AWS Cuts Hundreds of Jobs in Sales and Physical Stores Tech Teams

The April 2024 AWS cuts affected sales training and operations, along with parts of the physical stores identity and checkout teams.

AWS announced the job cuts on April 3, 2024: several hundred roles in its Sales, Marketing, and Global Services organization, plus a few hundred in Physical Stores Technology. The reductions affected training and sales operations, as well as parts of the identity and checkout teams. They are a historical 2024 event, not a new October 2026 announcement.

How many AWS jobs were cut?

Contemporary reports gave approximate figures rather than a precise total: several hundred roles in AWS Sales, Marketing, and Global Services, and a few hundred in Physical Stores Technology. The categories were reported separately, so the figures should not be treated as an exact combined headcount. GeekWire, CRN, and The Associated Press reported the cuts on April 3, 2024.

Which AWS teams were affected?

Sales, Marketing, and Global Services

The sales-side reductions were concentrated in training and certification and in sales operations. AWS said it was shifting training toward self-service digital offerings and instructor-led programs delivered through AWS Training Partners. It also cited overlap in some program-management and sales-operations roles. AWS spokesperson’s explanation, quoted by CRN, was: “Within our training and certification organization, we have evolved our strategy to prioritize investing in self-serve digital training and delivering instructor-led training through AWS Training Partners.”

Physical Stores Technology

A few hundred roles were affected in the Physical Stores Technology organization, including parts of its identity and checkout teams. The changes accompanied a broader shift in how some applications were used in Amazon’s own stores and in third-party stores. At the time, coverage also linked the announcement to Amazon moving away from Just Walk Out in larger Amazon Fresh grocery stores. That did not mean the technology was being abandoned everywhere: reporting described expansion of identity and checkout technology in smaller Amazon-owned stores and third-party locations. GeekWire and The Associated Press covered the store-technology context.

Why did AWS make the cuts?

The stated explanations differed by organization. For training and certification, AWS described a move toward self-service digital learning and partner-delivered instruction. For sales operations and program management, it cited role overlap. In Physical Stores Technology, the reductions were part of a strategic change in the applications used in some Amazon and third-party stores. The cited reports do not establish that the 2024 cuts were caused by artificial intelligence.

AWS senior vice president Matt Garman acknowledged the effect on employees in a statement quoted by GeekWire: “We do not take these decisions lightly, and I know change can be difficult.”

What support was reported for affected employees?

For U.S. employees affected by this 2024 event, GeekWire reported at least 60 days of pay and benefits, outplacement job-search support, transitional health benefits, and eligibility for severance payments. These were reported terms for this round of cuts, not a general Amazon policy or a guarantee about later layoffs. GeekWire’s report also said the reductions would occur in regions around the world and could disproportionately affect Seattle because of AWS’s concentration of roles there.

How does the 2024 report relate to Amazon’s later workforce cuts?

Amazon announced separate, company-wide reductions after the AWS report. In an October 28, 2025 post, Amazon senior vice president Beth Galetti said the company expected an overall reduction of approximately 14,000 corporate roles; she also said most impacted employees would have 90 days to seek another internal role. In January 2026, Galetti announced a further reduction affecting approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon. These announcements concern Amazon-wide workforce changes, not revisions to the April 2024 AWS figures. Amazon’s October 2025 announcement and its January 2026 update describe those later events.
