There is no single best kids’ backpack for every student: the right choice depends on the child’s frame, school load and ability to use the bag. For toddlers and preschoolers, BabyGearLab’s 2025 review highlights the Bentgo Kids Backpack and Simple Modern Toddler Backpack, with the VASCHY Preschool Backpack as a budget-friendly option. For elementary-age children, Good Housekeeping’s 2025–2026 guide names the L.L.Bean Original Book Pack its overall pick and the Bansusu Geometric Print Backpack its value pick. These are different publications’ assessments, not a shared ranking.

Best backpacks by age and use

Age labels and capacity can help narrow the options, but they do not replace trying a loaded pack on the child. AAP guidance is to choose a backpack proportional to the child’s height; a bag that is too large can make it easier to carry unnecessary weight.

Toddlers and preschoolers

  • Bentgo Kids Backpack: BabyGearLab named it best overall in its 2025 review for toddlers through preschoolers. It describes padded shoulder straps, a cushioned back, adjustable chest clip, water-resistant fabric, tablet sleeve, front pockets and mesh bottle pockets. The review cautions that it may be too small for elementary-age children, the mesh pockets may wear sooner than some competitors’ and the lunch-bag loop may be awkward for young children. See BabyGearLab’s review.
  • Simple Modern Toddler Backpack: BabyGearLab calls it a favorite for toddlers. The review describes medium 12-liter and large 18-liter versions, a structured shape, easy-clean materials, front pockets and side pockets. See BabyGearLab’s review.
  • VASCHY Preschool Backpack: BabyGearLab says its tested small size suits preschoolers and kindergarteners and has padded straps and a chest strap. Its simpler organization may not work as well for older students; a larger size is also available. See BabyGearLab’s review.

Elementary-age children

  • L.L.Bean Original Book Pack: Good Housekeeping named it best overall in its July 2025 guide for the 2025–2026 school year. The guide describes a 24-liter standard size intended for ages six and up and a 17-liter Junior size. It highlights durability, lightweight construction, padded straps and back, reflective strips and machine washability; it notes there are no chest or waist straps and no laptop sleeve. See Good Housekeeping’s guide.
  • Bansusu Geometric Print Backpack: Good Housekeeping’s value pick comes in 19-liter and 25-liter versions and has a padded laptop sleeve and two bottle pockets. The guide notes it has no chest or waist straps. Its ranking is specific to that publication’s 2025–2026 guide. See Good Housekeeping’s guide.
  • BLUEFAIRY Kids Backpack: BabyGearLab describes it as spacious and lightweight, with multiple pockets and two bottle pockets. Its review says the pack feels softer and more flexible than some alternatives, but flags a less refined finish and possible zipper-durability concerns. See BabyGearLab’s review.

For a family-tested option

NBC Select’s August 2026 article reports that a parent and five-year-old tested backpacks at home. The author says the STATE Kane Backpack is sized for ages four to eight, has 15-liter capacity, adjustable straps and several internal organizers. Treat this as one family’s experience, not a standardized lab ranking. See NBC Select’s article.

How to compare backpacks before buying

  • Fit: Look for a pack that sits close to the back, adjusts to the child’s frame and does not hang far below the waist. An age range is only a starting point; check the fit on the child.
  • Capacity: Consider what the child actually needs to carry—such as folders, lunch, water, clothes or required electronics. Avoid choosing a bag simply because it has more room.
  • Comfort and stability: Check for two broad, adjustable shoulder straps and a padded back. A chest or waist strap may help keep a pack in place, but more padding by itself does not mean less pain.
  • Organization and usability: Check bottle pockets, compartments, zipper pulls and any tablet or laptop sleeve the child needs. Consider whether the child can open, pack and carry the bag independently.
  • Durability and care: Compare materials, seams, abrasion and water resistance, and cleaning instructions. Review methods vary: BabyGearLab reports hands-on use and comparison, while Good Housekeeping describes fabric-strength, abrasion, water-resistance and drop testing.
  • Price and availability: Check current prices, sizes, colors and stock with the retailer. The cited guides are dated references, not verification of current offers or inventory.

How the cited reviews tested backpacks

BabyGearLab says it purchased the products in its review, updated August 1, 2025, and had children and parents load and wear them to assess comfort and ease of use. Good Housekeeping’s 2025–2026 guide describes inspecting features, measuring strap padding, recording empty weight and conducting age-specific packing tests. It also reports rubbing fabric samples 15,000 times for abrasion resistance and dropping loaded backpacks from three feet three times, alongside consumer feedback. Those methods and awards belong to the respective publications; they are not independent tests conducted for this article.

Fit and packing guidance from pediatric experts

HealthyChildren.org, the American Academy of Pediatrics’ parenting site, says improperly worn backpacks can cause back, neck and shoulder pain. It also says backpacks have not been shown to cause scoliosis or other long-term spine problems. The page is authored by Saji Azerf, MD, FAAP, and was updated August 27, 2026.

  • Choose a pack proportional to the child’s height, with two broad, adjustable shoulder straps.
  • Use both straps and adjust the pack so it sits close to the body. Its bottom should rest in the curve of the lower back, not more than four inches below the waistline.
  • Put heavier items closest to the back and use compartments to distribute contents.
  • The AAP advises that a backpack should weigh no more than 15% of the child’s body weight. This is the organization’s guidance, not a guarantee of safety or a universally established experimental cutoff.

For the full advice, see HealthyChildren.org’s backpack safety guidance.
