Yes, Best Buy currently offers a U.S. mail-in electronics-recycling service—but it is not a new 2026 program. Best Buy announced the service nationwide on April 5, 2023. Today, customers can buy a small or medium recycling box, pack it with eligible electronics, and send it through UPS.
The small box is currently listed at $22.99 and the medium at $29.99. Those prices include the box, tape, instructions and a prepaid UPS label, but a UPS home-pickup charge may apply. The service is most useful when convenience matters more than finding the cheapest disposal option.

How Best Buy’s mail-in recycling service works
- Order a recycling box from Best Buy’s mail-in service page.
- Check the instructions to make sure every item is accepted.
- Pack the electronics without exceeding the box’s weight limit.
- Seal and label the box using the included tape and prepaid UPS label.
- Drop it at UPS or arrange a UPS pickup. Best Buy says an additional pickup fee may apply.
The box cannot be returned to a Best Buy store, and the purchased box is non-returnable. Electronic Recyclers International, Best Buy’s recycling partner, receives and processes the contents.

At the maximum weight, the small box costs about $3.83 per pound, while the medium costs about $2 per pound. Those are simple calculations based on Best Buy’s listed prices and limits—not Best Buy’s own pricing claims. The medium box is the better value if you have enough eligible electronics to fill it safely.

What can go in the box?
Best Buy’s launch announcement gave examples including tablets, cords, keyboards and other small household gadgets. The current mail-in page refers to “accepted electronics” and says customers should follow the instructions supplied with the box.
Do not assume that every item accepted through Best Buy’s broader in-store recycling program is eligible for mail-in recycling. In-store categories can include phones, laptops, tablets, computer accessories, cameras, audio equipment and GPS devices, but mail shipments have separate packaging and carrier restrictions. Check the current mail-in instructions for each item before packing it.

Do not place loose batteries, liquids or chemicals in the box. The page specifically excludes loose batteries, but it does not support a blanket assumption about every device containing a built-in rechargeable battery. For an integrated lithium-ion battery, follow the current box instructions and shipping restrictions. Do not remove an internal battery unless the manufacturer permits it or a qualified technician can do so safely.
Wipe your data before shipping
Best Buy says customers are responsible for wiping or removing their own data before sending devices. It also says ERI may destroy data through processes such as erasing, degaussing, shredding, impairment or overwriting. That downstream process is not a substitute for preparing the device yourself.

- Back up files you want to keep.
- Sign out of Apple, Google, Microsoft and other accounts.
- Remove SIM cards and memory cards.
- Perform a factory reset where appropriate.
- Use a secure-erase process for computers and storage drives.
- Consider removing a removable hard drive containing especially sensitive information if you can do so safely.
Best Buy’s recycling FAQ says customers can wipe data themselves and may consult Geek Squad about options such as hard-drive removal for some computers. Do not mail a device containing irreplaceable or highly sensitive information unless you have independently verified that it has been securely wiped.

Mailing versus taking electronics to a Best Buy store
If you can transport the items, store drop-off may be cheaper because qualifying in-store recycling is often free. Best Buy says its U.S. stores, including stores in Puerto Rico, offer electronics recycling, although Outlet stores generally do not and state-specific rules apply.
Best Buy’s published pages currently do not present a single consistent store quantity limit. Its main recycling page says up to three items per household per day, while its FAQ describes up to 10 qualified items, including limits such as up to five laptops, two TVs or monitors and three other qualified items. Connecticut and Pennsylvania stores have additional restrictions on TVs and monitors.
Because those pages conflict, check the current rules for the specific store and state before making a trip. Store acceptance, fees, categories and quantity limits can vary.

Check trade-in value before recycling
A working phone, laptop, tablet, game console or camera may be worth more as a trade-in than as scrap. Best Buy’s separate Trade-In program can provide a Best Buy gift card, purchase credit or installment-billing credit for eligible products.

Trade-in value depends on the model, condition, accessories and current demand. Online trade-ins use a separate shipping process, and Best Buy generally requires the item to arrive within 14 days of the estimate. Do not combine trade-in items with recycling items in one shipment: Best Buy says they go to different receiving locations, and a trade-in sent to the recycling partner may be unrecoverable and will not earn trade-in value.
If a device still works, selling or donating it may also preserve more value than recycling, although you should weigh privacy, safety, shipping and buyer-risk concerns.

The mail-in boxes are for small electronics—not televisions, refrigerators, washers or other large appliances. Best Buy says large appliances are not accepted through ordinary store recycling.
Possible alternatives include:
- Delivery-related haul-away: Best Buy lists a $49.99 fee for hauling away an eligible major appliance when a replacement appliance is delivered.
- Standalone haul-away: Best Buy lists $199.99 for up to two large products, including TVs, plus unlimited select smaller products.
- Local or state programs: Municipal and state collection events may be free and may accept TVs, batteries, monitors or hazardous materials that the mail-in service excludes.

When the mail-in box makes financial sense
Choose mail-in recycling when you have multiple small, eligible electronics, cannot conveniently reach a store, and consider the fee worthwhile for the convenience. Weigh the packed contents before sealing; dense electronics can push the small box over its six-pound limit.
It is usually a poor fit when you have only one lightweight item, a free local program is available, the device may have trade-in value, or you are dealing with a TV, appliance, battery, liquid, chemical or other prohibited material.
Also remember that Best Buy does not promise that every mailed item will be refurbished or reused. Recyclers determine whether items are repaired, repurposed or recycled.

Best Buy currently lets U.S. customers mail in certain small electronics, but the program was launched in 2023, not 2026, and it is not free. The service costs $22.99 for a small box or $29.99 for a medium box, with possible extra charges for UPS pickup.
It is a convenience option for several low-value devices when store transportation is difficult. Before paying, compare the cost with store drop-off and local recycling, check whether a working device qualifies for trade-in, and protect your data yourself.
