The $200 million-plus opening-weekend projection for Wicked: For Good referred to its worldwide box office—not North America alone. A November 19, 2025 report by Hypebeast, citing Deadline, put the forecast at more than $125 million to $150 million in the United States and Canada, plus more than $70 million internationally. The eventual opening was reported at a higher global figure, but the forecasts and results need to be compared by geography and reporting stage.
What the $200 million projection meant
The headline figure was a pre-release worldwide forecast. Hypebeast’s November 19, 2025 report, citing Deadline, described a North American range of more than $125 million to $150 million and an international contribution above $70 million, together supporting an opening above $200 million globally. That is different from saying the film was expected to earn $200 million in the United States and Canada. Other pre-release coverage focused on North America and gave its own ranges.

Variety compared its projected North American launch with the original Wicked’s $112.5 million domestic opening. Those figures are forecasts, not a single agreed-upon prediction: outlets used different ranges, and Boxoffice Pro kept its upside case separate from its official range. What the film actually opened to
The Associated Press reported Universal’s Sunday studio estimate as $150 million in North America and $226 million worldwide. The AP described the worldwide result as the biggest opening for a Broadway musical adaptation and, at that point, the year’s second-biggest debut. This was an early studio estimate, not the same reporting stage as a later database listing. Read the AP’s report.
The Numbers later lists the domestic opening weekend at $147,004,640 across 4,115 opening theaters, with a domestic release date of November 21, 2025. That is the database’s listed domestic total, not the AP’s Sunday studio estimate of $150 million. See The Numbers’ listing.

For an apples-to-apples reading, compare the worldwide forecast above $200 million with the AP’s $226 million worldwide Sunday estimate. For North America, compare the outlet-specific domestic forecasts with the AP’s $150 million North American Sunday estimate, while keeping The Numbers’ later domestic listing distinct. A forecast is not a final gross, and an early studio estimate is not interchangeable with a later database total.
Why the opening drew attention
Wicked: For Good is the conclusion to the story of the witches of Oz, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring returning leads Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The opening’s significance is best stated in the terms reported at the time: the AP characterized its $226 million worldwide Sunday estimate as a record opening for a Broadway musical adaptation. That benchmark is about the reported worldwide opening, not the film’s lifetime box office.

Universal announced digital purchase and rental availability starting December 30, 2025, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions starting January 20, 2026. The announced home edition includes two versions of the film, an exclusive sing-along, and more than an hour of bonus features, including deleted scenes and a making-of feature. The official film site also promotes digital, 4K UHD, and Blu-ray editions.
