monthly, with 15 accounts, three users, inbox, analytics, collaboration, and manager approval.
- Premium: $85 per month annually or $100 monthly, with 25 accounts, six users, bulk scheduling, advanced analytics, client approval, and white-label reports.
- Ultimate: $170 per month annually or $200 monthly, with 50 accounts, unlimited users, advanced security, advanced white-label features, and a dedicated account manager.
Additional accounts cost $4 per month, and additional users cost $5 per month on applicable plans. Premium is particularly attractive for a small agency with several clients and a handful of staff members.
SocialPilot’s own comparison material positions it as a publishing, management, reporting, and agency-workflow product rather than a full social-listening platform. If clients expect brand-mention monitoring, sophisticated sentiment analysis, or enterprise customer care, budget for a separate listening product or evaluate Sprout Social or Hootsuite.
6. Later: best for visual brands, Instagram, TikTok, and UGC
Later is a strong fit for ecommerce, creators, publishers, and visual brands that care about visual planning, link-in-bio pages, UGC collection, and creator workflows.
Current pricing
- Starter: $18.75 per month annually, with one social set, eight profiles, one user, 30 posts per profile, three months of analytics, link-in-bio, and five AI credits.
- Growth: $37.50 per month, with two social sets, 16 profiles, two users, 180 posts per profile, social inbox, one year of analytics, approvals, UGC collection, and 50 AI credits.
- Scale: $82.50 per month, with six social sets, 48 profiles, four users, unlimited posts, custom analytics, competitive benchmarking, brand mentions, two years of analytics, and 100 AI credits.
Supported platforms include Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Snapchat. Later’s Auto Publish documentation explains that account type and content format determine whether a post can publish automatically.

7. Agorapulse: best lower-cost community-management alternative
Agorapulse is worth considering when your priority is managing comments, messages, assignments, moderation, saved replies, and reports rather than building the largest possible publishing or listening ecosystem.
Current pricing
- Standard: $79 per user per month annually or $99 monthly.
- Professional: $119 per user per month annually or $149 monthly.
- Advanced: $149 per user per month annually or $199 monthly.
- Custom: tailored pricing.
The Standard, Professional, and Advanced plans include 10 social profile slots shared across the organization. Additional profiles cost $10 per month each annually or $15 monthly. Each additional user is charged at the same plan rate, so a growing team can become expensive quickly.
Agorapulse supports Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, TikTok, Bluesky, and Reddit. Depending on tier, features include inbox management, organic comments, reporting, assignments, saved replies, moderation rules, advanced reports, ads reports, ROI analysis, and competitor benchmarking.
The official Agorapulse pages currently conflict on trial length: the pricing page advertises 30 days, while help documentation describes 15 days. Check the signup page rather than relying on either figure.

- Full-size Sculpted Mouse: The high-definition optical USB mouse puts comfort and control in your hands with smooth, accurate tracking and an ambidextrous shape that feels good hour after hour
- Simple Set-Up: Simply plug the keyboard and mouse into the USB ports on your desktop, laptop, or netbook and you're ready to work; compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10 or later
- Clear and Convenient: The bold, bright white and long-lasting characters make the keys on this PC or laptop keyboard easy to read and extra durable
8. Sendible: best for agencies needing unlimited users
Sendible organizes agency work through workspaces. Core includes one workspace, Plus three, Premium seven, Elite 15, and Enterprise 50. Each workspace includes six social profiles, and all plans include unlimited users.
It supports Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, YouTube, WordPress, Threads, and Bluesky. Features include publishing, content calendars, reports, monitoring, approvals on higher plans, and separated client or brand workspaces.
Important limitations are easy to miss: Sendible does not support Instagram direct messages; Google Business Profile posts can be scheduled but reporting is not available in Sendible; Instagram video carousels may require notification reminders; and daily posting limits apply to comply with network policies.
Sendible is compelling when several employees or contractors need access without separate seat charges. It is less compelling for a customer-care operation that depends on Instagram DMs or for an organization seeking deep social listening.
9. Loomly: best editorial calendar and approval workflow
Loomly is designed around content calendars, post planning, ideas, previews, roles, scheduling, approvals, and analytics. It is a good fit for a business where the hardest part is getting content reviewed and published consistently.
- Starter: $49 per month annually or $65 monthly, with 12 social accounts, three users, unlimited calendars, AI assistance, approvals, roles, scheduling, and advanced analytics.
- Beyond: $249 per month annually or $332 monthly, with 60 accounts and unlimited users, plus custom branding, custom roles, workflows, hashtag management, and calendar security.
- Enterprise: custom pricing for 61 or more accounts.
Loomly is less suitable when the central requirement is deep listening, complex customer-care routing, or enterprise reputation management. Choose it for editorial control, not because it is the most comprehensive social-operations suite.
10. Zoho Social: best for businesses already using Zoho
Zoho Social is most attractive when the business already uses Zoho CRM or Zoho Desk and wants social activity connected to those systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIts plans include Free, Standard, Professional, Premium, Agency, and Agency Plus. Depending on plan, it supports Facebook Pages, X, Instagram Business Profiles, LinkedIn profiles and company pages, Google Business Profile, YouTube, Pinterest, TikTok, Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky, WhatsApp Business, and Telegram Business.
Higher plans add bulk scheduling, inbox features, approvals, custom reports, roles, UTM parameters, Zoho CRM and Zoho Desk integration, lead generation, client portals, and agency reporting. Zoho states that pricing varies by region. Its help documentation also says the free edition does not support scheduling, so do not assume that “Free” means a free queueing tool.
Automatic publishing: the feature most comparison pages explain badly
A tool’s claim that it “supports Instagram” or “supports TikTok” does not mean that every post type can be published automatically. Platform APIs restrict what third-party software can do.
Automatic versus notification publishing
- Automatic publishing: the management tool sends the post to the network without a person completing the final step.
- Notification publishing: the tool sends the copy and media to a phone. A person opens the native Instagram or TikTok app, adds restricted native features, and taps Publish.
Instagram automatic publishing generally requires a professional Business or Creator account. Personal accounts cannot use automatic publishing in Buffer, and Later documents the same professional-account requirement. Buffer also lists music, Story links, product tags, collaboration posts, topics, unsupported aspect ratios, and some Reel lengths as reasons a post may require notification publishing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Later documents similar restrictions for Instagram music, stickers, polls, quizzes, links, effects, and some audio. Metricool documents comparable restrictions involving Instagram Stories, Reels, TikTok effects, music, stickers, and other native features. In other words, the more you rely on platform-native interactive elements, the less useful a completely hands-off queue becomes.
What to do when a scheduled post does not publish
- Check whether the item is marked automatic, notification, failed, queued, or sent.
- Confirm that push notifications are enabled for the management tool.
- Open the tool’s mobile app and complete the native publishing step.
- Add restricted music, stickers, links, polls, or effects inside the native app.
- Verify the post on the social network itself; “notification sent” is not proof of publication.
- Check the account connection if no notification arrived.
Metricool says that once a manual-publishing notification has been sent, the post cannot simply be converted to automatic publishing. Its recommended recovery is to duplicate the post, enable automatic publishing on the duplicate, and remove any networks where the original was already published. See Metricool’s recovery guidance.
How much should you budget?
The advertised entry price is rarely the price your business will pay. Compare seats, channels, profiles, brands, workspaces, reporting add-ons, listening, white-label features, and annual commitments.

Illustrative U.S. annual-billing scenarios
These examples use public prices and simple arithmetic. They are not equivalent feature bundles. A $42.50 plan with approvals is not necessarily comparable with a $199 plan that includes listening or enterprise controls.

| Five-person operation with about 25 profiles, approvals, and advanced operations | Do not choose on price alone; Metricool Advanced starts at $54 but is not equivalent to an enterprise care suite | Sprout Advanced or Hootsuite Advanced work out to about $1,995 for five seats before custom add-ons; enterprise plans may be required | Talkwalker listening, SSO, compliance, help-desk integrations, support, and contract terms can materially change the total |
For a multi-location business, count locations separately. Metricool treats each Google Business Profile location as a separate brand, while combined reporting can be built through Looker Studio on Advanced. Sendible supports scheduling Google Business Profile posts but says reporting must be accessed natively.
Financial checks before signing an annual contract
- Multiply the monthly price by 12 and include tax, extra seats, extra profiles, and add-ons.
- Ask whether “unlimited” excludes users, reports, historical data, API calls, AI credits, or fair-use volume.
- Price the plan at your expected channel count six and 12 months from now, not only today’s count.
- Estimate the labor saved by approvals, scheduling, reporting, and inbox routing; do not assign value to AI copy alone.
- Confirm what happens to scheduled content, historical reports, tags, and UTM structures if you cancel.
- Check whether annual billing is refundable and whether a downgrade preserves your data.
Free native tools versus paid software
Paid software becomes valuable when you need a unified cross-network workflow. It is not automatically better than a first-party tool for publishing to one platform.
Meta Business Suite
Meta Business Suite lets Page managers create, schedule, edit, reschedule, duplicate, draft, and delete Facebook Page posts. The documented scheduling window for that Facebook Page workflow is 20 minutes to 29 days ahead. Meta also describes Business Suite as a central place for Facebook and Instagram publishing, messages, notifications, and insights.
Use it if Facebook and Instagram are your main channels. It does not replace a cross-network calendar, consolidated LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, or Pinterest reporting, broad listening, or agency client workflows.

TikTok Business Center centralizes accounts, assets, permissions, teams, partners, campaigns, and analytics. It is a sensible free foundation for a TikTok-first brand, advertiser, or creator-campaign team.
LinkedIn Page admin
LinkedIn Page admin supports post creation, scheduling up to three months ahead, comments and mentions, Page messages where available, and content, follower, visitor, lead, competitor, and search analytics. A B2B business focused primarily on LinkedIn may not need a paid suite.
YouTube Studio
YouTube Studio is YouTube’s central hub for content management, analytics, and community. It is the natural choice for a video-first business whose main social operation is YouTube.
How to choose in 15 minutes
- List the required networks. Include Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, X, Threads, Bluesky, Google Business Profile, Snapchat, Reddit, WhatsApp, or Telegram as relevant. Do not pay for broad coverage you will not use.
- List the exact formats. Feed posts, Reels, Stories, carousels, first comments, product tags, mentions, music, stickers, polls, links, DMs, comment replies, and analytics are separate capabilities.
- Count users, brands, locations, and profiles. A tool may charge by seat, channel, profile, brand, or workspace. These units are not interchangeable.
- Decide whether customer care is part of the job. If you need assignments, moderation, saved replies, escalation, or response-time reporting, prioritize an inbox rather than a scheduler.
- Decide whether you need listening. Owned comments and messages are not the same as monitoring public brand mentions, keywords, competitors, sentiment, or crisis spikes.
- Define the approval process. Simple draft approval is different from external client review, role-based access, audit trails, legal review, and records retention.
- Choose your reporting source of truth. Use the management platform for cross-network trends and workflow reporting; use native analytics when a platform-specific metric matters.
- Check integrations. CRM, help desk, Google Analytics, Looker Studio, API, Zapier, Make, MCP, DAM, SSO, and employee advocacy may determine the right product.
- Test manual publishing. Decide who will finish a Reel or Story when native audio, stickers, links, polls, or effects are required.
- Calculate the 12-month cost. Include additional users, profiles, listening, analytics, white-label reports, API access, tax, and annual-billing commitments.
Recommended scoring rubric
Use this weighting to compare finalists rather than allowing an impressive feature list or an AI demo to decide the purchase:

| Analytics and reporting | 15% | Native metrics, export formats, scheduled reports, competitor data, UTM and ROI support |
| Network coverage | 10% | Required networks, account types, formats, business-profile support, paid and organic coverage |

| Security and integrations | 5% | SSO, API, CRM, help desk, DAM, Zapier, Make, MCP, least-privilege access |
These weights are an editorial framework, not an industry standard. Change them if your business is primarily a support operation, an agency, a franchise, or a content studio.
Testing checklist before subscribing
Use a trial or demo to test your actual workflow, not just the dashboard. Create:
- One image post customized for two networks
- One Reel or TikTok video
- One carousel
- One Story containing a native element such as music, a sticker, poll, or link
- One approval requiring another person to review and reject or edit it
- One inbox assignment and saved reply
- One UTM-tagged link
- One scheduled report export
- One deliberately unsupported post to see how clearly the platform explains the failure
Measure the time required to prepare the content, whether each platform’s caption can be customized, how clearly failed posts are reported, whether approvals leave a usable history, and whether the exported report contains the fields your business actually uses.
Common failure modes and fixes
An account connection expired or was revoked
Connections can break after a password change, administrator change, altered Business Manager permissions, revoked app access, or a change in the relationship between a Page and its business account.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the management tool’s account or connection settings.
- Reauthorize the affected network.
- Confirm that the correct Page, Business Manager, or professional account is selected.
- Check that the connecting user still has the required administrator permission.
- Publish a small test post natively and through the tool.
- Review future scheduled posts for failed, draft, or notification status.
The tool says a post was sent, but it never appeared
“Sent,” “queued,” and “notification sent” do not necessarily mean “published.” Check whether a human was required to finish the post in the native app. If so, enable push notifications, complete the native workflow, and verify publication on the network itself.

Native audio, stickers, or interactive elements are missing
Do not assume a third-party tool can add platform-native music, stickers, polls, quizzes, links, or effects after scheduling. These elements commonly trigger notification publishing. Build a human completion step into the calendar and assign ownership.
Cross-posted copy looks wrong
A single caption is rarely ideal everywhere. Review character limits, link behavior, hashtags, image dimensions, video duration, mentions, tagging, first-comment support, and calls to action. Metricool’s current character-limit reference illustrates how much these limits vary across Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, Google Business Profile, and YouTube.
Third-party reports do not match native analytics
Differences are normal because networks change metric definitions, APIs expose different fields, data arrives on different schedules, paid and organic activity may be separated differently, and historical data may be limited after connection. Stories, Reels, ads, and deleted posts may also be handled differently. Use native analytics as the source of truth for platform-specific performance and the management tool for cross-network trends, campaign tags, and workflow reporting.
A feature is missing even though the product says the network is supported
The network may expose publishing but not inbox management, images but not video, feed posts but not Stories, scheduling but not direct publishing, or basic reporting but not historical or paid data. This is often an API limitation rather than a software defect. Metricool’s API limitation guide is a useful example of the format-by-format distinctions buyers should ask about.
What common comparison articles get wrong
- They mix categories. Scheduling tools, social suites, listening platforms, review-management products, content creators, and analytics products are not always direct substitutes.
- They repeat vendor rankings as independent judgments. Sprout Social and Buffer publish useful product information, but vendor-authored “best” lists should be attributed rather than treated as neutral testing.
- They treat review directories as buying guides. G2’s category criteria and verified reviews provide market sentiment, but do not determine the best tool for your price, format, platform, or workflow.
- They count network logos instead of capabilities. “Supports Instagram” is incomplete without account type, format, publishing method, inbox coverage, and analytics coverage.
- They hide the real bill. Entry prices may assume one user, one channel, one brand, annual billing, no approvals, no reports, no listening, and no client access.
- They ignore native tools. A business using only Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, or YouTube may be well served by the official platform tools.
- They oversell AI. AI captions are easy to replicate. Reliable publishing, permissions, reporting, customer care, security, and integrations usually matter more to the financial return of the subscription.
Final recommendation by business type
Solo owner or very small business
Choose Buffer for simple, low-cost scheduling. Choose Metricool if analytics, competitors, Google Business Profile, or multiple brands matter more. Start with Meta Business Suite if Facebook and Instagram are your main channels. Avoid Sprout Social or Hootsuite unless you can identify a specific customer-care, reporting, or governance requirement that pays for the difference.
Small in-house marketing team
Shortlist Buffer Team, Metricool Advanced, Later Growth, Loomly Starter, SocialPilot Standard, and Agorapulse Standard or Professional. Pick Buffer or Loomly for calendar simplicity, Metricool for analytics, Later for visual content, Agorapulse for inbox work, and SocialPilot for budget-conscious collaboration.
Agency or freelancer
Start with SocialPilot, Sendible, Metricool Advanced, Agorapulse, Loomly, and Later Growth or Scale for visual clients. Prioritize client workspaces, approval links, white-label reports, profile-based billing, user limits, and whether listening requires a second product.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Enterprise or regulated organization
Shortlist Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Agorapulse Custom, and Zoho Social Premium or Agency if your organization already uses Zoho. Require SSO, role-based permissions, approval and audit trails, data export, customer-care integrations, crisis controls, listening and spike alerts, legal review, contractual support, and onboarding. A custom plan is not automatically enterprise-ready; verify the controls.
Local or multi-location business
Prioritize Google Business Profile coverage, location-level permissions, review management, consolidated reporting, and the ability to preserve detail for each location. Metricool, Zoho Social, Sprout Social, and native Google tools should be compared carefully. Confirm whether each location counts as a brand, profile, workspace, or add-on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is social media management software worth paying for?
It is usually worth paying for when your business needs cross-network scheduling, approvals, client access, unified customer messages, recurring reports, listening, or CRM and help-desk integrations. If you mainly publish to Facebook and Instagram, Meta Business Suite may provide enough functionality for free.
What is the cheapest good social media management tool in 2026?
Buffer has the clearest low-cost starting point: its free plan supports up to three channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel, while Essentials starts at $5 per channel per month on annual billing. Metricool also has a permanent free plan, but its one-brand, 20-post-per-month, and limited analytics rules are different.
Can these tools automatically publish Instagram and TikTok posts?
Sometimes. Instagram automatic publishing generally requires a professional Business or Creator account, and native elements such as music, stickers, polls, quizzes, links, and effects often require notification publishing. Always test the exact format you use rather than relying on a network logo or a general auto-publishing claim.
Should a business use one tool for every social network?
Not necessarily. A native tool may be best for a platform-specific feature, while a paid suite can handle the calendar, approvals, reporting, and inbox. Many businesses use a hybrid stack: native tools for platform-specific publishing and one management platform for cross-network operations.
The Bottom Line
Choose Sprout Social when social is a serious publishing, customer-care, reputation, and reporting operation. Choose Buffer when you want the simplest affordable scheduler. Choose Metricool for analytics and multiple brands, SocialPilot for predictable agency workflows, Later for visual and UGC-heavy content, and Hootsuite when enterprise scale, listening, governance, and integrations matter. If you use only one or two networks, start with their native free tools and spend money only when the workflow—not merely the calendar—has outgrown them.
