In the US, Apple’s current iPhone 17 range, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 promotions, carrier trade-in offers, unlocked phones, and certified-renewed models all compete for your money. The lowest realistic cost comes from comparing the phone price, trade-in value, plan requirement, taxes, fees, and the time you must remain with a carrier.
As of August 18, 2026, the Galaxy Z Fold5 is primarily an older refurbished or renewed option—not Samsung’s current flagship foldable. Samsung and carriers are promoting newer Fold models, while Samsung still lists the Fold5 through its Certified Re-Newed program.

Apple direct is a sensible starting point if you want a straightforward purchase, prefer manufacturer support, or do not want to change carriers. However, do not assume Apple’s headline credit is the cheapest option. A carrier may offer more, but only by requiring a new line, a more expensive unlimited plan, or 24- or 36-month bill credits.
Best iPhone value: consider the standard model or iPhone 17e
Readers who do not need a Pro camera system should compare the standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17e with the Pro models. A lower purchase price can outweigh a larger promotional credit on a more expensive phone, particularly when the carrier plan would cost more over the required term.
For a previous-generation or refurbished iPhone, compare the warranty, battery condition, return window, storage, and whether the device is unlocked. A lower sticker price is not a bargain if the phone has uncertain condition or limited support.
Best Samsung Galaxy deals
Best current foldable deal: Galaxy Z Fold8, subject to the plan math
Samsung’s current foldable promotions focus on newer models. Samsung’s official phone-offers page advertises up to $1,000 in selected instant trade-in savings, although the exact model and offer must be confirmed on the live page.
Carrier promotions can advertise more. August coverage reported a T-Mobile offer of up to $1,900 off the Galaxy Z Fold8 with a qualifying trade-in, a new line, and the Experience Beyond plan. That is not equivalent to a $1,900 instant discount: the value is tied to eligibility and promotional bill credits. It is most relevant to a new customer who already wants that premium plan and can remain with T-Mobile for the full credit period.

Samsung direct may be better if you already have an inexpensive wireless plan, want an unlocked device, or do not want your savings dependent on future carrier bills. T-Mobile may be better if you already intend to add a line and the required plan would not increase your wireless cost materially.
Best older foldable: Galaxy Z Fold5 Certified Re-Newed
The Galaxy Z Fold5 can still make sense, but only as a value purchase. Samsung lists a Certified Re-Newed Fold5 listing, and its Certified Re-Newed program advertises a one-year limited manufacturer warranty.

Its case is strongest when the renewed price is clearly below newer Fold models and the buyer values the tablet-sized inner display more than the latest processor, cameras, battery efficiency, hinge design, and remaining support life.
Other Samsung options
A conventional Galaxy S-series phone is usually the lower-risk choice for shoppers who want Samsung software and cameras without a folding display. Galaxy Z Flip models suit readers who want a compact foldable rather than a phone that opens into a small tablet. Compare their total cost with the Fold8 and Fold5 renewed—not just the trade-in headline.
Best carrier deals by situation
For an existing customer
Start with your current carrier. An upgrade promotion can be attractive when you already have the required plan and would stay for the entire installment period. It is less attractive when the offer requires adding a line or moving from a low-cost plan to a premium tier.

AT&T’s deal pages advertise some phones at $0 per month after an eligible trade-in, but the selected plan, phone, trade-in, and installment terms determine whether the offer applies. Verizon’s marketplace includes Apple and Samsung trade-in offers, certified pre-owned devices, and carrier-specific promotions.

A switcher can benefit from a large trade-in or port-in incentive, but calculate the cost of the new plan separately. A phone that is free after credits can still cost more than buying unlocked if the new service is substantially more expensive for the required 36 months.
For a new line
New-line offers deserve special scrutiny. Add the line’s monthly cost for every month required by the promotion. If you would not otherwise need that line, it is part of the phone’s cost—not a free bonus.
For a lower-cost-plan shopper
Check unlocked phones, certified pre-owned models, and lower-priced current models first. Google Fi advertises up to $1,310 off selected Samsung Galaxy Z Series phones and separate Pixel promotions, but compare the required Fi service and eligibility rules with major-carrier pricing. Spectrum Mobile also advertises phone discounts, including examples involving iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S26 Ultra, tied to its mobile eligibility requirements.
Unlocked versus carrier financing
Buy unlocked when you change carriers often, already have a low-cost plan, lack a high-value trade-in, want to resell the device, or want to avoid bill-credit lock-in. Confirm that “unlocked” means unlocked at purchase; do not assume every carrier-financed device is unlocked immediately.

Use carrier financing when you already plan to keep the carrier, already use the required plan, qualify for the full trade-in amount, and can remain through the entire credit period. Carrier financing can produce the lowest phone cost, but only under those conditions.

Use two calculations rather than treating every discount as the same:
Effective phone cost = upfront payment + installment payments + taxes and fees − trade-in credit − promotional credits
Total ownership cost = effective phone cost + incremental service-plan cost during the required term
“Incremental” matters. If you would keep the same plan regardless of the purchase, do not charge the entire plan to the phone. If a promotion requires a more expensive plan or a new line, include that additional cost.

What every deal comparison should show
- Phone MSRP and current selling price
- Upfront payment and monthly device payment
- Installment length—often 24 or 36 months
- Monthly bill credit and when credits begin
- Required trade-in model, condition, and value
- Required service plan and whether a new line or port-in is needed
- Activation, upgrade, connection, taxes, and other fees
- Whether the phone is unlocked
- What happens to credits if you pay off the device or leave early
- Warranty, return period, stock, storage, and condition
Worked example using placeholders
Suppose a phone has a $1,800 retail price, a $500 trade-in credit, and $1,300 in promotional credits paid over 36 months. The advertised device payment may become $0 per month after credits, but the credits are conditional. Add any upfront taxes, activation fee, and the extra cost of the required plan. If leaving after 12 months causes the remaining credits to stop, compare the unpaid device balance with the amount you would save by switching carriers.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold5 worth buying in 2026?
Yes, if it is substantially cheaper than a newer Fold, comes from a credible seller, includes meaningful warranty coverage, and passes a careful inspection. Otherwise, compare the price with the current Fold8 or a conventional Galaxy S-series phone.
For a renewed or used Fold5, inspect the inner display for dead pixels, lines, discoloration, touch failures, and an abnormal crease. Check that the hinge moves smoothly and the phone closes flat. Also inspect the screen protector, frame, USB-C port, battery information, IMEI or blacklist status, carrier lock, warranty, and return window.
Do not assume a renewed Fold5 has the same water-resistance expectations, battery condition, support life, or mechanical reliability as a new current-generation foldable. Foldable screens and hinges introduce risks that are less relevant to conventional slab phones.
Trade-in and “free phone” pitfalls
Maximum trade-in values generally apply only to a narrow list of premium devices. Cracked screens, swollen batteries, missing components, disabled accounts, blacklisted phones, or a device that fails inspection can reduce or eliminate the credit. Some offers also require the old phone to be shipped by a deadline.
Before shipping a trade-in:
- Back up your data and authenticate the replacement device.
- Photograph the phone’s condition, serial number, and IMEI.
- Remove accounts and security locks.
- Factory-reset the phone.
- Use tracked shipping and retain the receipt.
- Save the trade-in confirmation and inspection result.
Samsung’s surfaced trade-in terms require, among other conditions, that the device power on, hold a charge, have a functioning display, be free of prohibited damage, be removed from user accounts, and be factory-reset.
Finally, “free” usually means free after promotional bill credits. Taxes may be charged on the full retail price, and activation or upgrade fees may apply. Credits can stop if you cancel service, leave the carrier, or sometimes pay off the phone early. A premium streaming bundle may be worth less to you than a smaller direct discount.

- Choose iOS? Compare Apple direct, your current carrier, and the standard iPhone 17 or iPhone 17e before considering a Pro model.
- Want a tablet-sized foldable? Compare the Fold8’s current promotions with the Fold5 renewed price and warranty.
- Want flexibility? Buy unlocked and avoid long promotional-credit periods.
- Already on a premium carrier plan? Check upgrade offers, but verify that you do not need a new line.
- No valuable trade-in? Ignore deals whose headline price depends on one; compare unlocked, refurbished, and lower-priced models.
- May switch carriers soon? Avoid promotions that require years of bill credits unless the remaining balance and forfeited credits are acceptable.

- Confirm the exact model, storage, color, and condition.
- Verify the displayed price and stock status—not an old search-result snippet.
- Read the trade-in eligibility and inspection rules.
- Calculate taxes, activation fees, and any new-line cost.
- Confirm the credit period and early-cancellation consequences.
- Check whether the phone is unlocked now or later.
- Record the return deadline and warranty provider.
- Recheck the offer immediately before ordering; carrier and retailer promotions can change without notice.
