The Patagonia Black Hole Pack 25L has the clearest work-and-travel features, the REI Co-op Trail 25 is the most hiking-focused option here, and the Osprey Sportlite 25 is a lighter day-hiking pack with a stated load range. Compare fit, access, and packed dimensions—not capacity alone—before you buy.

These figures and features come from current manufacturer and retailer product listings; they are not comparative lab or comfort tests. Choose based on the load and activity you expect, then check whether the pack’s fit and access suit you.
For commuting and travel: Patagonia Black Hole Pack 25L
Patagonia lists the Black Hole Pack as a 25-liter daypack measuring 18.8 × 11 × 5.9 inches and weighing 640 g (1 lb 6.6 oz). Its product description calls it a daypack for daily essentials. The body, lining, and webbing are recycled polyester with a recycled TPU-film laminate, according to Patagonia’s product page.
For workdays or travel, REI’s listing identifies a padded sleeve for most 15-inch laptops, a front stash pocket, stretch-woven bottle pockets, an airmesh back panel, and a pass-through for stacking the pack on rolling luggage. These are practical features for a commute or airport transfer; the page does not establish that the pack is the most comfortable choice for a loaded hike. See REI’s listing for the feature details.

Carry-on is not the same as personal item
REI says the pack meets the carry-on restrictions of most airlines under a 45-linear-inch criterion, while advising customers to confirm with their airline because policies can change. That is not a guarantee for every carrier, fare, or flight, and it does not establish that the pack qualifies as a personal item. Check the carrier’s current size rules and compare them with the pack’s listed dimensions before traveling.
For structured day hikes: REI Co-op Trail 25
The Trail 25 is the most hiking-oriented choice of these three based on its listed features. REI specifies an internal frame and HDPE framesheet, a hipbelt, top and panel access, four exterior pockets in addition to the main compartment, reservoir compatibility, and an included raincover. The product page also lists torso and hip-fit ranges, so use those measurements to assess fit rather than assuming that any 25-liter pack will suit your body.

REI lists the weight as 1 lb 13 oz for sizes XS–XL and 1 lb 14 oz for XXL–4XL. Check the Trail 25 listing for the fit ranges and specifications for the size you are considering. Reservoir compatibility means a reservoir can be used; confirm whether your preferred reservoir is included before purchase.
For lighter day hikes: Osprey Sportlite 25
Osprey describes the Sportlite 25 as a panel-loading daypack for day hikes and excursions. Its stated load range is 5–25 lb, and its listed weight is 2.25 lb (1.02 kg). The harness is adjustable, the close-to-body backpanel uses Osprey’s AirScape design, and the pack has a padded hipbelt with pockets, sternum strap, front shove-it pocket, and hydration sleeve. The reservoir is sold separately.

Osprey lists recycled 210D nylon for the main and accent fabrics and says the DWR treatment is made without PFAS. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent evidence of durability, weatherproofing, or comfort. Review the Sportlite 25 product page for the current product details.
How to choose before you buy
- Start with your usual load. Include the items you will actually carry—such as a laptop and work essentials, or water, layers, and hiking gear. Osprey states a 5–25 lb load range for the Sportlite 25; the cited listings do not provide comparable load ranges for the other two.
- Check fit, not just volume. For hiking, compare your torso and hip measurements with the Trail 25’s listed fit ranges and try the pack with a representative load if possible. A 25-liter capacity does not determine how a pack will sit on your body.
- Match access and organization to the task. The Patagonia listing details laptop and luggage features useful for work and travel. The Trail 25 offers top and panel access plus multiple exterior pockets. Osprey lists panel loading and a front shove-it pocket.
- Plan for water and weather. The Trail 25 listing specifies an included raincover and reservoir compatibility. Osprey specifies a hydration sleeve but sells the reservoir separately. The cited Patagonia listing details bottle pockets; it does not establish reservoir compatibility. A water-repellent treatment or laminate is not the same as a guarantee that the pack is waterproof.
- Verify travel dimensions with the carrier. Patagonia’s listed dimensions are 18.8 × 11 × 5.9 inches. Check the airline’s current rules and whether they apply to carry-on baggage or personal items; do not rely on a general allowance as a universal rule.
What the listings do—and do not—tell you
Product pages can establish listed dimensions, weight, materials, and included features, but they do not prove which pack will feel best on a specific person or hold up longest under repeated use. No hands-on comparison or independent durability test is established for these models here. If comfort is decisive, try the pack with your expected load and adjust the harness and hipbelt before choosing.
