- List what you need to store. Small accessories, folded clothes, pantry goods, cleaning supplies, and bulky seasonal items call for different formats.
- Measure the space. Record the usable width, depth, and height, including any door, drawer, or walkway clearance that affects access.
- Choose how you want to reach the contents. A lidded bin hides and groups items; an open shelf keeps them visible; a drawer separates small things; a hanging organizer uses vertical space.
- Check material and capacity. Walmart describes plastic as wipe-clean, metal or wire as options for heavier utility storage, and wood or fabric as softer-looking choices. For shelving, look at the individual listing’s load limit and distribute weight accordingly.
- Consider visibility and placement. Clear containers make contents easier to see, while opaque baskets or boxes can look tidier in open rooms. Stackable designs may use vertical space, but only if the stack fits and remains accessible.

Heavy-duty totes, wire racks, metal shelving, and rolling carts are formats Walmart recommends considering for garages and utility spaces. Before using shelving for heavier supplies, check the exact product listing for its stated load capacity; do not assume every rack or shelf can carry the same weight.
