A standing kick scooter that folds for a train commute is a different purchase from a seated scooter built for faster road travel. Choose by your route, local rules, need to carry the scooter, and the distance you can realistically cover—not by the largest range number on a product page.
First, choose the right kind of scooter
“Electric scooter” can mean a standing kick scooter or a larger, seated scooter. Their speeds, legal classifications, weight, and range claims are not directly comparable. This guide covers both, but treat each model’s advertised range as a claim for that model rather than as a head-to-head test.
- Standing kick scooter: Often a practical fit for a commute that includes carrying the scooter or combining it with transit. Weight, folding, tires, ride comfort, and local rules matter alongside range.
- Seated scooter: A different vehicle class and riding experience. Check the exact model and regional version, as well as licensing and road-use requirements, before comparing it with a kick scooter.
For either type, make your own shortlist around the complete trip: the return journey, hills, stops, expected weather, and the speed you intend to ride.
How to judge range for your own route
Advertised range is not a promise of how far a particular rider will travel. Segway says the MAX G3 E’s range may vary with load, ambient temperature, road conditions, speed, tire pressure, and riding habits, including acceleration and deceleration. Those factors are useful questions to ask about any range figure, even when another manufacturer’s claim uses different conditions.

The difference between a catalogue figure and a reported ride can be substantial. Tom’s Guide lists 50 miles as the Segway Ninebot MAX G3’s advertised range, but reports around 20 miles during hilly, top-speed day-to-day riding. That is Tom’s Guide’s model-specific account under those conditions, not a universal result or a promise for your route.
- Measure the whole trip. Add the outbound and return distance, plus any regular detours.
- Compare conditions, not just numbers. Look for information about rider load, terrain, speed, temperature, and road surface. A figure obtained under conditions unlike yours is a weak basis for planning.
- Leave a buffer. Avoid choosing a scooter whose advertised maximum barely covers your round trip. Your route and riding conditions may reduce usable distance.
- Plan charging. Check whether you can conveniently charge at home or work, and whether the stated charging time fits your routine.
Models to compare—and what their figures mean
The examples below span two scooter categories and different kinds of evidence. Manufacturer range figures are not independent test results, and Tom’s Guide’s reported ride is not a uniform comparison against the other models.

Battery and charging: useful, but not a range calculator
Watt-hours (Wh) describe battery capacity, while charging time helps you judge day-to-day convenience. Neither number alone establishes how far you will travel: that depends on the scooter and riding conditions as well as the battery.

A long-range scooter can be a poor commuter choice if it is too awkward to carry or charge where you need it. Tom’s Guide lists the MAX G3 at 54.2 lb and notes carrying it as a drawback. If you must lift a scooter onto transit or up stairs, try to assess its weight and folded size in person or from a reliable listing before purchase.

Also compare tire type, suspension or other ride-comfort features, braking, and speed. If a model has pneumatic tires, confirm its required pressure and maintenance needs; a portable inflator is relevant only if it suits that tire and specification. A helmet is sensible protective gear, but check local requirements and the helmet’s suitability rather than assuming one product or standard fits every rider.
Check legality, service, and total cost before buying
Road rules and licensing requirements vary by location and vehicle class, and the available information here does not establish rules for any particular city or country. Check your local transport authority’s current guidance for the exact scooter type, speed, and intended roads. Confirm current local listings and the precise model variant; availability and prices can differ by market.
- Service: Ask whether authorized service is available near you and whether the shop handles your exact model.
- Parts and warranty: Confirm parts stock, warranty coverage, exclusions, and who performs repairs before relying on the scooter for a frequent commute.
- Total purchase cost: Compare current local prices and account for the equipment or maintenance your chosen model actually requires.
NIU describes registered service stations, and Kaabo provides dealer and support channels. Those resources do not verify that service is available in your town; check the manufacturer or dealer directly.
Which model makes sense for which rider?
- Consider the MAX G3 E if you want a standing kick scooter and its regional version, size, and weight suit your commute. Treat 50 miles as Tom’s Guide’s listed advertised figure, not as a guaranteed trip distance.
- Compare the Kaabo Skywalker options if you are shopping among standing scooters and want to examine the manufacturer’s 45 km, 55 km, and 65 km maximum claims for the 8S, 10C, and 10H respectively. Verify the exact battery configuration and local support.
- Consider the NIU NQiX 300 only if a seated scooter fits your needs and local rules. Its approximately 120 km catalogue claim, dual batteries, and 80 km/h top speed describe a different category from a standing kick scooter.
- Use Apollo’s battery table when charging logistics and capacity are important comparison points; do not use those figures alone to select a range winner.
Before committing, compare your round-trip distance with credible range information for your conditions, decide whether you can carry and charge the scooter, and verify rules, warranty, parts, and service for your exact model and location.
