The cheapest cell phone plan is not always the one with the lowest advertised price. A low monthly equivalent may require a large annual payment, while an unlimited plan may include taxes and hotspot data that cost extra elsewhere.
For most people, the best value in 2026 depends on data use, local network coverage, and whether you need carrier-financed phone upgrades. The recommendations below compare service prices separately from phone payments and explain the restrictions behind each deal.
Prices and plan details were checked August 8, 2026, for U.S. consumer service. Unless stated otherwise, phone payments are not included.
Best cell phone plans for monthly service
| Best for | Plan | Price | Key reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light to moderate data | Mint Mobile 6GB | $15/month equivalent | Low-cost T-Mobile service with unlimited talk and text |
| Cheap unlimited service | Visible | $25/month | Unlimited data and hotspot with taxes and fees included |
| Network flexibility | US Mobile Unlimited Starter | $22.50/month | Choose among three major-network options |
| Heavy data and travel | US Mobile Unlimited Premium | $32.50/month monthly | Unlimited priority data, up to 100GB hotspot and international benefits |
| Annual prepaid value | Cricket 12-Month Unlimited | $25/month equivalent | Unlimited AT&T-network service for $300 paid upfront |
| Frequent phone upgrades | T-Mobile Experience Beyond | Varies at checkout | Annual upgrade eligibility tied to qualifying phone financing |
| Large families seeking phone promotions | Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T postpaid | Varies | Multiline pricing, installment billing and device promotions |
These picks are not interchangeable. Mint and Cricket advertise low monthly equivalents but require advance payment. Visible is billed monthly and includes taxes and fees. US Mobile offers more flexibility, but its data and hotspot allowances can change by network and plan configuration.

Best low-data plan: Mint Mobile 6GB
Mint Mobile’s 6GB plan is a strong fit for someone who normally uses Wi-Fi at home, work and school. Mint lists its regular price as $15 per month equivalent, with unlimited talk and text on T-Mobile’s network.
Mint’s current regular tiers are:
- 6GB: $15 per month equivalent
- 17GB: $20 per month equivalent
- 23GB: $25 per month equivalent
- Unlimited: $30 per month equivalent
These are not ordinary month-to-month charges. Mint sells service in multi-month terms. Its current new-customer promotion prices any plan at a $15 monthly equivalent for the initial term: $45 upfront for three months, $90 for six months or $180 for 12 months. Taxes and fees are extra, and the promotional price ends after that initial term, according to Mint’s plan details.
The plan data amounts also changed in 2026. Older comparisons may still list 5GB, 15GB and 20GB tiers; Mint now lists 6GB, 17GB and 23GB.
Mint’s Unlimited plan includes up to 20GB of hotspot data. Users who exceed 50GB in a monthly cycle may experience reduced speeds for the rest of that cycle in some locations when the network is busy, according to Mint.
Choose Mint if: your normal monthly data use is comfortably below 6GB and you can afford to prepay.
Skip it if: you need a true month-to-month bill, substantial hotspot data or guaranteed high-speed service after heavy usage.
Best simple unlimited plan: Visible
Visible’s standard plan costs $25 per month, including taxes and fees. It includes unlimited talk, text and data on Verizon’s 5G and 4G LTE networks, plus unlimited phone hotspot use. Hotspot speeds and video quality are limited; video is up to 480p SD.
Visible also sells two higher tiers:
- Visible+: $35 per month
- Visible+ Pro: $45 per month
The higher plans add premium-data benefits, faster hotspot service and broader international features. Visible+ Pro includes unlimited premium data on Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network, unlimited premium data on Verizon 5G and 4G LTE, smartwatch service, up to 4K video, Mexico and Canada roaming, two Global Pass days per month and a $15 monthly home-internet discount, according to Visible’s plan details.

Best flexible carrier: US Mobile Unlimited Starter
US Mobile is useful for households that want to choose among major networks without opening a completely new account. Its network options are called Warp, Dark Star and Light Speed. US Mobile’s plan documentation identifies these as its three network choices and allows customers to move a line between networks subject to the plan’s transfer rules.
The current unlimited pricing is:
| Plan | Monthly pricing | Annual pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited Flex | Not available as ordinary monthly billing | $17.50/month equivalent; 10GB high-speed data and 5GB hotspot |
| Unlimited Starter | $22.50/month | $199 for the first year, about $16.60/month |
| Unlimited Premium | $32.50/month | $299 for the first year, about $24.90/month |
The listed US Mobile prices include taxes and fees. Starter generally includes about 70GB of high-speed data and 10GB of hotspot, although Dark Star has different high-speed-data treatment. Premium includes unlimited priority data, up to 100GB of hotspot on one configuration and international benefits. Check US Mobile’s plan page and network-specific documentation during activation because the same plan name does not necessarily provide identical data rules on every network.
US Mobile also offers a Multi-Network add-on. It can add up to two additional network lines to a primary line for $10 per month, or $7.50 per month when purchased annually. Data is shared across the network lines, so this is not a way to obtain three independent unlimited-data buckets, according to US Mobile’s add-on details.
Choose US Mobile if: coverage is uncertain, you want to test different networks or you need more flexibility than a typical prepaid carrier provides.
Watch the fine print: “Unlimited” does not mean unlimited full-speed hotspot. Network transfers, roaming and priority-data rules vary.

Cricket’s 12-Month Unlimited plan costs $300 upfront, which works out to $25 per month. It uses AT&T’s network and is designed for a new single-line account with a compatible customer-owned phone.
The plan can be attractive if you are comfortable locking up $300 in service costs. It is not a normal monthly plan: you pay for the full year in advance. Cricket may temporarily slow data during network congestion, and video streams in SD quality.

There is no hotspot add-on for this annual plan. It also does not work with multiline accounts, device discounts or recurring add-on features, and you cannot freely change plans during the annual term, according to Cricket’s plan terms.
Cricket’s regular monthly unlimited options currently include Select Unlimited at $35 with AutoPay, Smart Unlimited at $45 with AutoPay and Supreme Unlimited at $55 with AutoPay. The first bill may be higher because the AutoPay discount begins with the second service charge on some plans, as Cricket’s plan page explains.

Best heavy-data prepaid plan: US Mobile Unlimited Premium
US Mobile Unlimited Premium is the most capable low-cost prepaid option in this comparison for people who use large amounts of on-device data, need a substantial hotspot allowance or travel internationally.
The monthly price is $32.50. The annual price is $299 upfront, or approximately $24.90 per month. Benefits include unlimited priority data, up to 100GB of hotspot data, up to 20GB of international roaming data, 200 international minutes and 250 texts, depending on the selected network and configuration. See US Mobile’s plans and its allowance documentation.

Best major-carrier value: AT&T Value 2.0
AT&T’s current consumer lineup uses the names Value 2.0, Extra 2.0, Premium 2.0 and Elite 2.0. AT&T’s public page says unlimited plans start at $30 per month per line, but that displayed Value 2.0 price requires eligible AutoPay and paperless billing plus a new bring-your-own-device line. Taxes and fees are extra.
Value 2.0 includes unlimited talk, text and data in and between the United States, Canada and Mexico, 5G access and ActiveArmor mobile security. It includes 5GB of high-speed data and 3GB of hotspot data. After the high-speed allowance, AT&T may temporarily slow data when the network is busy, according to AT&T.
AT&T says customers do not need its most expensive plan to qualify for its best smartphone promotions, although each device offer has separate trade-in, financing and eligibility rules. That makes Value 2.0 worth pricing when you need a new phone, not just cheap service.
Be cautious with older comparisons that refer to AT&T Unlimited Starter, Unlimited Extra or Unlimited Premium as the current new-customer lineup. Those names have been replaced on the current public page by the 2.0 versions.
Best Verizon option for most single lines: Visible
Verizon postpaid can make sense for families or people who want its financing and account-support ecosystem, but Visible is generally the cheaper way for a single line to use Verizon’s network.
Verizon’s current one-line prices are $65 for Unlimited Welcome, $80 for Unlimited Plus and $95 for Unlimited Ultimate, with applicable AutoPay assumptions. Taxes and fees may apply. The prices fall per line as more lines are added: at four or more lines, Welcome is $30 per line, Plus is $45 and Ultimate is $60. These rates are listed on Verizon’s plan page.
Unlimited Plus includes 30GB of mobile hotspot data before reduced speeds. Unlimited Ultimate includes 200GB of premium hotspot data, followed by unlimited hotspot at reduced speeds, according to Verizon.
For comparison, Visible’s standard $25 plan includes taxes and fees and unlimited hotspot use, although at the plan’s lower hotspot speed and with SD video. The right choice depends on whether you value premium data, higher hotspot performance, multiline discounts or device promotions more than the lower fixed bill.
Verizon retired Unlimited Ultimate 1.0 on May 7, 2026. Current and legacy versions should not be treated as identical when comparing benefits, prices or upgrade rules, according to Verizon’s plan information.

Best for frequent phone upgrades: T-Mobile Experience Beyond
T-Mobile’s current consumer plans use the Experience More and Experience Beyond names rather than the older Go5G Plus and Go5G Next terminology. T-Mobile says both new Experience plans include unlimited premium data. Experience More provides upgrade eligibility every two years, while Experience Beyond provides annual-upgrade eligibility.
The annual upgrade benefit is not simply a free-phone promise. T-Mobile requires you to:
- Buy a qualifying phone through a 24-month Equipment Installment Plan.
- Keep the line active on Experience Beyond for at least six months.
- Pay off half of the device balance.
- Trade in the phone in good working condition.
T-Mobile then covers the remaining half of the qualifying device balance when you upgrade under the applicable program. Experience More and Experience Beyond also include Netflix Standard with ads and Apple TV+; Experience Beyond adds Hulu with ads. See T-Mobile’s plan terms.
The plan price should be confirmed at checkout because it varies with the number of lines, AutoPay, promotions and other account details. Paying off a device early can also end monthly bill credits tied to a promotion.
Choose Experience Beyond if: you regularly buy flagship phones and will follow the financing, trade-in and service requirements.
Choose a cheaper prepaid plan if: you keep phones for several years or buy unlocked devices. Paying for upgrade benefits you do not use is a recurring expense, not a savings strategy.
How to choose a plan without overpaying
- Check your actual data use. Look in your current carrier app or phone settings for the last three months. If you usually use 4GB, paying for unlimited data may not improve your experience.
- Test coverage at important locations. Check service at home, work, school and along your regular travel route. National coverage maps cannot guarantee indoor coverage or usable speeds in a congested neighborhood.
- Separate service from the phone payment. Calculate the plan, device installment, insurance, protection plan, activation charge and any remaining balance on your old phone.
- Compare the real bill. Visible and the listed US Mobile plans include taxes and fees. Mint, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile prices cited here generally do not.
- Inspect hotspot rules. Unlimited phone data rarely means unlimited full-speed hotspot. Mint includes up to 20GB on Unlimited; US Mobile limits hotspot by plan; AT&T Value 2.0 includes 3GB.
- Price the renewal. Mint’s $15 promotion applies only to the initial term. Cricket’s $25 figure requires a $300 annual payment. AutoPay discounts and carrier bill credits can also change the future cost.
- Confirm phone compatibility. Check whether your phone is unlocked, supports the carrier’s bands and can activate by eSIM if needed. A low plan price is irrelevant if the device cannot be used.
- For families, total every line. A one-line prepaid price can look cheaper, while postpaid service may become more competitive with four or more lines and device promotions.
Claims about cell phone plans that are outdated
- Mint still has 5GB, 15GB and 20GB tiers. The current tiers are 6GB, 17GB and 23GB, plus Unlimited, according to Mint.
- Visible’s $25 price excludes taxes and fees. Taxes and fees are included in the standard $25 plan, according to Visible.
- Every unlimited plan provides unlimited high-speed data. Mint, US Mobile, Cricket and AT&T can limit or slow service under their stated data and congestion policies.
- Cricket’s $25 plan is monthly billing. It requires $300 upfront for 12 months, according to Cricket.
- US Mobile’s limits are the same on every network. High-speed data, hotspot and priority rules differ between network options, as US Mobile documents.
- T-Mobile’s current top plan is Go5G Next. Current public consumer materials use Experience More and Experience Beyond, according to T-Mobile.
- A free phone has no conditions. Major-carrier offers commonly require a qualifying plan, installment financing, trade-in, port-in, continued service and monthly bill credits. T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond terms specify qualifying installment financing and at least six months of service.
FAQ
What is the cheapest good cell phone plan in 2026?
Mint Mobile’s 6GB plan has a regular advertised price of $15 per month equivalent, making it a strong fit for light data users. The service is prepaid in multi-month terms, taxes and fees are extra, and the current $15 promotion applies only to the initial term. Mint lists its terms. Visible costs $25 per month with taxes and fees included if you need unlimited data.
Which $25 cell phone plan is the best?
Visible is the more flexible $25 option because it is billed monthly, includes taxes and fees, and provides unlimited data and hotspot use on Verizon’s network. Cricket also works out to $25 per month, but its 12-Month Unlimited plan requires $300 upfront, is limited to a new single-line account and does not include hotspot service.
Is prepaid service cheaper than Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile?
For one line, prepaid services such as Visible, Mint and US Mobile are usually cheaper because they generally offer fewer stores, account services and device-promotion benefits. Postpaid carriers can become more competitive for families, customers who need premium data or people who regularly use carrier phone-financing promotions.
What should I check before changing cell phone plans?
Check coverage where you actually use your phone, recent data consumption, hotspot limits, taxes and fees, renewal pricing, phone compatibility and any device-financing balance. Also confirm whether the advertised price requires annual prepayment, AutoPay, paperless billing, a new line or a bring-your-own-device phone.
The Bottom Line
For light data use, Mint Mobile’s 6GB plan offers a low practical price, provided you can prepay and accept extra taxes and fees. Visible is the simplest choice for one line needing unlimited service and a predictable $25 bill. US Mobile is better when network flexibility, hotspot data or international service matters. Cricket’s annual plan is compelling for AT&T coverage if you can pay $300 upfront and do not need hotspot service.
Major-carrier postpaid plans remain worth considering for large families, premium-network benefits and phone promotions. But calculate the complete cost—including device payments and lost bill credits—before treating a “free phone” or multiline discount as a bargain.
