A new phone does not need to consume a four-figure slice of your budget. In 2026, the best value depends on balancing purchase cost, useful storage, software support, battery life, and carrier compatibility. For most people, the Google Pixel 10a is the best cheap phone overall at $499 unlocked; buyers spending less than $200 can choose between the Motorola Moto G (2026) and Samsung Galaxy A17 5G.
iPhone buyers should expect to pay more: the iPhone 17e starts at $599, but includes 256GB of storage and Apple’s A19 processor. Prices here are U.S. unlocked prices; temporary promotions may change what you pay.

Best cheap phone overall: Google Pixel 10a
The Google Pixel 10a is the strongest all-around purchase for most people who want to keep a phone for several years. It starts at $499 for 128GB and is also available with 256GB. Google’s announcement and update policy confirm its price and seven-year support commitment.
Its value is not just the camera. The Pixel 10a has a 6.3-inch 120Hz Actua pOLED display, IP68 water and dust resistance, wireless charging, and a 5,100mAh battery. Google promises seven years of operating-system, security, and Pixel Drop updates from its U.S. Google Store availability date. That support commitment may help you keep the phone longer before replacing it.

The 48MP main camera and 13MP ultrawide camera are suited to family photos, travel, and everyday snapshots. It launched with Android 16, 8GB of RAM, and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. Google’s specifications list the hardware; Tom’s Guide’s current testing also covers the phone.
The important caveat is the processor. The Pixel 10a uses Google’s Tensor G4, not the newer Tensor G5 found in the flagship Pixel 10 line. Tom’s Guide’s review describes the phone’s performance. It is not the best choice for demanding gaming, and the absence of a microSD slot means you should consider 256GB if you regularly record video or download media.
Choose it if: you want a good mix of camera quality, clean software, durability, and long-term support under $500.
Skip it if: maximum gaming speed, expandable storage, or the absolute lowest purchase price matters most.

The iPhone 17e is Apple’s entry-level 2026 model, starting at $599 with 256GB of storage. A 512GB version is also available. Although it costs $100 more than the Pixel 10a, the base iPhone includes twice the Pixel’s base storage. See Apple’s store listing and technical specifications.
Apple fits the phone with an A19 chip, a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, USB-C, IP68 water resistance, and a 48MP Fusion rear camera with a 2x telephoto option. Satellite features are included for two years after activation, subject to regional and carrier restrictions.
This is the practical choice for someone already invested in Apple services, owns an Apple Watch, uses iMessage heavily, or expects to keep using iOS. The A19 also gives it strong performance headroom.

There are clear compromises at this price. The screen runs at 60Hz, while several less expensive Android phones offer 120Hz. The 17e also has one rear-camera system rather than a separate ultrawide camera. Tom’s Guide’s comparison discusses these trade-offs.

Be careful with carrier advertisements describing an iPhone as “free.” The discount may require a qualifying postpaid plan, installment agreement, trade-in, or specific activation. Compare the total cost of the required service over the promotional period—not just the phone credit shown in the advertisement. Apple’s listing notes carrier conditions for advertised connectivity discounts.
Choose it if: you want iOS, Apple ecosystem compatibility, and 256GB of starting storage.
Skip it if: you want a high-refresh-rate display, an ultrawide camera, or the lowest upfront price.
Best phone under $200: Motorola Moto G (2026)
The Motorola Moto G (2026) costs $199.99 unlocked. It is a straightforward budget phone for calls, texts, web browsing, streaming, navigation, and social media. Motorola’s announcement lists its launch features and availability.
You get a large 6.7-inch 120Hz display, Android 16, Gemini access, Circle to Search, and Motorola’s Hello UX features. At 202 grams, it is not unusually heavy for its size, and the high-refresh-rate screen is a meaningful advantage over many older cheap phones.
The cost-saving decision is software support. Motorola’s cheaper G-series phones receive only two years of Android updates, according to Tom’s Guide’s buying guide. That makes the Moto G a sensible low-cost purchase for a basic user, but a weaker long-term value than the Galaxy A17 or Pixel 10a.

A discounted Moto G (2025) may look tempting, but compare its remaining support period with the 2026 model before buying. Saving money upfront is less attractive if the older model will need replacing sooner.
Choose it if: you need a large 120Hz screen for roughly $200 and do not expect five years of use.

Best budget Samsung: Galaxy A17 5G
The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G also costs $199.99 unlocked and offers a more compelling ownership timeline than many inexpensive Motorola phones. Samsung promises six years of operating-system upgrades and security updates. See Samsung’s product listing and support information.
Its 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display is a strong feature at this price, and the 50MP main camera includes optical image stabilization. The phone also provides 5G connectivity and Samsung’s One UI software experience.
The trade-off is performance. The A17 is not as quick or as polished overall as the Pixel 10a, and Tom’s Guide’s testing finds its performance and overall hardware less compelling than some alternatives. Still, for a buyer who prefers Samsung and values years of security updates, it may be the more financially sensible $200 phone.
Check the exact U.S. configuration before purchasing if expandable storage is important. Retail listings can differ by region and model number.

Skip it if: speed and photography are more important than support longevity.
Best for battery life and a large screen: Moto G Power (2026)
The Motorola Moto G Power (2026) costs $299.99 unlocked and is built around endurance. It has a 5,200mAh battery, a 6.8-inch 120Hz LCD, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of expandable storage. Motorola’s announcement and Tom’s Guide’s testing cover the device.
Its MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor is suitable for normal apps and streaming. The camera setup includes a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultrawide, while the front camera is 32MP. Wired charging reaches 30W.
This is a good fit for commuters, travelers, and anyone who spends a lot of time watching video or using navigation. However, the regular Moto G costs $100 less if you do not need the Power model’s larger display or tougher construction. The 2026 version also does not have wireless charging, unlike the 2025 model.
As with the cheaper Moto G, software support is the major financial weakness. A lower purchase price is not automatically a lower cost over the full time you own the phone.

Nothing’s U.S. support documentation identifies it as running Nothing OS 4.1 based on Android 16. Before buying, verify that the exact model supports your carrier’s bands, that the seller offers a U.S. warranty, and that you are not importing a regional version without local service support.
How to choose a cheap phone without making an expensive mistake
- Set a total budget. Include sales tax, a case, screen protection, and any required activation or shipping charge. A $200 phone can cost more once you add these expenses.
- Check whether it is truly unlocked. “Free with a carrier” and “$0 monthly” usually describe a promotion, not an unconditional free phone. Read the requirements for the plan, trade-in, installment term, and early cancellation.
- Price storage realistically. The Pixel 10a has 128GB or 256GB but no microSD slot. The iPhone 17e starts at 256GB. If you keep a large photo library or download shows, paying for more storage at purchase may be cheaper than replacing a full phone later.
- Compare support years. Google promises seven years for the Pixel 10a, Samsung promises six years for the Galaxy A17, and Tom’s Guide reports two years of Android updates for the Moto G line. Security updates matter when using a phone for banking, shopping, and other sensitive tasks.
- Confirm carrier compatibility. Before ordering, check the model number against your carrier’s compatibility tool. This is especially important with imported phones and the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro.
- Do not pay for specifications you will not use. A large 120Hz display and huge battery are worthwhile for some buyers. They are wasted money if you prefer a compact phone and spend most of your time messaging.
What cheap-phone advice is outdated in 2026?
- The Pixel 10a does not use Google’s newest processor; it uses Tensor G4 rather than Tensor G5, as Tom’s Guide’s review notes.
- A new entry-level iPhone is not a roughly $400 purchase in the U.S. The iPhone 17e starts at $599, according to Apple’s store.
- Budget phones are not limited to 60Hz screens. The Pixel 10a, Moto G, and Moto G Power all use 120Hz displays; Tom’s Guide’s buying guide reviews these models.
- Software support varies sharply. A $200 phone with six years of updates can be a better long-term buy than a cheaper model with two years.
- The previous year’s model is not automatically the bargain. A discount can be offset by less remaining support; WIRED’s buying guide recommends accounting for the lost support year.
Our recommendation
Buy the Google Pixel 10a if you can spend around $500 and want one phone to last. Buy the Galaxy A17 5G if your budget is capped at $200 but you care about keeping the phone secure for years. Choose the Moto G (2026) when the lowest upfront price is the deciding factor, and the Moto G Power (2026) when battery life and screen size justify the extra $100.
FAQ
What is the best cheap phone of 2026?
The Google Pixel 10a is the best overall cheap phone for most buyers. It costs $499, has a 120Hz OLED display, strong cameras, IP68 protection, and seven years of updates, according to Google’s update policy.
What is the best phone under $200 in 2026?
The Motorola Moto G (2026) is a good choice when the lowest upfront cost and a large 120Hz screen matter most. The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is a better alternative for buyers who prioritize six years of software support, as stated by Samsung.
Is the iPhone 17e worth $599?
It can be worth it for iPhone users, Apple Watch owners, and buyers who value the A19 chip and 256GB of starting storage. Its 60Hz display and lack of a separate ultrawide camera make Android alternatives stronger on some hardware features; see Tom’s Guide’s comparison.
Should I buy a cheap phone from a carrier promotion?
Only after calculating the full cost. Confirm the required plan, trade-in, installment period, activation terms, and what happens if you cancel service. A phone advertised as free may depend on monthly bill credits and other conditions; check the offer details in Apple’s listing or the carrier’s terms.
The Bottom Line
The best cheap phone for most people is the $499 Google Pixel 10a. It costs more than the cheapest Motorola and Samsung models, but its camera quality, water resistance, wireless charging, and seven years of updates make it a strong long-term value. If you need to stay near $200, choose between the Moto G’s lower price and the Galaxy A17’s much longer support period.
