Amazon said it would not display tariff charges beside product prices after reports described a proposal to do so. The company clarified that its main site was never under consideration; a team working on Amazon Haul had discussed the idea for certain products, but it was never approved. President Donald Trump later praised Amazon founder Jeff Bezos after speaking with him about the report.
What Amazon was reported to be considering
Punchbowl News first reported, citing an anonymous source, that Amazon would show how much of a product’s listed price came from tariffs. The Associated Press described the reported proposal as a tariff-cost figure displayed beside the total price. The report was not an Amazon announcement, and it did not establish that a feature had gone live. The Associated Press’s account later relayed Amazon’s clarification.
What Amazon clarified about its main site and Haul
Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle told the Associated Press that the main Amazon site was never being considered for the display. The company acknowledged a narrower internal discussion: the team responsible for Amazon Haul, its low-cost storefront, had considered listing import charges on certain products. Doyle said the idea “was never approved and is not going to happen.”
That distinction matters: a limited proposal discussed by the Haul team was not an approved policy, a change to Amazon’s main product listings, or a live feature. The Associated Press characterized the White House’s initial reaction as appearing to rest on a misinterpretation of internal plans.

How the White House and Trump responded
The White House reacted to the report before Amazon issued its clarification. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the reported move a “hostile and political act,” according to PBS NewsHour. Her comment addressed the reported proposal; it was not confirmation that Amazon had announced or implemented a tariff display.
Trump called Bezos after the report and later spoke positively about him in public. Axios quoted Trump saying, “Jeff Bezos was very nice – he was terrific. He solved the problem very quickly.” Trump also said Bezos “did the right thing … a good guy.” Axios’s account attributes those remarks to Trump. The public comments show that Trump praised Bezos after the call, but they do not establish the private details of the conversation or prove that the call caused Amazon’s decision.

What the episode does—and does not—show about prices
The episode concerned a proposed way of displaying import charges, not a confirmed Amazon price increase. The available accounts do not show that Amazon added a tariff surcharge to listed prices or changed its main-site pricing because of the report. A proposed price breakdown and a change in the amount a shopper pays are different claims; the reports support the former as an unapproved Haul discussion, not the latter.
The central news cycle took place on April 29, 2025. It should be read as a historical episode, not as evidence of Amazon’s current pricing or tariff-display policy.
